Good movies with a largely unknown cast at time of release (1 Viewer)

If--and this is a very big "if"--you subtract Brando from "Godfather", the biggest screen credit of anyone in the cast is Duvall's Frank Burns in "MASH".

The Outsiders.

Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Patrick Swayze, and Ralph Macchio were pretty much unknown.

Just the second movie for C. Thomas Howell, but his first one was E.T., so it wasn't like he was unknown.

Diane Lane wasn't yet famous.

Matt Dillon was starting to blow up.

Also had a couple uncredited extras who went to some fame: Flea and Cam Neely.

I knew I forgot an obvious one and it was irking me. Stay gold, fellas.

Reservoir Dogs is the first movie that came to mind for me. QT has a knack for identifying talent.

That's awesome.

Best I can do.

Rushmore:

Luke Wilson, Jason Schwartzman, Olivia Williams, and Sara Tanaka, simply because she went on to be brilliant.

Also, one could argue that it was the start of Bill Murray's re-genesis in the popular eye, though he certainly was known.

Several of the movies mentioned here, like Breakfast Club, Dazed and All the Right Moves and Outsiders, were intended as star vehicles, these movies were intended to roll out young stars as just that, stars, and because one day they would be stars.

I think it's interesting in those films the leads who did not become stars or fizzed out while the supporting cast rose (or other leads did succeed). Jeremy London, C. Thomas Howell, Emilio Estevez, they did not become Tom Cruise, Diane Lane or Matthew McConaughey.

impressive list. But many, if not most of those dudes were already known, right?
I didn't know most of them when I watched it over and over early on. Came out what.. 15 years ago?

Then I watched it a few nights ago and was blown away.. like every dude with a line is a star now.

eta - I wouldn't be surprised (without doing the research myself) if this list is missing several well known faces.
