Immediate reaction was Wilder - his highs are higher than Hackmans IMO but after giving it some thought it's really close between the two.  Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles are just too good to ignore.  I'll give the nod to Wilder but Hackman has the deeper catalog and was probably a better actor (won 2 Oscars). Nice pole Otis!

in comparison - Wilder is a hack, man

Popeye Doyle >>>>> Willy Wonka

Love hackman. So many amazing roles like Doyle or in The Conversation. But I'm watching willy Wonka right now with my daughter... One of my favorite performances ever- the undercurrent of amoral misanthropy is amazing. So I'll always go with Wilder.

Hackman's turn in "The Birdcage" is as underrated and glossed over as the flick is. brilliance all around.

he's the tops here in my book.

Why? I think it's very close. Hackman was in some awesome movies and was a find dramatic actor, but he's not funny. Wilder is a comic genius.
by the same token ... could Wilder pull off Doyle?

not staking the entire career on one role, but, you get my drift, no?

Surprised at the lack of respect for Wilder. The two aren't really comparable but Wilder is just as much a legend as Hackman. Wilder worked far less often hung it up in his mid 50's basically. Hackman went into his 70's doing 3-4 projects a year. Hackman played himself in almost every movie. Wilder played the opposite of himself.

How is this even a question, Hackman was the white SLJ.  Plus he's a great actor.  Tons of great films + great performances > a one trick pony funnyman.

Very close for me. Wilder has the better catalog, but he wasn't always the guy that made those great. Hackman delivered the goods when the role was there. Plus f'in poseidon adventure man!

I dig Hackman...but he always seemed to be playing himself in films.
I was watching Crimson Tide the other night and had this same thought. Hackman was incredibly prolific but always plays basically the same character. His Wild Bill and his Lex Luther and his etc etc are the same guy.
