How is he still in the league after embarassing himself with Atlanta in 2003?38.6 completion %, 3.43 YPA, 32.5 QB rating, 2 TD, 6 INT in 114 attempts.KITT-ner!! KITT-ner!! KITT-ner!!
I don't know about helping them, but Orton looked outstanding the other night. Did everyone forget how highly touted he was before the Wisconsin game? There was talk of him winning the heisman before that fumble. I think he'll be ok. Will he go off like Big Ben? NOPE, doesn't have the team around him that Ben did, but he should do well. I think he's better than Grossman anyway.I think this will help the Bears. Orton looked really good.
I concur! Orton got in the doghouse last season after the Wisconson game and was in a funk basically the rest of the year. He has Heisman Trophy talent. Now, whether that translates to NFL talent remains to be seen, but I agree that he is at least as good as Grossman. I've seen both play here in Indy and I give the edge to Orton. He could be another Drew Brees type player with a similar background from Purdue.I don't know about helping them, but Orton looked outstanding the other night. Wonderful, the bears go into the season with either Chad huchinson or a 4th round rookie Qb who looked good against 3rd stringers from a chitty Dolphins team. This is no way helps the bears. Worst news possible.I think this will help the Bears. Orton looked really good.

Rex Grossman is a punk if he can't play after this. Joe Namath had like 5 knee surgeries before he had to stop playing. You gotta feel sorry for Hex Grossman. The kids looks decent but we may never know whether he can be a good or great NFLer. He's become the QB version of Charles Rogers.
Unfortunately, good looks do not help out a quarterback in the skill department. Rex was and is a bad quarterback on a bad team. I'll be anxiously awaiting the Bears spending their top 3 pick next year on a MLB or DE...redundancy at strong positions, and ignoring weak ones seem to be a strong suit of the front office. You gotta feel sorry for Hex Grossman. it helps long term. Grossman was never the future, now they can get Leinhart. For 2005, expect a lot of 7-3 / 10-0 games, with the windy city on the losing end.Wonderful, the bears go into the season with either Chad huchinson or a 4th round rookie Qb who looked good against 3rd stringers from a chitty Dolphins team. (Aug. 12, 2005) -- Bears starting quarterback Rex Grossman suffered an injured left ankle during the first half of Friday's game at St. Louis. X-rays taken showed that he suffered a broken ankle and he's expected to miss three to four months. This will put him out likely until at least mid-season.
With Grossman out, No. 2 QB Chad Hutchinson moves up to fill in for Grossman.
Fantasy Analysis:
Because Hutchinson hasn't gotten a lot of work with the first-team offense, it's going to take him some time to build his timing with the receivers. With that said, we'll have to downgrade their receivers a little, especially No. 1 WR Muhsin Muhammad. Look for the team to make a very strong commitment to the running game under offensive coordinator Ron Turner. But unless Hutchinson is very effective, you'll see teams stack the box to force them to throw, which is why we'll also have to downgrade their backs somewhat.
Having a reactionary blanket strategy like that can cause you to ignore good, underestimated value, and could cost you a championship, my friend.I will avoid all Bears players at all costs. That includes their defense and kicker. Not that I wasn't doing that BEFORE the injury...
I have to disagree here. You don't spend a First Round Pick on someone who is not in your future plans.it helps long term. Grossman was never the future, now they can get Leinhart.
PK and most on offense, I can agree with, although at some point Moose and Benson/Jones become good values still. But the defense is pretty dang good. In IDP leagues for instance, Urlacher, Briggs, OGun, Tillman, Brown, Green, and even Tommie Harris are all worth owning. I happen to have 3 of these on one team.I will avoid all Bears players at all costs. That includes their defense and kicker. Not that I wasn't doing that BEFORE the injury...
THe Bears Def will be on the field alot due to a high number of 3 and outs by their anemic offense. This will help the Bears IDP, but not their total defense.Bears!
The defense will be Top 5 this year. The first stringers shut down St. Louis's high powered offense. ...and also Miami's low powered offense last week. Next on the docket: Indianapolis!
I agree, but I would amend "weeks" to "days." George could be signed for cheap, and he already has experience in the offense from his time there last year. Signing him makes sense, and they can still sign an additional backup in case George is too washed up.1) I would be STUNNED if the team went with Orton to start the year
2) I would be STUNNED if the Bears made a trade for another young QB as they already have Grossman and Orton on the roster
3) My guess is either Jeff Blake, Jeff George or Vinny Testaverde are given a serious look in the next few weeks
You know nothing about the Bears if you dont know Grossman was absolutely considered the future at QB.I have to disagree here. You don't spend a First Round Pick on someone who is not in your future plans.it helps long term. Grossman was never the future, now they can get Leinhart.
Yup....thats exactly what I said a few pages ago. Just no George. Blake and Vinny T have both had moderate success in the past couple of years in this league.....there is just no reason not to bring one of them in here. My vote would go to Blake first.Young qb wont happen because Im sure Angelo still thinks they are ok at the position for the future, with Grossman due back possibly by mid-November and Orton looking like hes got some good potential.1) I would be STUNNED if the team went with Orton to start the year

