His big day ends with questions about Branch

By DAN RALEY

P-I REPORTER

When his knee was under surgical repair last winter, the Seahawks went out and spent $49 million for another wide receiver.

While he was pushing the recovery process last week, his NFL team turned around and plopped down $39 million for yet another pass catcher.

On Sunday at Qwest Field, Darrell Jackson, the man with the vacant stare and extra-long goatee, looked neither gimpy nor outwardly happy after putting the Arizona Cardinals secondary on its heels early in the Seahawks' 21-10 victory.

The seven-year veteran from Florida was the first to make a big play, hauling in a 47-yard pass from Matt Hasselbeck on the game's third snap, but the last guy to walk out of the Seahawks' locker room, hounded by various questions about the newly acquired Deion Branch.

"Everything in this business is awkward," Jackson said of Seattle's sudden receiving corps of riches. "I can't worry about that. Whatever happens, happens. The opportunity presented itself. We're out here to win. We're not out here to take favors and sides."

Jackson, who didn't practice until the Monday before the season opener in Detroit, did all this while playing at a self-described "80 or 85 percent" capacity. Could he have been sending a message, that he's still the go-to guy in Seattle's passing attack?

"Darrell Jackson has a lot of pride and he's going to play well, no matter what," Seahawks center Robbie Tobeck said. "It shouldn't be some surprise. Over the years, he's been our guy. Why should that change?"

Hasselbeck, while welcoming Branch to the offense, was in no mood for diminishing Jackson's value or reclassifying his role.

"I think he's a No. 1 receiver," the quarterback said of Jackson. "Whoever says (he isn't) should put the film on. The guy gets open. The biggest issue with him is just having him out there, and having him healthy, and having him available for practice. ... If he's healthy, he's great. You saw how the Super Bowl started last year: They couldn't cover him, they really couldn't."

Jackson, whose corner dressing cubicle at Qwest Field is two slots away from Branch's, wasn't going to reach for any controversy tossed his direction involving his new, headline-grabbing teammate.

"It's not my job to worry about that," he said. "We've got a great bunch of guys. We get along. Everybody makes plays."

And Branch?

"He's cool, man," Jackson said. "I've watched a lot of film on him. He's got soft hands -- like me."

Branch wasn't activated for this game, but took part in early Seahawks warm-ups, simply to get acclimated to his new surroundings. He spent the rest of the game roaming the sideline in street clothes, asking questions.

Jackson first headed for the training room and didn't step into the shower until nearly all of his teammates had gone home. He was more weary than celebratory. Unlike Arizona, he knew what was coming when reporters crowded around him after he was fully dressed.

The expression on his face almost signaled a Seahawks loss, rather than good times. He handled each question, half about Branch, without changing his expression. It wasn't until the interviews were over that a slight smile creased as he made a parting and personal observation.

"If I was 100 percent, I'd probably be unstoppable," he joked.
Doesn't sound like he's too happy with all the Branch #1 talk and he had a statement game here.. lets hope it continues

I'd be fairly concerned about the salary cap ramifications of the Branch deal I were a Seahawks fan. Is Jackson a FA after this season? If so, it appears as though they are willing to let him leave.

Jackson won't finish the season. He has a degenerative knee issue. Branch will end up being the #1 sooner or later...just a matter of time.

Is it confirmed that he has a degenerative knee or is this just speculation?

We all have degenerative knees.
Is this still being regurgitated from that beatwriter's speculative blurb? If so, this is :11:
I read it on this site. Either way, with his injury history would you feel comfortable hanging your hat on the hopes of him carrying you deep into the playoffs? Honestly. He's right up there with D. Foster and Rex Grossman.

in the forums? that posted burb from the seattle beatwriter is about as speculative as it gets. also iirc, besides this knee injury, he's had a fairly healthy career.

I guess the Grossman and Foster comparison was a bit harsh. I'm just bitter since I've been burned by him.

This is fantastic. Dude averaged ~ a dozen FF points per game last year and now they've added motivation not once, but twice. Sweet!

He should be the #1. At best for Branch owners (like me) could hope for a Harrison/Wayne situation. In fact Koren Robinson and Darell Jackson were a potent duo at one point so I think the offense in SEA lends itself to that situationOr maybe I'm just reaching :) Either way, if DJax stays healthy he should be the #1 guy.

DJax on the field = :moneybag: Branch will NOT hurt his production whatsoever. When DJax turned into the player he is now he had a productive Koren Robinson on the other side.

I see this as an explosive offense, now, in a weak, weak defensive division, a Fitz/Boldin Lite type situation once Branch gets his bearings.

Roles Of WR D. Jackson, WR Engram, Unchanged

Associated Press, ESPN - [Full Article]

HC Mike Holmgren said WR Deion Branch will be added

to the roster to play against the Giants on Sunday. Holmgren is already calculating how Branch will divide plays at split end with WR Nate Burleson. WR Darrell Jackson and slot man WR Bobby Engram's roles will remain the same. So the men who will lose the most opportunities are Burleson and WR D.J. Hackett, who has been the fourth receiver in passing situations.

Anybody starting Branch this week?? I may hold him out this week vs NYG and next week vs CHI. After the bye in week 5 they play STL, MIN, KC, OAK, STL, SF, GB
