Had a "Man, do I feel OLD music moment" today. OUCH. (1 Viewer)

This thread has made me feel musically old because I just recalled seeing the Sex Pistols play live for the Craig Ferguson show ...and remember calling back home to have somebody record it.  That's one old trifecta.

This portion of their music was before my heyday (Pictures was released a year after I was born). In the 80s, I became a Rush fan, also bands like Boston (from Boston, so that helped!), and Yes (Sorry @Ilov80s) which led me to exploring other progressive music. The Cozy Powell era of ELP was during that time as well. To match people up with the time, Carl Palmer didn't want to do a reunion in the mid 80s, because he was in the band Asia.

Greg Lake had such a beautiful voice. Still...You Turn Me On was a great song.

Not sure where Lake fell as a bassist, but Carl Palmer and Keith Emerson were near the top of the fields in their respective instruments.
Great musicians do not always make great songs.

Wanna know how old i am? I first felt this phenomenon when a girl i dated didn't know who The Doors were. That happened.......................................   ........ forty years ago this summer.....

... not to mention it was their 20 yr. anniversary tour when that went down

Bart:
Who are those pleasant old men?

Homer:
It's BTO. They're Canada's answer to ELP. Their big hit was TCB.

Homer:
That's how we talked in the '70s. We didn't have a moment to spare

Lake had a fantastic voice and the 3 of them were solid musicians who made some pretty good music. And they covered everyone from Copland to Joplin.

I'm not a drummer but I've always thought Carl Palmer is one of the most overrated drummers in rock 'n roll.  Before the prog guys start jumping on me, I'll give Palmer credit where credit is due.  He's an excellent technician.  His rolls are precise and he can play very very fast.  He's at his best as a soloist; he played an extremely large (and heavy) drum kit with a double bass, lots of gongs, cymbals, tuned toms and very early syndrums.

But here's my hot take.  The basic mission of a rock drummer is to keep time and establish a groove.  Palmer was so busy throwing in extra fills that he sometimes failed at job one.  I already spent time yesterday listening to Emerson's piano concerto so I'm not going to listen to ELP live tracks to find examples.  But this 1977 recording of their boogie woogie romp Tiger in the Spotlight, the band play like three individuals rather than an ensemble.  A song like this should swing more than it does and I think that's mostly down to Palmer.

In college, my friend and I would get super stoned, turn off all the lights, crank up Hoedown and  Karn Evil to 11, and play air-drums and air-keyboard for fun.

ELP haters gonna hate.

ELP is a second tier prog act with a good deal of distance from them to Yes, Genesis, King Crimson and Rush.

And some of you know how I feel about Rush

For the size and weight of the kit you describe:

... I don't feel any punch. It is like it is missing a track.

Edit: The lower bass track.

Is this on purpose? Anyone.

Appetite is over 30 years old.

The Beatles and other stuff that I thought was “old” when I was growing up were at the time more recent than that.
