Going golfing in Tampa -any recommendations? (1 Viewer)

Going next week for 3 days with two friends - plan on golfing and seeing the sights of Tampa...

Can anyone recommend golf courses, restaurants etc?

This is the first time for all three of us

Thanks!

First time in Tampa or first time golfing? Guessing just Tampa.

Golfing: Streamsong just opened up. Very highly rated courses, but pricey. On the cheap I understand "The Claw" at USF is a really nice course. Go on Golf Now and you can get good prices and ratings of all the local course.

Establishments: Mons Venus, 2001. Please don't come to Tampa and miss Mons. I think it's why they keep hosting Superbowl's here.

Where are you staying? There are a million courses, but spread out.

Is money an issue? You are now in peak season.

Streamsong would be at the top of the list, if you can drive 45-60 min and can pay for it.

Innisbrook is next. Copperhead is the PGA course there, but all 4 of them are nice.

First time staying in Tampa and golfing in Tampa - all three of us are average golfers...

Looking to play one a top course one day and then decent ones the next days

Staying at the Best Western near the airport

Innisbrook is not far from there and public, but pricey. They've had a rough few years though, so may be more desperate than normal.

TPC Tampa Bay is 20 min or so...also pricey but it hosts a Senior event.

Some lesser known good public tracks I like: Fox Hollow, The Eagles, Wentworth, Plantation Palms, Westchase is ok.

MacDill is not a great track, but a cool experience (it's on the military base on an island).

You're close to Rocky Point...which is playable.

World woods, especially Pine Barrens
It's not in the shape it used to be, but still a great experience. Although it's an hour from him.

If you are willing to drive up there, go to Southern Hills instead...which is private but playable if you tell them you are considering being a member. Unreal condition.

Few tips on golf first...

1. It's winter and the snow birds are down in full force, the price of all the golf courses tend to go up, sure you know this already. Because of that I think you might enjoy a course that isn't TPC.

2. Pebble Creek in Wesley Chapel might be the right move for you and here is why. You have a lot of challenges the first time you play including some narrow fairways and also dog legs wrapping around trees. I would say if you are going with some buddies that this would be the prefect course. You can probably play a round for like $30 and under, you might need a coupon or something but it shouldn't cost a lot. Irish theme pub/bar on the premise, food and drinks are pretty reasonable for a golf course, the girls riding around in carts are pretty cute.

3. Fox Hollow is a little drive over to New Port Richey but outstanding service getting the clubs out of your car, cart girls everywhere with drinks, nice pro shop, 5 different boxes to tee up from so all levels are welcome. Great practice/warm up area. Bunkers and water hazards will punish the meek though.

Other entertainment…There is a Hard Rock casino that has poker and a lot of games. Nothing like Vegas but if you need to scratch an itch there you go. I believe the best place to kick it still is Ybor City but that said the last 2 trips to Tampa for me I noticed a lot less folks out there than there you used to be. SO either money and economy has impacted things which I believe or the folks who live there in Tampa for whatever reason do not appreciate the history of Ybor. It has awesome microbreweries like the YBOR CITY BREWING COMPANY which feature such beers as One Night Stand and Ole Elephant Foot, the beers are off the chain here and if you stumble into Ybor you need to go directly here.

The strip clubs IIRC allow full nudity and drinks, they do down here in Miami/Ft Lauderdale and since Joe Redner became famous owning Mons Venus and 2001, pretty sure it's completely nude and alcohol. There are many strip clubs in Tampa, Mons/2001 are across the street from each other, both are old and have been there a long time but super convenient.

You want the best Cuban food in Florida? Go to La Teresita on Coumbus near the stadium but go around the back and sit in the cafe behind the main fancy restaurant. Order the pork special they have daily over a bed of black beans and rice, some plantains, deliciousness.

The Columbia in Ybor City also has outstanding food.

Enjoyed Saddlebrook...but its not close to the airport at all.

Played before a conference there and remember it being a long drive out there and a pretty pricey cab ride.

Also, I've never been there, but Cigar City Brewing is there. Been drinking their stuff for years and they are fantastic brewers.

Yea..it's a solid 45 min. No value there unless you are staying for the weekend.

The Claw? I heard that's a hard course.
Played there often when I was a USF student. That course is very hard. It was never in great condition, though that was a long time ago. But if you love a 7,000 yard course that is narrow as a bowling alley with many opportunities to play pine tree pinball when you miss the fairway, fast greens with a pin placement on the crown, water all over the place and tall grass in the rough, you'll love it. Take you're regular score and add at least 10 if you are good, 20 if you have accuracy issues. But if you are up for a good challenge that will only get harder as you get your drink on, it's the place for you. And if you have never seen an alligator on a golf course, this place may be your best bet. If it has rained recently, stay away because the drainage there sucks.
