Happy Christopher Columbus Day! (1 Viewer)

What was the book that I always wanted to read but found a little too daunting, a little too nonfiction? Guns, Germs, Steel. Basically espoused this theory.
Fantastic book and incredibly readable given how complex the topic is. It’s also a lot more than guns win, it’s about why Europeans had guns ( and germs and steel) in the first place. The answer is basically because it was overcrowded and full of conflict.

I would support changing it to Indigenous Peoples Day or an Italian more worthy of recognition- maybe Fermi or Sophia Loren

Serious question: why aren’t we the United States of Columbia?
Because Amerigo Vespucci (or his supporters) wrote exaggerated stories claiming that he made 4 trips to the New World and was the first explorer to set foot on the continent. (He probably only made 2-3 trips, and only came close to South America.)

Verspucci never even knew that the continents were named after him, as he died around the same time that the first map was printed.

There is a nice statue of Christopher in Bayfront Park, which no one had yet asked to be relocated, or replaced by a statue representing an indigenous person.

To celebrate Columbus' voyage, in Miami's Biscayne Bay is the Columbus Day regatta, which involves about 300 or so sailboats.

A more recent event is the Columbus Day Elliot Key party celebrated on keys and sand bars. It's a flotilla of power boats gathered at keys and sand bars where the main event is babes, drinks and water cannons. The debauchery has gotten out of control in recent years.

Thanks for the answers to my question- of course I knew about Amerigo, but I didn’t know why him and why not Columbus.

Something else I’ve always wondered about with regard to Amerigo: why are certain historical figures remembered by their first name? Amerigo, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Galileo, Napoleon, etc, while most historical figures  are like Columbus, remembered by their last name?

I am formally requesting that the City of Miami’s Park Department remove the state of Columbus from Bayfront Park and replace it with Chief Carlos of the Calusa. Please pass this along to Jose Gell.

Amerigo beat him to the punch when publishing his findings. Some say he's full of #### and made up 2 voyages.

He also got a country
And almost a handbag.
And a river.

And our original national anthem, "Hail, Columbia"

A sensible thing to do might be to retire this lame old holiday and dedicate a day for elections instead. We actually need balloting periods to be extended significantly to allow for the administrative tasks to perform but this would be a good start.

I think we need more holidays in general.  We work too hard.

I agree with the general sentiment that we Americans work too hard, or at least too much. I'd rather see that problem addressed through vacation days allowed and taken, though.

We've let the workaholics run things for too long.

During this morning's news conference with the president from Italy, Trump recognized the great Italian Christopher Columbus.Said he likes Columbus day.
