Gossip Sites Starting To Report On Social Media Cancellation Attempts As If Real News (1 Viewer)

While you used to be able to ignore your significant other (okay, ignore her) when her beach reading turned to the gossip section, now you're more likely to find a woke conversation on the other end. I've noticed that gossip tabloids have taken it upon themselves to report on the proclivities of those on social media, deeming it "news." This has gone on for a while, with CNN and other foolish news stations breathlessly reporting and retweeting what your idiot Uncle in Pensacola thinks, but this has gone even further. It seems like the tabloids are actively combing social media accounts and reporting on the general vibe or complaints contained therein, as if they were issued with critical authority or newsworthiness.

To wit: Licorice Pizza, the new film by Paul Thomas Anderson has been met with stern, serious reports by TMZ and the Daily Mail that contain the stunning allegations of adult/child romance and Japanese racism. Oh yes, seems like people took to social media (all four of them) to complain about the possible romance between a 25 year-old woman and a 15 year-old boy. There is also apparently a scene in which Japanese accents are mocked. While perhaps these are legitimate concerns, it is a period piece about 1970s California, and Paul Thomas Anderson has said he wanted to capture the spirit of the times rather than make it appropriate for a 21st Century lens.

Fair enough. My point is that what I've been seeing out of TMZ and the tabloids is a lot of divisive #### in the name of sales, maybe the same as other news outlets, but ten times stupider and crasser. Just an FYI if you're at the beach and she wants to talk to you about cultural appropriation.

Perhaps the problem is you’re watching TMZ and reading the tabloids?

No. All I did was type in "Licorice Pizza" into Google, and those were the two leading stories.
But I’m still having trouble understanding why this interests or upsets you. It’s TMZ.

Or is this just yet another complaint that woke and political correctness have gone “too far”? They haven’t. In the big picture these types of anecdotes are meaningless.

It's a new dimension about the intrusion of woke on our beach reading, tim. I don't know how much more I could have spelled it out for you. It's now become completely the province of Mindy Metalman's rubes and idiot followers, best left to what Mindy Metalman and her rubes and idiot followers do. Bicker about the leading ladies and men of the day.

I’m happy to see woke intrude into every part of our lives. As a general rule.

For as long as I can remember, news programs have stopped random people on the street like "your idiot Uncle in Pensacola" and asked them what their reaction or opinion was to something in the news. I don't see this being any different and certainly not something to get upset about and start a thread.

It's become the crux of TMZ's reporting -- and the Daily Mail's. I've noticed this because the television in the main room in my house from 4-5 PM is occupied by the two (nobody watches it, but it comes on after KTLA's afternoon news programming) television versions of their publication empire. And where the people are buying, the gossip rags lie. This is news because those publications are mirrors that flatter the reader by serving them piping hot dishes of whatever they're craving, healthy or not.

We can tell what the public is buying by reading the gossip rags and what they lead with.

So...just a bellwether that woke is now beach reading.

Right.  Sure.  Because nothing could go wrong or be an unintentional consequence of this trend.
Oh tons can and does  go wrong. And there can be and are, tons of unintentional consequences.

My position is the trade off is worth it. We gain far more as a society than we lose.

I am sure the trade-off is worth it if your life is not destroyed...as long as it's some peon from flyover country all is good.

I have no idea what you’re referring to. Obviously I don’t want to see anyone’s life destroyed (who doesn’t deserve it that is.) I don’t know why you added the part about “flyover country”- you seem to be projecting a bias in me that I simply don’t have.

I think you know exactly what I mean...you said the trade-off is worth it and yes, I am absolutely projecting a bias.

Would it make you feel better if the movie studio hired someone to create a fake group to protest the film?

How often are peons in flyover country having their lives destroyed due to non-deserved wokeness? My guess is it’s exceptionally rare.

Which is why I had no idea what he was talking about. Just about every target of political correctness that I’m aware of, whether justified or not, has occurred in pretty large cities on the coast. So where is the bias?

You are assuming that people in the flyover states deal with the same woke problems as the coasts.  Well they don’t, so why force non issues to them?

You’re the second person who’s brought up flyover states. I have no idea what this has to do with flyover states.

To answer your question as best I can, I would like to see every person treated with dignity and respect in every state. That’s all woke is about, really. Respecting others.

Mob mentality in the name of "social justice" or "wokeness" is rarely right or ok. I despise the social mobs.
Again it depends on what the mob mentality is about.

For instance, most people don’t use the N word these days. That’s because if you do, there is a mob mentality that will lead to you being ostracized for it. I think that’s a good thing. And I disagree with you that it’s rare. Actually it’s the excesses and bad results that are rare.

I can give you example after example where the mob was wrong and jumped to incorrect conclusions. By then it's to late for the victims of the mob.

Of course the N word is bad. It's been bad for decades. 90% of the population knows this or should.

Well, 90% is a pretty big mob.

And that’s the point. We want to reach a society where everyone is treated with equal respect: minorities, women, gay, trans, etc. That’s what woke is leading us to. When the mob is wrong, it should be called out. There shouldn’t be any innocent victims. But the answer isn’t to do away with woke, it’s to improve it. Just like we don’t need to defund the police, we need to improve them. Same concept.

How about the kid at the White House looking at the Indian.  What side was the mob mentality on?  How about Rittenhouse, nary an apology from difference makers with their words.  The mob mentality seems to happen more from the left telling us how we should act, facts be damned.

This thread was meant to be a sort of light-hearted look into everything but Tim is doing his darndest to create his own straw man in here. This is just silly talk.

Here’s a little assignment for everyone… watch Monday Night Football tonight.  There will be at least one story, likely two, that focuses on someone overcoming oppression.  Just broadcast the damn game.

Agreed. The “human interest” story, also specifically designed for women during **** Ebersol’s reign as producer of the Olympics, has now been politicized, with a special emphasis on the “underrepresented.” Just broadcast the game, please.

I suppose light-hearted looks in the Political Forum are doomed to fail.
Yeah, I thought my casual sexism would draw more remarks and potentially be more of a sticking point, but damn if we aren't going to focus (hi, tim!) on how good it is that wokeness has permeated everything in our everyday lives.

First human interest story during the game tonight? Definitely Afro and Native American heritage emphasis, to the point where they said the costuming is traditionally "African and Native American."

Yep. Figures.
