Wonder if guys like Lowe and Keri get moved over to ESPN proper
Seems like Lowe could make ESPN a ton of money as a insider author, and I think Lowe enjoys having ESPN's access. But given that they just apparently blindsided him with this news it's tough to see that working out now.
People still use insider? I mean for NBA, it's basically Ford, Amin, and Pelton and it's not like that content isn't available for free other places.
I'd consider paying for it if Lowe was on there.
I'd be shocked if Lowe was still employed by ESPN at the end of the NBA season. Lowe following Simmons makes too much sense.
Agree Lowe will leave based on his tweets if nothing else. I wonder what Simmons's plan is (is he building another site?).
At a minimum he needs content for his TV show (whatever form that takes).

He has a show on HBO, the podcast, and then some TBA site/venture that seems like it's going to be pop-culture-oriented, based on the Grantland guys he poached.

I though Phillps' story on Luis Suarez is the best thing he did for Grantland. Sea of Crises has some amazing stuff, but the disparate parts never really pulled together into a unified piece for me.

Subjective as to whether it worked, but I think the looseness/disjointedness was by design, at one point the author mentions how not all novels in Japan end in a conclusive manner, citing one of his favorite books where a protagonist trips in a rush of people during a fire, and sees the Milky Way in the sky.

At one point the author alludes to feeling strange/disconnected, and that's never explained. The article also ends abruptly.

Regardless, whatever one thinks of it, it's a damn shame that the venue where something like that could exist is now gone.

I have no doubt that it was by design. I just disagreed with the design.

Richard Dietsch of SI interviewed former Editor in Chief Chris Connelly. http://www.si.com/more-sports/2015/11/01/grantland-chris-connelly-interview-bill-simmons-espn

Since we talked about this part here...

RD: Deadspin had a source tell it that regarding the four editors who left Grantland to work with Simmons, as a condition of their employment, they could not warn anyone at ESPN or Grantland they were leaving. What can you clarify there?

CC: They gave us two weeks notice, as they should have done. I don’t know anything about that report, but these are classy people, Mallory Rubin, Sean Fennessey, Juliet Litman and Chris Ryan. They are all good people who did amazing work at Grantland. I was very sad to lose them and the site was sad to lose them. I thought all along it was important that we acknowledge the great work they did.

Connelly doesn't say much of anything in the course of the long interview. A good editor could have cut it down to Tweet length.

I did enjoy Dietsch asking him how big of an ##### Connelly thought he (Dietsch) was for constantly reporting that Connelly wouldn't grant him an interview.

It was a fine site but good lord with all of the public whining from the ex-employees. The economics changed and the higher ups 86'd the place. They should be thankful they had a great place where they were paid well to write about and host podcasts about sports and pop culture. We do the same thing here but for free.

:goodposting: good lord could he possibly have said any less with any more words?

I'll miss Pierce's writing there.

I guess The Nerdist is doing some kind of a sports section now, but I can't figure out exactly what they are doing. I guess they are sensing the opportunity with Grantland having helped whet people's appetite for some of the more alternative/intellectual approaches sports.

Simmons has just launched his new website, "The Ringer".

(Well, technically the website isn't up yet, but the first newsletter came out today.)

So far I am not impressed. "Grantland" was kind of a silly name, but it had historic undertones and eventually I got used to it. But "The Ringer" just comes off as generic and a little desperate. Also, it's kind of weird to be openly asking for job applicants on your Twitter feed. That's the kind of amateur stuff that you expect from Bleacher Report.

Anyway, the heart of Grantland was the solid writing -- including regular pieces written by Simmons himself. If The Ringer can replicate that, then I'm in. But if all we get are a few third-rate articles written by nobodies (and if Simmons stops writing), then I'm done.

Vox and 538 post job openings on Twitter as well - it's what companies full of young people do.

I'm just shocked there's a newsletter.  How is that not just a twitter feed?  Weird mix of old and young there.
