Handcuffs (1 Viewer)

Are you a fan of handcuffs? Are you not a fan? Do you simply look at the players and add no value because you have "the other guy"?
I was recently baffled by a rejected dynasty offer. 12 team ppr 1QB
Guy has McCarthy, Purdy and Lawrence at QB. Andrews at TE and Etienne at RB.
I offered Isaiah Likely and Tank Bigsby for Lawrence and Brian Robinson.
In my mind, he was giving up virtually nothing and getting what could be valuable pieces, pretty cheap.
He rejected (that's fine, his prerogative) but his comment confused me.
I dont like to handcuff my own players with their backup (or starter)

Huh?

Basically he is saying he doesn't want to limit his upside. By taking your own handcuffs you are limiting your own upside because in most cases in order for the cuff to realize value the other player has to get hurt. So you have one spot on your roster that is not doing anything unless there is an injury. It's safer and a higher floor but it limits upside where you can get a different handcuff and if that starter gets hurt now you have your starter and the other starter for more upside.

For me, cuffs in general are dependent upon the talent of the handcuff. I won't take a handcuff of my guy just to protect him. I will do it if the cuff offers some level of upside. Charbs comes to mind as does Mason. There are a few others but not every situation has a cuff worth having.

As far as TE goes that's even a different monster. LIkely offers a lot of upside especially in dynasty so I don't see why he wouldn't want him. Next year maybe one of the two TE's goes on and now you have two upside TE's. Seems like a good gamble to me.

@Gally I think we all agree the deal should have been taken?
I understand limiting your upside, but if all things are equal, an injury to your guy can torpedo the season without the cuff.
In either scenario, an injury has to occur. I guess it all depends if you prefer to take risks or protect against them. I was just shocked someone had that mindset.

I get his handcuff statement sort of, that’s not a bad trade so he should have just done it. Last year I had a perfect handcuff set up and just couldnt drop them even when I had FA options that could have helped my crew. Hall/Allen, Robinson/Algier and to boot I had Charbonet on the bench too. It was so frustrating all year.

I usually grab other teams handcuffs and drop/keep etc.. as I play with my team. It is much easier dropping Algier or Allen for Guerendo etc… when you don’t have Bijan or Hall…. Kinda get it??

The mental aspect of this is so true. When it's your own cuff it is much harder letting go because if your own guy goes down you feel naked without the cuff when you had the cuff up until that point. Psycholigically it's hard to get past.
