I know there is a whole thread dedicated to Gore, but thought this clip from the new head coach important enough to warrant its own thread. The question is, will fewer touches keep him healthier and fresher, and thus, not negatively effect his numbers. What say you?

Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan is planning to keep RB Frank Gore fresh throughout the 2007 season. Nolan said he hopes Gore will touch the ball fewer than his 312 carries in 2006. "It would be nice to get somebody in there who could take some of the load. There's a lot of wear and tear on a running back who runs like he does. He doesn't shy away from too much and he's not a huge guy, although he's stocky and sturdy. He takes a lot of punishment."

I was, I'll own up. But I have used my metro card to go from the train to the tram. On the other hand, he was playing a new position, so it may be too early to throw the first shovelful on his casket. He may still be a servicable RB some day, but not while Gore is healthy and on the same team. As for who the backup is, I'd guess Hicks, but subject to change. Hey sometimes the sleepers work out (Brandon Marshall maybe) and sometimes they don't. Given I got both of them in the 4th round in a 16 team dynasty, I'll take a 50% hit ratio on sleeper picks.

I'm not calling out MRob supporters. I actually think given some more time he might emerge. But if Hicks is the undisputed backup, that's not really good news.If MRob would lock himself in as the backup, he'd have some nice value, and a solid cuff for the oft-injured Gore.I just avoid watching SF like the plague. It causes my eyes to bleed.

This is the biggest non-event I've seen here in a while. But, please, by all means, get jurb or someone else in here to fire up the Michael Robinson bandwagon again.

Tomlinson and LJ are in a different tier than Gore. Also you have to consider Gore's injury history, plus San Fran is a couple of years away from playoff contention. So why burn him out? Of course then again they could be looking to get him a mere 300 carries, which is still less than last year. I look at this as mostly coachspeak anyway.

I just hope our new OC can run Norv's offense. Gore's value goes WAY down if he isn't a focal point in the short passing game. With Hicks and Robinson on the roster, I think coach Nolan will find it very tough to get Gore into the 350 carry range where he would need to be if his reception stats trended downward.

With a guy like Vernon Davis on the roster, any little change in the offensive philsophy could have a dramatic effect on Gore's overall numbers. This is one guy you want to watch closely during the preseason IMO.

I don't think this is a non-issue at all.From a purely fantasy stand point, this could be significant. This reminds me of when Barber first starting taking carries away from J Jones. He was just going to come in to give Jones a breather and keep him fresh because Jones was having a tough time staying healthy. Next thing you know, he's getting all the touches inside the 20's and getting a significant amount of carries. I'm not saying that is going to happen in SF, but I don't think the coach talking about decreasing the workload for your #1 RB on your fantasy team can be termed as a big non-event.

If the 49ers consider Hicks their backup, they have a funny way of showing it. As a RFA, he was tendered a 1-year contract at the lowest level. And, because he was a UDFA coming into the league, if someone signed him away SF would receive no compensation.

TEN and MIA have been mentioned as teams who may have interest.

plus San Fran is a couple of years away from playoff contention.

1. This is the NFL, any team can turn it around in 1 year.2. 49ers were 7-9 in 2006, the last play-off spot in the NFC was an 8-8 team. In 2004, two NFC teams made the play-offs at 8-8.

Believe it or not, I'm aware that baseball and football are two different sports. I assumed you could make the logical connection with me. In baseball, pitchers are protected because their ability can decline because of overuse since throwing a pitch causes strain on the body. In football, instead of throwing pitches, it's getting slammed into by 250lb+ men running at you at full speed. Both take a toll on the body, and it stands to reason that taking less hits and throwing future pitchers takes a lower toll on the body than throwing more.LJ is GOING to be limited - that's already been reported, and you need go no further than the data provided about RBs who previously had as high a number of touches that LJ did to see the documented concern for a drop-off.And LT2, you know, is one of the greatest RB's of all-time. Look, you asked why they would limit Gore, and that is the answer my opinion.

We are not talking Gore has 400 carries...... he had 312 carries last year and they say he will get fewer than that. That is less than 20 carries per game. I would project him to get 300+ carries this year.
