Going on an Alaskan Cruise - Ever Been? (1 Viewer)

.

Never been on a cruise, never wanted to. But it seems like the best way to see Alaska.

I don't know, man. My FIL and 5 other fellas went on a week long fishing trip back in May. They got to see quite a bit of cool stuff while coming home with tons of delicious halibut, rockfish, etc. Just got back from visiting with them and my FIL cooked up some of the halibut he brought home....holy smokes was that incredible. I love halibut, but it's super expensive and he probably cooked up $150 worth of it that night. So good.

But yeah, an Alaskan cruise is a great way to see Alaska but keep in mind that quite a bit of your cruise is out on open water where you won't see anything but water.
As a guys trip, that sounds cool but with just me and the wife, probably better as a cruise. But the boring open water is a big reason why we never went on a cruise, besides the huge crowds. I'd look for something very small.
The most open water that I saw was first day between Seward and Glacier Bay. But otherwise mostly along the coast. Besides the day in Glacier Bay National Park, you are really just on the boat at night anyway. Sail during the night and wake up in Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, etc. I hate cruising something like the Caribbean, but loved cruise in Alaska.

I just got a brochure from Viking and they seem to imply that none of those things happen on their cruises.
Anyone know if that's the case?

Don't they have a much smaller capacity and advertise as a higher end cruise for people who want a little more out of their experience? They make sure to hammer the "No Casino" angle on their adverts.
