Grantland.com (2 Viewers)

There was an article that came out last summer that alluded to him making this kind of dough. He apparently had big offers from other major media when his last contract was up. He seems like he started Grantland because he wanted some form of autonomy. The article also addressed how much money he makes for espn. He basically transformed their website. He's getting paid. And as an aside, I read Hannah Storm makes 750k. Bill is easily worth 2-3 times that.
All that being said, Grantland still sukks.

I disagree. Its very hit or miss, but there are some good articles on there. There is also some crap. I wouldn't say that it sucks, though.

When you go back to what Simmons said about his goals for the site prior to it launching, there was clearly a focus for it to be much more focused on the more in depth articles/features (like this week's oral history of the Artest Melee) to serve as a written extension of the 30 for 30 series. He always pitched it as a place where you would find the reality TV crap sprinkled in a bit so it wouldn't have an exclusively heavy feel to it, but I would say the ratio of those types of articles that have been produced is definitely way higher than expected. Can't say I blame them, it would be very difficult to have a daily site accomplish that.

Loved the Obama interview.

But, even in fun, I did noticed the guy tends to brag about himself which the right always #####es about.

There's just a huge proportion of what I'd call "half-baked" articles. They might have four half-assed incomplete takes on the Jeremy Lin story instead of one insightful and fully considred one. Now, that's a problem with online journalism in general, but it's particularly noticeable in a site that has marketed itself on the idea that it will do think pieces.

:goodposting: I like the guy, but man did he brag like a maniac in that interview.

Obama: When I was U.S. Senator I was way ahead of the curve on the podcast thing.

Obama: — doing good. And I knew about Jeremy [Lin] before you did, or everybody else did.

Obama: Yes, we played a game of HORSE. Now, Maya [Moore] is always annoyed that I point out that I beat her.

Obama: So Chris [Paul] was one of the guys who played [in Obama's birthday basketball game]. And I did a little crossover on him. He claims that he could have stolen the ball. Everybody who was there knows that that’s not true.

Obama: I am very proud of the fact I do not cheat when I’m playing golf. Anybody who plays with me, they’ll say I count my strokes. I count my strokes.

Obama: I remember I visited Iraq as a senator, and I think at that point I had already started running for president, but I can’t remember. Anyway, they invited me to go into this gym, and there were like 3,000 of our troops there. And somebody just handed me a ball and said, "Come on, Mr. President, take a shot." And I said, OK, and I shot it and swished it from the 3-point line.

I never thought Simmons could top his podcast with Larry Bird last month, but I think he just did.

link
Didn't he have a big beef with ESPN a few years back about doing a podcast/interview with Obama? ESPN pulled the plug on the interview if I am remembering it - might have been when Obama was the Democratic nominee?

Yeah he had an interview lined up and ESPN cancelled it, i believe that was when he went on his hiatus

Found most of those comments tongue in cheek. As did Simmons as he jibed the President numerous times after some of these comments.

I just opened it. Here are the articles on the front page.A Fitful Marriage - A midseason report on the OKC Thunder (miss)

Free Agent Hype Chronicles - Bill Barnwell on NFL Free Agents. (miss - I've tried to read Barnwell on this site and I haven't gotten through one article yet.)

NCAA Power Rankings - Hit? I guess?

Obama Podcast - Big hit. Even though I thought Obama came off pompous....

Malice at the Palace - Waaaaay too long for me...and I hate the NBA. (miss)

Reality Fantasy League Scorecard - Miss every week. Bad concept....cut the cord on it.

There's an article if Carmelo and Lin can co-exist. An article on 30 Rock. An article on the NHL Trading Deadline???

Without the Obama interview (which he would have had if he just kept his ESPN gig), there's nothing there I'm clicking on as a must read.

Malice at the Palace was a great read. Took me all week, but it was very good. Lots of insight I didn't know.

I like pieces that are highly critical of the NFL and Charles Pierce roasts the league pretty good today about the bounties being paid for injury-inducing hits. His hypothesis that the league is more upset about the public finding out about the bounty system than the system itself is right on, IMHO.

And along those same lines, Justin Halpern wrote a funny piece about fan loyalties yesterday. You might not like it very much if you're an avid fan of an NFL team. I liked it a lot.

Cuban pretty annoying on BS Report. Just a know-it-all. Just dominates the conversation with his "knowledge" and a lot of times he doesn't make sense IMO.

I thought it was pretty good, but I'm looking at it more for entertainment value than trying to absorb some new sports analysis. Cuban is a more lively entertaining guest than Marc Stein or Mike Lombardi. That said, I still look forward to the Cousin Sal podcasts more than any other.

Palace article is about as far from a miss as you can get. That article is getting tons of love.
Yea, that's one of the best articles since they launched the site. A great read with lots of new info.
As a Pacers fan, I will always hate Ron Artest no matter what stupid name he wants to go by. I'll also always hate Ben Wallace. I don't want to hear any excuses about his brother, etc. The dude had been a thug the entire playoff series the year before and throughout the whole game. Yeah it was a hard foul, but there's no question that his sustained reaction was a major catalyst. And the Detroit fans that were there were just total trash. The dude that threw the beer still comes across like a total db. And I wasn't aware that Donaghy was one of the refs. Those refs were as responsible as anyone for what happened. Their officiating in that game and there chickenbleep running away as soon as things started to go south played a huge role. And they suffered no punishment at all.I don't think Pacer fans will ever stop being bitter about this. I'm convinced this day that the Pacers were clearly the best team in the league that year and would have won a title. That idiot Artest and buffoon Wallace cost Reggie Miller his ring. In what should have been the ultimate swan song and awesome culmination of Miller's career, a bunch of losers ruined it.

