I love reading Simmons but I'm not really into sports so I really hope this catches on. I find him funny and I like his little footnotes. I also hope he does a mailbag column once a month, I always looked forward to reading those.

I love it. Simmons' piece on Lebron was very good, and Klosterman's column worked as well (Klosterman annoys the crap out of me on Simmons' podcast, but I liked his writing here). I liked the baseball guy too.

I was cautiously optimistic about Grantland. Day 1 has me fired up.

like it. I'm curious if the BS Report podcasts stay on ESPN or if it morphs into a Grantland series with different hosts.
They're already listed on the Grantland site. He's mentioned he wants to have a Podcast network with different contributors - the BS Report podcasts would still remain presumably, there would just be other voices with their own brands as well.

I've gotta admit, anything having to do with Lebron psychology fascinates me. The Vanity Fair piece in the off-season, which detailed how his mom used to just leave him (only child) for days on end, explains a lot.

My armchair psych. theory is that he needs to be loved first, which puts being the best at putting a ball through a ring second. People criticize him for shutting down, but I don't think he really has any control over it. Things get intense, and he just disengages. A real shrink could probably have a field day with him.

I like it a lot more than ESPN's main site. I'm sure there will be some dogs in there, but overall I like the tone more. And the layout. I have high hopes, even though Simmons is hit and miss for me. Savvy move having his normal ESPN column redirect to the Grantland site.

I think the best part of all this is Chuck Klosterman will be featured regularly writing about sports. He's even in the menu line right next to Bill Simmons. I absolutely love reading his stuff on music especially and he even makes reality TV interesting. His essay on football is one of the best sports pieces I've read. Ever.

If we're now going to be getting regular columns from Chuck and Simmons, plus the occasional Malcolm Gladwell piece, this may quickly become my favourite website. Interested to see what Bill Barnwell comes up with when football season starts. All that it needs to put it over the top is Mike Tanier and an occasional Michael Lewis feature.

I'll be sure to catch all of Gladwell's work; I like him very much.

As for Simmons himself, I just have to skip over the columns that focus exclusively on reality shows. I'm of an age where that holds zero interest for me but apparently it strikes a chord with legions of his younger readers. And I wish he liked college football and basketball a little more because there's oodles of humor potential in both.

I enjoyed Klosterman's DVR article. Makes a lot of sense.

ESPN's lead story is the Dirk article on grantland, so it looks like ESPN will promote the site pretty heavily. I know Simmons cursed in his article yesterday, so that may lead to some issues.

Cousin Sal tweeted that he was happy for Bill and said something like "it takes balls to leave ESPN". Is this true? Will all his new stuff be exclusive to grantland and ESPN will just link it?

Believe he was being sarcastic.

So Day 3 brings us Simmons on why the Bruins are awesome and Eggers on why Wrigley is awesome. Well written pieces, but so obvious and tired. What's next? Klosterman's essay "Pizza: #### Yeah" and Malcolm Gladwell's piece "Finding the Correlative Between Kate Upton's #### and My Erection?"

Seems like the whole spirit behind that Bruins column was "####, the AP caught me sitting on the glass...I gotta flip this around somehow."

Dont understand the hate for this site from Deadspin, but they would rip the site if the site no matter what.

Enjoy the columns so far

I also find Deadspin [...] to be a little sad.
Deadspin has done some cools things, like expose the Brett Favre story or stand up for the little guy, but most of the time it's just a bunch of people throwing rocks at the establishment...which is cool I guess, because everyone hates ESPN now...
The Favre thing was tabloid nonsense. What value did that story have? Athletes send pictures of their weiner to chicks all the time. I don't find it interesting.
Congressman Weiner, is that you?

A lot of articles early. No doubt they started with a backlog of features, but will be surprised if they keep up the volume of material each day.

I wish. He does appear to be packing.

The Bruins article enraged me more than any sports article I've ever read. I hope this is a complete failure. Used to be a huge Simmons fan, but I can't stand the guy anymore.

I still like him, but I completely understand this sentiment after reading this column. This was my favorite:
Before Vancouver pulled him in Game 4, the Boston crowd was derisively singing, "Loooooo-on-goooooooooooo. Loooooo-on-goooooooooooo. Loooooo-on-goooooooooooo." Is that sound still ringing through his head?
I'm sure it's absolutely haunting him. Because the Bruins fans in the 2011 Stanley Cup are the first fans in the history of hockey ever to mockingly sing the name of the opponent's goalie while he's having a bad game. That sentence might as well have read: "I never go to hockey games, or even watch them in TV with the sound on, but I'm gonna write about it anyway."

You mean every team does this? Even in the regular season!?!? :jawdrop:It's hard to buy that hockey wasn't great before this year.

I don't like/follow Hockey. Can you explain what made you so enraged?

:lmao: I'm even told that some incredibly rowdy hockey fans have been known to loudly chant that the goals allowed by the opponent's goalie were "all his fault," that the goalie resembles a funnel, vacuum or similar device, or even that he "just sucks." I assume that only happens in Game Seven of the Stanley Cup Finals, though.

I'd be happy to, as soon as I can sit down at the computer (typing this from my cell phone).

For starters, when that article was first posted, he was referring to Rich Peverley as "Patrick Beverley." He later edited it and blamed the error on jet lag. This from a guy who claims to have been following the Bruins all season long.

Dude, calm down. Will Timmons is awesome!

Fixed your post.

Hope it turns out better than The National Sports Daily
Feeling pretty psychic over here.
The stuff on The National is pretty good (thankfully not the band). At the least, it's a great idea.
Although, running stuff about the National failing on like your first week in business is kind of like starting a new airline and showing Alive as the first in-flight movie, or only having copies of Titanic available to watch on your new cruise ship, right?

How did you find your way here?

Good concept, I still have a hard time reading feature articles like this online though. Gonna have to print out anything I really want to read and I don't think I'm alone there, I'd say it's a problem.

Good reading for the can, for sure. I'm so used to looking at a bazillion ads around reading content online that it actually does take some time to get used to, so I kinda know what you mean.

I liked the article on cricket. Had some funny moments.

Surprised how much quantity they pushing out. I guess I shouldn't be, but still it's a lot more each day than I was expecting.

yeah site is damn awesome so far. None of the in your face ESPN BS that all ESPN sites have. Makes it hard to even click on pure garbage sites like Deadspin now

Check out Instapaper. It allows you to "pin" long articles around the web and then come back to them offline at a later date. Very cool app.

I have to say this site has gone beyond what I hoped. I have no idea if they can keep cranking out so much good material every week but I will be constantly checking the site out.

Review of the site from ESPN

Pretty honest assessment, considering the source. Interesting how consumed Deadspin is with the site.
What has Deadspin been saying? If we get a couple of interesting feature stories a week out of this effort, then those of us who appreciate good writing and non-standard approaches to light-hearted topics like sports and pop culture will be ahead of the game. I've found a bunch of stuff worth reading so far so no beefs from me.

The Blake Lively article strikes me as, odd. Is that the kind of content we're going to get, axe grinders?