Wow he looked great against Miami's 4th stringers in the first preseason game. Get the hype wagon going now baby!Orton was a choker in the Big 10 season EVERY year. Sure he could throw 6 touchdowns against kansas school for the blind but once he played real teams he was very mediocre. Last year post Notre Dame game is a great example. Just look at his numbers the rest of the way.I don't know about helping them, but Orton looked outstanding the other night. Did everyone forget how highly touted he was before the Wisconsin game? Top 5 only if the NFL shortened games to 2 quarters.Bears!

Excellent use of the "Out of context" quoting! Why don't you go back and re-read what I posted?! Carson Palmer, Vinny Testaverde, Jim Plunkett, Roger Staubach, and Paul HornungHow is saying Orton has Heisman Trophy talent a compliment to his NFL prospects????
Charlie Ward, Ty Detmer, Wuerffel, Jason White, Eric Crouch......
I should have been more clear.Grossman was never going to be the future, he was considered the future, was the plan for the future, had everything going for him except the fact that he is simply not a very good QB.You know nothing about the Bears if you dont know Grossman was absolutely considered the future at QB.I have to disagree here. Um, Yes, Grossman was going to be the future, provided he play to the level a lot of people thought he would. He hasn't played enough in the NFL to conclude that he's good/bad QB, just that he's clearly injury prone, and that the Bears, if Grossman doesn't play this seaon (and well), will have to upgrade the position for next season.I should have been more clear.Grossman was never going to be the future, he was considered the future, was the plan for the future, had everything going for him except the fact that he is simply not a very good QB.You know nothing about the Bears if you dont know Grossman was absolutely considered the future at QB.I have to disagree here. The Bears D is going to be TOUGH. The D line is coming together nicely and that means good things for the DBs and LBs. They were good last year with most of their starters missing considerable time. This year, look out. Unfortunately they will have to be good . Another thing is this team will be just good enough not to get the first pick, so forget the Leinhart talk.Top 5 only if the NFL shortened games to 2 quarters.Bears!

