Guy stands in the middle of the Wall of Death (1 Viewer)

I used to dance in pits all the time at NYHC shows I went to. Used to sommersault on the ground coming up into a roundhouse karate kick and then flail my arms all over the place windmill fashion. I was like a walking sick of it all video. Seems funny looking back on it but it was great fun back in the day. Only one broken nose to speak of but rest of my record is clean. I was beaten up by bouncers in Arizona at a AFI show because they didn't know what NY dancing was all about.
A co-worker of mine was the drummer from Agnostic Front's sister and used to get us into their shows for nothing. NYC hardcore shows were some of the most violent pits I've ever seen. To this day, the hybrid hardcore/metal beands like Hatebreed still foster some of the wildest pits.
This might be up my alley, but I'm also dated in my assessment. The two styles of dancing, at least in the '90s, seemed wildly different.

Thrash and metal and punk shows were fun. Keep your head on a swivel, pick up everybody, thrash about, get medieval. You had your occasional jerk. Generally, people were so happy to get a weird release that you singled those guys out and either reprimanded or avoided. This Wall of Death video actually cracks me up. I love the fat dude in the middle.

Hardcore pits were a minefield of flailing limbs, legs, karate kicks, gymnastics, and violent acrobatics. It was a sight and a disaster, and there was no camaraderie among pit members because all the "crews" that showed up to shows had solidarity with each other and generally only helped their friends out despite whether the fact, that say, for instance, he was diving at non-dancers' knees. I hated that stuff.

The thrash pits were fun to an extent, even though I can see the injury factor and why people think it is stupid; the hardcore pits constantly had people karate kicking and flipping and destroying backs of knees. But I was less into hardcore, so maybe I just didn't understand the rhythms behind it.

Oof. I'm glad I'm old sometimes.

Read Randy's statement yesterday, said he will return to the Czech Republic to stand trial if summoned to do so.

Excerpted :

"I would like state that I suffered no abuse, from either authorities or inmates, during my incarceration in Pankrác. I received no special treatment, and was in general population with everyone else -- make no mistake, it was prison, not some celebrity rehab TV show. But I was treated fairly by the guards and kindly by my fellow inmates. People are dying of starvation all over the world. Men and women are losing their lives daily in the Middle East and other war torn regions. I had food, clothes, shelter, and no one was trying to kill me. I cannot complain over a short stay in prison while many people elsewhere fight to survive on a daily basis."

"While I maintain my innocence 100%, and will do so steadfastly, I will NOT hide in the United States, safe from extradition and possible prosecution. As I write this, the family of a fan of my band suffers through the indescribably tragic loss of their child. They have to deal with constantly varying media reports about the circumstances surrounding his death."

"I am charged with maliciously causing severe bodily harm to this young man, resulting in his death. While I consider the charge leveled against me ludicrous and without qualification, my opinion makes no difference in this matter. The charge exists, and for the family of this young man, questions remain. The worst possible pain remains. It is fairly common knowledge amongst fans of my band that I once lost a child as well. I, unfortunately, am intimately familiar with what their pain is like. Therefore, I know all too well that in their time of grief, this family needs and deserves some real answers, not a media explosion followed by the accused killer of their son hiding like a coward thousands of miles away while they suffer."
Wow. No fan of that type of music but I have some serious respect for writing that statement. Most would have whined about treatment, rights infringement, etc. but he really took the high road. Awesome.
Met and chatted with Randy two days ago. Really, really great guy. I've met a lot of famous people and Blythe was maybe the most gracious and genuine. I broke off the conversation at one point and gave him an out so as not to be a pest and he re-engaged. Was genuinely interested in hearing what I had to say rather than just humoring me to be nice.Just figured I'd post it here since I wanted an excuse to read this thread again. So much funny stuff in here.
Just saw that the new record is out. Had no idea. Just bought it, as I've been anticipating it greatly since the ordeal Blythe went through and it's likely heavy influence on this album.

There are a few songs that deal with it . "512" notably, but there are a couple that talk about the prison and its history rather than his incarceration directly ("Still Echoes," my personal favorite on the record falls into that category.)

A thousand heads cut clean across their necks
Right down the hall from me.
The Reich's relentless blade, thirsty and shining red
Still echoes of their screams.

This is a tarnished heirloom, passed down through iron fists
A shameful house of doom, a legacy of collapse.
Built on a painful truth.

A thousand years of failure, a thousand years they bled.
To the bear, the blitzkrieg, and the holy father.
They just bowed their heads.

They meekly did their time
Counting the days while harnessed to their rusty shackles
Forever occupied, folded the crimson star,
The rabbits turned to jackals,
still echoes of their screams.

This is a tarnished heirloom, passed down through iron fists
A shameful house of doom, a legacy of collapse.
Built on a painful truth.

A thousand years of failure, a thousand years they bled.
To the bear, the blitzkrieg, and the holy father.
They just bowed their heads.

Soviet hangover eastern bloc.
And dirty money still flows through locks.
A killing ground of rebels, black marketeers
Restrained, but there's no resistance here.

South-east Asia in a Euro cell block.
Saigon's children conceal what they've got.
The opium trail runs west through here.
They're selling disease to erase all your fears.

Still echoes of their screams.
Still echoes of their screams.

A thousand years of failure, a thousand years they bled.
To the bear, the blitzkrieg, and the holy father.
They just bowed their heads.

I won't bow my head.
