Great teams you can't believe didn't win a championship (1 Viewer)

1998 Vikings

Still shocked they lost to the Falcons. Not even sure what the line was on that game but it's one of the greatest teams I have ever seen.

I'm sure I can think of many others but this one stands out the most to me. Whatcha got? Doesn't have to be professional, does have to be a team sport though.

1990 Bills. They win that one and I think they're the dynasty of the 90s. Wide right got in their heads but that team was like a Pro Bowl lineup on both sides of the ball.

Favre's Vikings

Refs and New Orleans screwed that team over. Viking mopped the floor with the Saints that day. Favre was the star of that game but the receivers cost the game. The game could have been over after the 3rd quarter had it not been for the fumbles. Then, the illegal hits on Favre were atrocious.

And, as a Packers fan, I hate the Vikings but they deserved to be in the Super Bowl that year.

98 Vikings was my first thought, especially being a Vikings fan.

Still remember where I was when Gary Anderson missed that kick, how I dropped to my knees, and felt like I got punched in the stomach. First serious sports letdown of my young life.

First one which came to mind before I opened the thread. I believe the Falcons were getting 10.
BTW, a lot of people seem to remember that Dirty Birds team which got blasted by Denver in the Super Bowl as a bunch of bums. They were 14-2.

Regardless, if Anderson doesn't choke -- and make no mistake, he CHOKED - we get an epic Super Bowl matchup.

Yeah I know Atlanta was 14-2 but they might as well have been 9-7, I don't think they were close to the Vikings in talent.

Gotta be a Schottenheimer team in here somewhere IMO.

The best team rarely wins in baseball, I don't even wanna start down that road.

UNLV loss to Duke

Phi Slamma Jamma loss to NC State

Georgetown loss to VIllanova

If UK losses a game this season I will be shocked. They embarrassed one of my favorite teams (KU).

90-91 UNLV
At the time, absolutely. In hindsight, freshman Grant Hill was exactly the type of athletic player needed against that UNLV team that was sorely missed in the title game the year prior. Plus, Laettner continued to make the leap his junior year towards becoming one of the best college players ever.

I don't think that Duke team beating UNLV compares to Falcons/Vikings and Gary Anderson's miss.

1987 49ers. 13-2 (granted, 3 wins were during the strike), finished with the #1 offense and #1 defense, Jerry Rice with 22 TDs in 12 games. Then got steamrolled by Anthony Carter and the Vikings at Candlestick with Montana getting benched. 3rd straight first round exit after winning SB19. Between those losses and Montana's back surgery in '86, people thought Joe might have been done. Instead, they retooled and came closer to a three-peat than any other team in memory.

There was a Steelers team, in 1976 IIRC, that posted something like six shutouts in a ten game span. Meanwhile Franco, Bradshaw and company were hitting their stride as an offense. But injuries hampered them in a playoff game and they failed to make the Super Bowl. Some old timers and even some former Steelers call it the best team of that era, better than the any of the four-time Super Bowl squads.

I was a little kid then and I still can't believe they lost myself.

Eta: Just looked it up, they gave up 28 total points on defense in the final nine games of the season with 5 shutouts. Wow.

2002 USC Trojans - football. That was the year they lost two games early, but by the end of the year Carson Palmer was the Heisman winner and they would have destroyed anyone they played.

1989/1993 Notre Dame - football. One of those two teams should have won the title. In 1989 Notte Dame beat 6 ranked teams, including #1 Colorado in the bowl game, but lost to Miami in the season. Miami had wins over three ranked teams that year, including the Irish. Norte Dame had a tougher SOS but Miami was voted champion because of the head to head result.

In 1993, Notre Dame won head to head vs. then #1 Florida State then proceeded to lose to Boston College the following week. Both teams finished with the one loss, but the title was given to Florida State despite the head to head result. The Irish should have won the title in one of those years had the voters been consistent.

1969 Vikings too. Most points scored. Least point allowed. All four defensive line starters in the Pro Bowl. Lost to KC 23-7 in SB IV.

Eff Favre. That team was far more lucky than good.

The 1998 team was incredibly more skilled, talented, and better coached (amazingly enough as far as Vikings coaching goes). I was in a catatonic shock after the lost to the Falcons.

No idea how 2007 Patriots not mentioned yet.
It was mentioned a little earlier but should have been the 1st post. An overwhelming favorite, they are the only team in NFL history to win every regular season game and lose the SB. They destroyed teams. They went for it on 4th down like it was 3rd down.

Oops, I can't read.

And yes, the NYG had no chance that game. That Patriots team had it all. Still don't know how they lost. That NYG front four put up the greatest performance I've seen by a line.

Giants front 4 played great, but the Pats OL and support blocking played horribly (think Pats/Chiefs from earlier this year). Film breakdown showed lots of missed assignments.

96 and 97 Indians.
The '95 team IMO was better than those two. 100-44 in an abbreviated season, literally outhitting everybody. Decent pitching too. Unfortunately, the Braves had Glavine and Maddux and they just shut us down.As for '97? #### Wayne Huizenga and the best team money could buy. #### them all with extreme and harsh predjudice.

That Duke team had 7 losses and were not the great team they were the following year. UNLV had crushed them the previous year, and were one of the best teams in NCAA history.

And if these upsets hadn't occurred, I'd easily put my money on UNLV taking out Kansas rather than Minnesota beating a great Denver team in the Super Bowl.

Highest scoring team of all time at the time and Dennis Green took a time out on the final possession? Still don't understand him not being fired for that.Denver threw a pick in the first on their 35 yard line and missed two field goals in the third quarter. Minnesota would have scored on those turnovers and just outscored Denver

2006 Mets.

Won the NL East by 18 games.

Cards took them to game 7 of the NLCS. With runners on first and third Beltran goes down LOOKING.

Cards then rolled a Tigers team that did nothing in the series.