I agree. Not much has changed. The QB position is the weak link in the Bears. Bears want to run the ball and smash teams with the D. I wasn't convinced Grossman was the answer. The only difference now is he doesn't get to prove it on the field. Hutch isn't great but let's see how he does. Get Cedric in camp, how hard is it to hand the ball off to Benson and Jones? The mistake the Bears made is having no one with any amount of NFL QB experience on the roster for depth.Even with a healthy Rex Grossman, the Bears still didn't know what they had (or didn't have) despite the optimism that he could the answer at QB. With Chad Hutchinson forced into the #1 role now, I believe that he just has to avoid the costly plays (I know, that's what everyone says about their uncertain QB's) because they will have a solid RB combo of Thomas Jones/Cedric Benson (whenever he gets signed), and Muhammed will still be a dependable option for Hutchinson.
However, I never believed the Bears were going to win games this season because of Rex Grossman's arm - it's the defense, running game that was going to be the key, and that hasn't changed - there's just more pressure on both now to come though.
If the defense plays as good as anticipated, they will be in most every game - from there it will be up to the RB's to control the clock, and Muhammed to take advantage of teams trying to stop the run.
I don't mean to minimize the loss of Grossman - Although it's not proven by statistical evidence, it is most likely a downgrade to Hutchinson.
Don't get me wrong, I understand they will be tough. My point is that fatigue makes the best Ds look bad. If the offense can't sustain drives they will be worn down by the middle of the 3rd every game. Opposing teams will force the Bears to throw the ball to beat them with Hutchinson, Orton, or whoever they throw out there. The Bears D is going to be TOUGH. Agreed. Orton may show some promise, but by going with the rookie, the team would be basically sending a message that they're giving up on the season from the get-go.After last year's performance post-Rex, it's highly unlikely that they can go in that direction.1) I would be STUNNED if the team went with Orton to start the year
Yeah, kinda like the Steelers did last year. Whoever said the weak link in the Bears O is the QB was right. It's always been that way. Run the ball, play tough D, gut it out in the end. That's Bears football.Agreed. Fair point, but the Steelers drafted Ben with the expectation that he'd be the franchise QB sooner rather than later. Certainly the Bears drafted Orton with that label. Not to say that Orton doesn't have what it takes, but to immediately throw a relatively low round draft pick to the wolves seems a bit extreme from both a team and PR standpoint.

I have posted on this a fair amount. This won't happen.Rivers' original signing bonus was $7.65M, which is to be pro-rated over the 6 years of the contract for cap purposes. So $1.275M was paid in 2004, which leaves $6.375M to accelerate.Maybe the Bears will trade their 2006 1st round pick for Phillip Rivers. That makes sense for both sides.
The Bears 2006 1st round pick will never be higher than it is right now, and the Chargers have to think that's about as much as they could possibly get for Rivers.
The Bears get a top 5 drafted QB on the cheap, with a year of experience, immediately. They don't have to pay him any signing bonus, have him at great value for 3-5 years, and don't have to sift through the learning curve. He may be uneven this year (first year starting), but would be expected to play very well next year (like Carson Palmer's expected to play well for the Bengals this year).
Obviously this won't happen, because trades this big rarely happen in the NFL. But I do think it would be a big win-win for both sides.
It has been doumented several times in the same manner on some of the Charger fan forums. Quite simply the cap hit to trade rivers makes him untouchable.I have posted on this a fair amount. Rivers' roster bonus of $6.6M was paid on March 10. That is to be pro-rated over the remaining 5 years of the contract for cap purposes. The entire $6.6M is left to accelerate.
Rivers earned $75K in incentives in 2004. That stands to go on the 2005 cap and thus is left to accelerate.
I pieced a lot of this info together over the past several months, but assuming it is accurate, the Chargers would take just over a $13M cap hit to trade Rivers now. Given that it is after June 1, I think they could split the cap hit evenly across 2005 and 2006, but that is still an unplanned $6.5M hit for this season and next. I could be wrong on this, but I don't think the Chargers have that much cap room available.
On top of the cap ramifications associated with trading Rivers after this season would be the real dollars the Chargers will have invested in him, over $15M, for very little return... followed by presumably paying Brees a $10M+ signing bonus as well as a high dollar long term contract.
And they'd also have to sign a backup QB. Who would they get that they would be comfortable with? And that's more cap dollars and real dollars.
And on top of all that, I think the Chargers love Rivers' potential & abilities and I think they fully expect him to be a star NFL QB. I don't think they want to trade him.

Agreed. Mushin goes in to the Top-10 overall again this year w/ a guy like Blake tossing it.Hutchison isn't going to make anyone forget John Elway, but he's not so terrible that bringing in someone totally brand new is the best option.
