Guess the Raiders 2010 1st Rnd Draft Pick Sweepstakes (1 Viewer)

Al Davis and the Raiders have been one of the most unpredictable and secretive organizations when it comes to the NFL Draft. Al has made so many questionable draft picks the past 10 years its become laughable, and quite frankly, embarrassing for the fans. So why not have some fun with it. I encourage everyone to think outside of the box, who will Al surprise us with this year? Will he go for a punter like he did in the 1970's when he drafted Ray Guy? Or another kicker like in 2000? Or will he draft borderline 2nd round talent in the 1st like he did by drafting Heyward-Bey last year? Or will they go BPA despite serious needs?

I for one think Al Davis will throw us all a curve ball and draft CJ Spiller. Al likes speed and RB is not a need for the team. Makes perfect sense.

So...Who's it going to be?

One of the talking heads on TV said he's 100% sure that Al will take USC DE Everson Griffin.

It would certainly fit his obsession with speed. Griffin allegedly ran in the 4.4 range in high school (though I'm guessing his actual time will be 4.5-4.7).

I like Griffin, but its too obvious.

Who are the fastest guys in the draft (relative to their positions)? Who has the most impressive measurables (relative to their positions)?

That's where I'd start my list. Ignore whether they can catch, run, block, or have any other football skills (see DHB, McFadden, Russell).

Judging by past history, it seems to help if their off the charts athletic skills are inversely proportional to their football specific skills.

This is likely entirely dependent on who runs fastest, jumps highest, throws farthest, and benches the most at the combine/pro days. Actually being able to play football is secondary if not immaterial.

Psssst... Ray Guy was a GREAT pick.
Yes, but could he have gotten him in the 2nd round? Probably.................I say the Raiders go with Anthony Davis. Back to basics...........
I was thinking Anthony Davis too. I'm a Rutgers fan and even went to Davis's high school (well before Davis though). Great talent, but inconsistent during games. Will wow people at the combine though. Seems perfect for the Raiders.

Darrell Green just posted a 4.43 40-time so you can't rule him out.

I'll go with Taylor Mays for the oddball pick.

This may be the hardest contest in the history of FBG!

Mays is a good pick. Davis hasn't done very well scouting safties in recent years though.Michael Huff  Derrick Gibson  Patrick Bates :sarcasm:

Yeah, but nobody is considering him at #8. Heck Walter Football has him falling to my Bengals at #21 (which I would be very happy with) or even possibly dropping to round 2 (which surprised me a little). Figured he's a reach at #8, so reach Al will :) I haven't scouted out the Northeast Conference or NAIA though so my pick might change ;o)-QG

I saw some initial mocks a month or so ago with Mays going to the Raiders. Now Mays seems to be dropping in mocks lately. Bengals #21 would be a nice fit.

Psssst... Ray Guy was a GREAT pick.
Please, he's a punter. The pick following Guy was CB J.T. Thomas, a Pro Bowler who was a big part of the Steelers' Steel Curtain defense; two picks after that was Hall of Famer G Joe DeLamielleure. Other guys the Raiders could have selected at that spot include RB Greg Pruitt (5 Pro Bowls), and QB Ron Jaworski (1 Pro Bowl). Any of those guys would have contributed more to the team than Guy did, because unlike a punter, they actually play football. (The Raiders also could have taken Harvey Martin or Dan Fouts, but they got another shot at those two with their second-round pick). It wasn't a disastrous pick, but taking a punter or kicker in the first round is never a great pick.

Oh, and I'd dispute the fact that Oakland is unpredictable.
WOW! Ok I may have to retract that statement.
FWIW, the guy that told him to lock in on DHB for the Raiders last year is telling him the same about Trent Williams this year. That could possibly change after the combine, but I'm buying.
Interesting....Stafford, DHB, Orakpo and Cushing are the only ones he got right in the top 15 picks. Maybe he knows someone inside the Raiders organization

That was only his 2nd mock and in early March. In his final mock he hit on 7 of the top 10 and hit on 12 overall.

Not bad....He actually had Harvin and Jerry correct in his second mock and changed them.

Seriously, there should at least be a Sebastian Janikowski bobblehead in it if any of us get this right  -QG
I'll see what I can do. I do have an old authentic Charles Woodson jersey I may be able to part with. :gang1:

Guy played a huge part in three Raiders championships. I'd rather have him than any of the guys you mentioned, mainly because we didn't need them at the time. If he wasn't a "football player," then why did they give him a helmet and shoulder pads? I guess the defense wasn't allowed to try to block his punts, since he isn't a football player?People make stupid arguments. Anyone who saw Guy play would realize he was worth his weight in gold.

Im going with Bolt there will be nobody with more speed and since he doesn't have a position Davis can make him into whatever he wants.

You'd rather have a decent punter than a hall-of-fame guard? Interesting. How many yards per game do you think Ray Guy provided to the Raiders, over a decent punter who could have been picked up for free? Let's compare him with John James, who entered the league in 1972 as a free agent and had a decent 13-year career. (Ray's was 14 years).Yards per punt:Guy 42.4James 40.6Net:Guy 35.0James 34.6Punts inside 20 per game:Guy 1.01James 0.86Punts per gameGuy 5.1James 5.8So, Guy's net was less than half a yard better than James' per punt; let's be generous and ascribe 2.5 yards per game to Guy's net total. Guy also was somewhat better at putting punts inside the 20; on average, he put one more punt inside the 20 every 6 games than James did. Let's be generous again and assume that putting a punt inside the 20 is worth 20 yards in field position, because the opposing team will have more trouble operating out of their own end.So in a typical 14-game season, Guy would directly provide about 42 yards in field position based on his net, and another 50 yards or so based on punts inside the 20. So for the course of a season, he averaged about 70 punts, which produced a little over 90 yards in field position relative to a decent free agent punter. You don't think that Joe DeLamielleure, who was on the field for some 800 plays per season and blocked for OJ Simpson when he went for 2000 yards, would have produced more than 90 yards per season for the Raiders? If he makes a difference of one yard every 5 plays, he blows away Guy's contributions. No player who sees the field 5 times a game is worth a first-round pick.

I actually had a Raider fan try and convince me that the Raiders were better at drafting than the Seahawks because the the Raiders picked Janikowski before Shaun Alexander and Janikowski has scored more points than Alexander.

HUH?

Did the same guy take Janikowski before Alexander in your fantasy league?

As long as it's not Anthony Davis, the former USC running back. I mean, sure, he scored 6 touchdowns in one game against Notre Dame but that was in 1972. He probably doesn't have much tread left. Don't do it, Al.

No but he took Thomas Jones in the first round of a mock draft (which I mocked him for), and now's he saying how smart he is because Jones did better than LT and Westy and others. He doesn't accept my point that he could have taken Jones A LOT later in that draft (or any draft).

Hmmm..... I have to think like Al Davis. So I have to think like a GM and then take away reason and accountability.

My answer: Dexter McCluster.

Being a Hawkeye fan I'm going to go with Bryan Bulaga. That will give the Raiders two former Iowa offensive linemen on the left side of the line in Bulaga and Gallery.
