meh. A "shutdown" of DHS actually only affects about 30,000 employees. The other 200,000 employees are essential and keep on working (though, they will have to wait for their money. Of course those other 30,000 would get paid for their time off just like before.)

Maybe, but perception is reality, and the perception is that the Republicans are willing to sacrifice the safety of everyone in the country in order to throw a temper tantrum. They're going to keep a lot of doctors busy treating those self-inflicted gunshot wounds in their feet.

Do you really believe DHS ensures the safety of everyone in the country?

It's a pretty ridiculous question from a pretty ridiculous poster. If you don't know what the Coast Guard does, maybe you should find out. That agency alone is a key component to national security.

The Coast Guard was founded in 1790.

DHS was founded in 2002.
