weeks. But it is AWESOME. can forward all calls to your phone # (for

life), and they will ring through. Plus, all voicemails are transcribed and

emailed/texted to you as well. [so my old # didn't die. it works as it

always did) but it just uses my standard voicemail. A cool thing was

google voice let me choose between thousands of phone numbers to find the

one I wanted. My new # is 404-OK-G-0-DUI

This goes from being "really cool" to "invaluable" if Google - as they are suggesting - begins to support porting numbers in to the app. You could port your current number that friends, family, and contacts have and then never need a new number. Each time you changed carriers or devices, you could just change the forwarding in the GT account and no one would be the wiser.

This is what I think is one of the big advantages. If you move, or change Wireless carriers and don't port your number over People just need to know your Google Voice number and you never have to give them a different number ever again.

Two nights ago there was as server issue.

You can pick your own. I forgot how, but that's what I did. Then, I didn't like what I picked so I've never used it. And didn't someone say you can change your number?

Change you number is the first option under settings. Type in numbers or words to find one you like.

I think it's automatic. There doesn't seem to be a setting for it. If the phone type under the "phone" tab is mobile, I think it'll do it without having to set it up. I did not express myself well. I was presented with the option to browse available numbers. Wanted to pick something that would stick easily to the memory cells. There were a few with two '0's in the last four, but not consecutively. I actually like the last four of 0369.

Yes you can do that. I was wanting two google numbers to ring my phone. Google will only let your phone be tied to one gmail account at a time.So let's say you lived in Wyoming and had a winter home in Florida; you could have two gmail accounts and switch over your phone to the gmail account with the area code depending where you were so you would have a local number. You can't switch google numbers on a single gmail account without paying $10 each time. And you can't have two google numbers ring a single phone at any given time.If you moved around a lot like I do I guess you could keep getting a new gmail account each time but that would be a pain too.

Haven't used mine much at all. Two of the main positives for me were:1. Use your Google number to ring all of your phones at once (home, office, cell) or set up a schedule for which will ring when (ring cell anytime, office from 8-5, home until 10pm, etc)2. All voice mails left for you can be transcribed and sent to you as a text and/or email.Also could get an easier to remember number originally, not sure now.Went closest I could to Mitch Hedberg's... 222-0220

Right, the number isn't tied to a carrier for those kinds of discounts.However, if you have a "friends and family" billing discount, where all your calls to a certain 4 or 5 numbers are free, if you make that number your GV number and use GV to place the calls, all your calls would theoretically be free.

Hmmm, that makes it a little less attractive. Pretty much all of my family and a lot of my friends are on Verizon Wireless. All those calls would go from being free to counting against our minutes.

Yes. Location independence, carrier independence. If you're home answer it home (and use unlimited minutes), if you're out answer your cell. All voicemail gets transcribed (about as poorly as SpinVox which i used for many years before this) and texted/emailed along with audio. And you can auto-forward different numbers at different times. What's not to love?

Also - I'm switching carriers and moving to the EVO in December. At that time will i have Sprint just use my new GVoice number as my cell number?

Just get a new number on Sprint and have GV forward there.

I enjoy it. I like having a number that rings both my home and cell phone, although my wife isn't too fond of it when it rings both and I'm at work. My biggest complaint is that the voicemail takes a long time to answer, but people seem to wait for it.

I was looking at signing up and it gave me the option of getting a new number (really dont want to explain to the wife why i need a google number) or i could port my regular number from my carrier to GV. I just do not want to lose my free verizon to verizon calls. Are the text messages pretty much instant?
