Go for broke, or position for next year? (1 Viewer)

Without giving details of my current dilemma, in your dynasty leagues do you always go for broke with little regard to next year, or try to balance it out more?

In my situation, a very slight downgrade at my RB #1 (my #1 is expensive, his not so much) would put me in a much, much better position to re-sign my big dogs next year. I have a team that should compete for the championship as is, and I still will even if I make the trade.

But I struggle with the notion that you try to win while you can and let the bottom-rung teams worry about next year, or that you always keep an eye on a year or two down the road.

Your strategies?

In Dynastys and larger keeper leagues (more players to keep) Its a tough balancing act. However, you are in it to win are you not?

I am in a league where too many people would rather wait until next year then make the deal to put them over the top this year.

In your case if you can still win it this year by making this deal AND it helps you next year then do it. If you dont think you can win this year by making the deal then dont do it.

In it to win it!

i have a similar situation/dilemma. i think it depends on the league. in my keeper league one team has won 2 years in a row, and looks like he's a strong contender again this year. in the offseason, it looked like i had a team that could def make the playoffs, but prob not win it. as someone who didn't (and still doesn't) have any of the "big 3" RBs, i liquidated everything. i figured, with him rocking LT2 every week, my combo of 2-3 RBs MIGHT outproduce his big guy. so, my strategy this year was to draft a team that would remain competitive, basically ALL upside guys, in the hopes that NEXT year, i'll have some killer studs. for example, i sold Warrick Dunn and Frank Gore (regrettably... i didn't see SF putting up many pts... guess i was wrong) and kept Kevin Jones (who i saw with a ton of upside, and sort-of still do) and drafted guys like Maroney and Norwood... guys that i could see exploding on the scene to become top 5ish type guys.

basically, this is a long answer meant to say take a look at the best team in your league and forecast what it'll take to eventually overtake them. after all, only 2 teams usually finish in the money, and only 1 really makes a score. you want to be that 1 team for as long as possible. position yourself in such a way that gets you there as efficiently as possible, while still giving yourself the chance to compete this year and possibly get real lucky in the playoffs. what you DON'T want is to sell out for this year and then catch bad luck in Rd 1 of the playoffs and then you've got nothing to show for this year, and you're behind the 8 ball for next yr.