I enjoyed the Cuban interview just a bit annoyed on how much of an "authority" he seems to think he is. Outisde of hitting the lotto or being born a Rockefeller one of the luckier windfalls I've ever heard of. That said he's a great owner and would love to have him own my favorite teams.Cousin Sal for football and Jack-O for baseball are must listens to. Rather listen to that then anything I could hear on sports radio. Couple of guys who know their stuff without the hackey persona's and limitations of commerical radio. It's a great site but the NBA coverage is a bit dissappointing because I can't take Jalen Rose. Likeable guy but he's just not on the money nor funny. Lots of room for improvement on that front. Looking forward to hopefully some good baseball coverage.

Here are questions for not only Simmons but also for anyone else who likes reality shows:

1. Aren't reality shows based on a single joke, i.e., the people on them are really stupid and so hungry for fame and attention that they will act even stupider because of it?

2. If No. 1 is true, why wasn't this joke old and boring 10 minutes into your first reality show?

Many reality shows are like this, but occasionally you run into great ones where you believe that the participants are genuine and are really willing to do anything for a stupid prize. Most of the good ones revolve around a bunch of emotionally unstable girls stuck in the same house competing for the same pathetic thing and watching em fight it out. It doesn't get old. It's very possible that in some cases, I'm not witnessing something genuine and just something staged, but if they can convince me it's real, then I don't see how this is different than any movie or TV show where the participants are trying to sell me of a fictional premise.

Oh, I don't think they're staged. Contrived for stupid melodrama, for sure, but not really staged. But it's a one-note joke with the same punch line every time.

Former Pacer fan here. Artest is still one of my all time favorite players. Was very happy to see him get a ring with the Lakers and I thought he should of won the Finals MVP since Kobe tanked so bad in game 7 while Artest single handily carried the team on his back to victory. The over the top draconian suspensions Stern handed out to the Pacers might be the most irresponsible and outrageous act any commish of a major sports league has ever done.I still look as Wallace as one of the all time biggest punks in nba history due to that event. I actually loved the guy's game before that, but to this day I still have absolutely no respect for the guy.Agree that the Pacers would of won the nba finals that season had the Palace had adequate security and the refs actually did their job instead of running and hiding on that fateful night. To this day, I have no idea why Pacers' players/coaches/staff didn't sue the Pistons and owners/operators of the Palace. Doesn't make any sense.

 comedy is subjective and I don't think it's as repetitive as you imply. Big Bang Theory is certainly more predictable than most reality shows. Anyway, I do think most reality is crap, but it is popular for a reason beyond just blindly assuming that all viewers are lemmings.

Believe me, I appreciate the way Simmons and his gang can make the funny about the goings-ons in these shows, even if I don't get any of the references. But I guess I'm just a grumpy old guy who doesn't actually get them myself.

Mark Titus suggests, among other things, that March Madness holds a team draft to determine brackets. No more #####ing at the selection committee, just #####ing at your coach if you don't like his decision.

My ff drafts divisions and playoff opponents and Simmons has been advocating for the NBA to have top seeds pick their playoff opponents so maybe this idea is ever so slowly gaining momentum. I love stuff like that.

Super math fail:

Do you realize Charlotte has a chance to finish with the NBA's worst winning percentage ever? The '73 Sixers own the worst 82-game record (9-73); the '99 Grizzlies own the worst strike-shortened record (8-42); and the '48 Providence Steamers set the records for fewest wins (they went 6-42), lowest winning percentage (.125) and most times someone said, "They put a team THERE?" (215,563 times and counting). The Bobcats have blown 50 of their 57 games for a remarkable winning percentage of … (wait for it) … .123.

.123!!!!!!

They could win one more game and still set the record (.121), but if they blow their last nine and finish 7-59, that drops them to an unfathomable .108. Even better, that means Michael Jordan would have direct ties to the best regular-season team ever (the '96 Bulls) and the worst regular-season team ever (the '12 Bobcats). Stay classy, MJ.
1. Providence did not set the record for lowest winning percentage. (The '73 Sixers did.)2. If Charlotte wins one more game, they won't set the record.

3. If Charlotte finishes 7-59, they will finish at .106, not .108

:wall:

As someone who follows CBB a fair amount, he is ####### terrible. And he doesn't seem like a particularly nice fellow either. Their soccer guy is good, though. And Charlef Piercf is brilliant.

I don't know much about Titus in general because I don't follow college ball very closely and that seems to be what he writes mostly about. I just like the concept of picking opponents wherever and whenever possible, if for no other reason than for all the hard feelings that will be generated.Pierce is indeed wonderful and just wrote a great piece on Ozzie Guillen and the Cuban-American community in South Florida.

I wish BS would quit with his "Entertaining as Hell Tournament" What's entertaining about watching the worst teams play for a playoff spot they are going to get crushed in?

He must have a lot of yes men telling him that's a great idea or something. Give me the lotto balls over getting assraped by the Thunder.

And how would his tournament prevent tanking? Teams would just tank in the tournament and guarantee themselves a lottery pick.Just a stupid, poorly thought out idea.

They are kind of his stock-in-trade.

So I just visited Grantland for the first time. I'm greeted with a story about the Kardashians on the top. HAHAHAHAHA. A gossip column for men. The wussification of the American man continues.
