Don’t need a reason to feel that way, or visit family, or drinkThanksgiving really wants a word with you. Greatest day of the year. I personally feel a deep sense of gratitude on Memorial Day weekend, Veteran's Day, etc.
I've always felt that way too, but it seems most people do need a reason, and if collegial happiness depends on theirs, then it's a trade I'll make.Don’t need a reason to feel that way, or visit family, or drink
Heh. I love your I'm so-far-individualist-I'm-a-communal being ethos. Always dug it. Paradox is beautiful and truth, per Oscar Wilde. That's me all over
All the great philosophers were love-humanity-hate-humans types. Loving is still the best thing we do, no matter how much i hate all y'allHeh. I love your I'm so-far-individualist-I'm-a-communal being ethos. Always dug it. Paradox is beautiful and truth, per Oscar Wilde.
Anyway...
Fantastic book and incredibly readable given how complex the topic is. It’s also a lot more than guns win, it’s about why Europeans had guns ( and germs and steel) in the first place. The answer is basically because it was overcrowded and full of conflict. What was the book that I always wanted to read but found a little too daunting, a little too nonfiction? Guns, Germs, Steel. Basically espoused this theory.
lolI would support changing it to Indigenous Peoples Day or an Italian more worthy of recognition- maybe Fermi or Sophia Loren
Because Amerigo Vespucci (or his supporters) wrote exaggerated stories claiming that he made 4 trips to the New World and was the first explorer to set foot on the continent. (He probably only made 2-3 trips, and only came close to South America.)Serious question: why aren’t we the United States of Columbia?
LOL! Not bad, but llov80s Sophia Loren Day has my vote so far.I get a three day weekend to watch football, drink beer and play video games----could be Benito Mussolini day for all I care.
I am formally requesting that the City of Miami’s Park Department remove the state of Columbus from Bayfront Park and replace it with Chief Carlos of the Calusa. Please pass this along to Jose Gell. There is a nice statue of Christopher in Bayfront Park, which no one had yet asked to be relocated, or replaced by a statue representing an indigenous person.
To celebrate Columbus' voyage, in Miami's Biscayne Bay is the Columbus Day regatta, which involves about 300 or so sailboats.
A more recent event is the Columbus Day Elliot Key party celebrated on keys and sand bars. It's a flotilla of power boats gathered at keys and sand bars where the main event is babes, drinks and water cannons. The debauchery has gotten out of control in recent years.
It is not just about having a reason. It is about having the time set aside to do so.Don’t need a reason to feel that way, or visit family, or drink
Stunning. The first change I will make when we go with Sophia Loren Day is to move the holiday to a summer month. The ladies can wear their Sophia Dress and we can sit outside at our favorite, quaint sidewalk cafe sipping coffee.
Claudia Cardinale FTWI would support changing it to Indigenous Peoples Day or an Italian more worthy of recognition- maybe Fermi or Sophia Loren
And nation of ColombiaYeah, ol’ Vespucci got a couple continents named after him. But our boy Christopher J Columbus is honored by name as the capital city of 2 of the most prestigious states: South Carolina AND Ohio! Who’s who, em effers, who’s who?!?
He also got a countryYeah, ol’ Vespucci got a couple continents named after him. But our boy Christopher J Columbus is honored by name as the capital city of 2 of the most prestigious states: South Carolina AND Ohio! Who’s who, em effers, who’s who?!?

Amerigo beat him to the punch when publishing his findings. Some say he's full of #### and made up 2 voyages. Thanks for the answers to my question- of course I knew about Amerigo, but I didn’t know why him and why not Columbus.
It’s absolutely a great read. I’d almost say it should be required reading. What was the book that I always wanted to read but found a little too daunting, a little too nonfiction? Guns, Germs, Steel. Basically espoused this theory.
Why not just them their own day too? I am always up for another holiday.I would support changing it to Indigenous Peoples Day or an Italian more worthy of recognition- maybe Fermi or Sophia Loren

What an awesome song! It made me long for the old days of my peace pipe while I was listening to it.
Chef Boyardee.Yea. They should change that. Rally around a better Italian to celebrate their heritage. Columbus is not the right Italian for that.
I think we need more holidays in general. We work too hard.A sensible thing to do might be to retire this lame old holiday and dedicate a day for elections instead. We actually need balloting periods to be extended significantly to allow for the administrative tasks to perform but this would be a good start.
I agree with the general sentiment that we Americans work too hard, or at least too much. I'd rather see that problem addressed through vacation days allowed and taken, though.I think we need more holidays in general. We work too hard.
