Hakeem Nicks— WR, NYG — Questionable (1 Viewer)

Hakeem Nicks injury update: Expected to play after traveling with team, fantasy value unknown

By Kenneth Arthur on Oct 14, 11:39a

New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks traveled with the team to San Francisco this weekend, with many speculating that he will be active although we can't know that for certain until before game time. Nicks has not played a full season in his NFL career and this will be no different now that he has missed three games already in 2012 with knee and foot injuries.

The Giants star receiver had 444 yards in the playoffs last year but has only played in half that many games in 2012 so far, with 237 yards. If he plays, he'll be facing the 49ers number one scoring defense and number two passing defense.

Fantasy Take: Look at the evidence and then decide whether or not Nicks is a good start even if he is activated by New York. He is coming off of a knee injury, he's facing the 49ers on the road, and he had 199 of his yards this season in one game against Tampa Bay where everyone was going off.

If you have Nicks, then you've already been playing without him and would have a backup option in case he isn't able to go. Unless your other option is very bad, I wouldn't recommend throwing Nicks into the fire just yet. The 49ers are allowing an average of one passing touchdown per game and Victor Cruz is still an attractive option for Eli Manning.

from a few days ago and players are typically going to downplay their injuries, but still a good sign:

Giants' Hakeem Nicks proclaims himself pain-free and ready to go

The morning after returning to practice is usually when a football player knows if an injury will persist. That was the case for Hakeem Nicks Friday.

For the first time in two weeks, Nicks had participated in practice Thursday. He didn’t feel pain in his surgically repaired right foot or injured left knee.

But Nicks knew it wouldn’t mean much if he woke up yesterday morning and his knee was swollen again, as it was the Friday after he practiced two weeks ago.

Friday, he said, was the “deciding day” for whether he would play Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers. So far, so good.

“It wasn’t painful,” Nicks said of his knee when he woke up in the morning. “I could say that…I think today was definitely not a setback. I can say that.”

The wide receiver was confident enough to say he was “cautiously optimistic” about Sunday even though being officially ruled questionable for the highly anticipated NFC Championship rematch.

Two of the past three weeks, Nicks has been downgraded to

“out’’ the day before games, but barring a setback between Friday afternoon and Sunday, Nicks will return after missing the previous three games with the combination of injuries.

Nicks estimated that he participated in the majority of practice and took about “four or five reps a period,” which is what he normally partakes in during a Friday practice. Nicks said coach Tom Coughlin had asked him periodically on Thursday how he felt and whether he was compensating for the knee or foot. Nicks said the knee injury was a product of compensating for his right foot.

Friday was the first time he practiced on consecutive days in several weeks and his fellow wide receivers gave him a hard time on the sideline between plays.

“He’s just smiling. He’s happy, as much as we are, to be back,” Victor Cruz said. “So anything to keep him involved and keep him feeling like he’s still a part of us, obviously, is always good.”

Whether Nicks will be able to play at full speed is another matter. Nicks admitted that in the season opener against the Cowboys he was just “getting his feet up under me” and in Week 2 against the Buccaneers he felt like “I was just getting into it a little bit, now I just got to start over.”

In that game against the Buccaneers, he had 10 receptions for 199 yards and a touchdown — not bad for someone “just getting into it a little bit.”

“Anytime you go in there and you’ve got another weapon like Hakeem there, he’s got to be accounted for and it’s always positive for us and our offense,” said Cruz, who would benefit from Nicks’ return because he would likely face fewer double teams.

But, as always, there was still one more morning wake-up call to worry about this morning before Nicks is sure he’ll be on the field Sunday.

“It looked good. I feel good about it,” Nicks said. “We’ll see how I respond in the morning and then they’ll let me know.”

Hakeem Nicks on track to play

SAN FRANCISCO -- New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks made the team flight to San Francisco and is on track to play in his first game since Sept. 16.

Nicks has missed the last three games with either pain in his surgically repaired foot or swelling in his knee. But his knee made it through two consecutive limited practices and the Saturday walkthrough without any setbacks.

"I would like to see what the coaches are going to say about it in the morning [on Sunday] and what the trainers are going to say, but I think I've got a pretty good shot," Nicks said Friday in a statement released by the team.

"I practiced," Nicks added. "I did the majority of practice -- about four or five reps a period. About what I would normally do on a Friday practice. I did good. I had the coaches watching me, asking how I looked, was I compensating or anything like that. I wasn't. So I looked good. I feel good about it. We'll see how I respond in the morning and they'll let me know."

Nicks still could potentially be a game-time decision and may need to see how his knee feels after the cross-country flight and how it reacts on Sunday morning before the game. But the Giants likely will have their playmaking wideout back.

Nicks, tackle David Diehl (knee) and cornerback Corey Webster (hand/hamstring) were listed as questionable but they all made the trip.

That means Diehl could suit up for the first time since injuring his MCL on Sept. 16 against Tampa Bay. If Diehl is active, it is unclear what his role will be. He was the starting right tackle before his injury. The Giants have started Sean Locklear at right tackle and Will Beatty at left tackle with Diehl sidelined.

The only three Giants who did not make the trip are running back Andre Brown (concussion), defensive tackle Rocky Bernard (quad) and safety Kenny Phillips (knee).

Hakeem Nicks (knee) is a game-time decision, but he looks good and isn't favoring his foot or knee in warmups, according to Ralph Vacchiano.

Nicks' last game was a 199-yard explosion against the Bucs. He has 14 catches and 237 yards in his two games this season.

Fantasy Impact: Nicks is expected to play and owners should feel somewhat comfortable with trotting him out there. The Niners do have an unbelievably good front seven, but their safeties Dashon Goldson and Donte Whitner can be burned. Nicks will probably run more vertical routes with any concern for cutting on his balky knee.

Fantasy owners should put Nicks in their lineup, but check back to make sure he's a go. Rueben Randle would make for a useful spot-start should Nicks be a surprising inactive.

News: After missing the past three games with knee and foot issues, Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks is active for the Week 6 showdown at San Francisco. Nicks was listed as questionable on the team's injury report after being limited in practice last week. He has not played since Sept. 16 when the the fourth-year wideout tallied 199 yards on 10 catches.

Analysis: In seven games since the calendar flipped to the new year, Nicks has posted 47 receptions for 757 yards (108.1 yards per game) and six touchdowns. The 49ers are allowing an average of the fewest Fantasy points to opposing receivers this season (14.2), but Nicks is still considered a quality option in most formats for Week 6.
