Since this place is swarming with political threads, I thought I'd see if they actually have any effect whatsoever.

I oringally voted to save the stranger, but our political threads destroyed my belief in humanity, so I changed my vote to the dog.

Wasn't planning on bothering to vote. I think people here have convinced me to at least show up and vote for Johnson.

yes and no

I've definitely become more convinced of my choice after reading the opposing arguments.

I was going to vote for Gary Johnson but after seeing the posters that endorse him, I've changed my mind.

Hasn't changed my vote yet but some of the discussions have softened my opinions on some things that it might change my vote in the future.

Off to vote today and encouraging others as well.

I can say I have enjoyed the political discussions here and every so often my mind is changed or at least bent on an issue. Anyway thanks to all for offering opposing and supporting viewpoints, always appreciated.

Our local paper did a great set of in-print Q&A's with every candidate for every local office. They were all asked the same questions and their responses were all printed verbatim. It really helped me weed out who know the current situations and issues, and who was just talking out their ###.

Then I went through all those who appeared to understand the issues, re-read all their responses, and that's how I decided who to vote for. Really, for local offices like the school board, it's hard to know much about someone without reading stuff like this. The series by the newspaper was a great help.

I would suggest that my vote for Gary Johnson in the last Presidential election was strongly influenced by an ongoing political discourse - can't say it was one thread.

Interestingly enough, going back a good number of years (like 10), I found myself becoming far more open to certain positions on the right and that probably contributed to my occasional pulling the R lever more than before as well, although the party has gone SO far off the rails and it's happened for so long now, that any chance for that shift to take hold has really been extinguished.

If anything, the boards have reinforced my former position in regard to usually voting Dem because, flat out, I fear losing freedom and liberty and having a far less equitable nation should we get a Supreme Court that is too strongly tied to the Republican party.

Is this similar to changing a vote due to solicitation materials? Either via mail or by volunteer solicitors, or advertisements?

And is causing you to vote AWAY from the solicitor a similar event?

Hate election solicitation materials and solicitors. Have voted away from candidate and party for these factors.

ETA: Is there a point to solicitation phone calls on the day of the election? Really, 5:00p on election day? Makes me want to change my vote.

I don't know if this counts as changing my mind on a person, but I changed my stance on abortion from a political thread. I kid you not.

It had to do with enforcement and miscarriages. I realized, due to an anonymous internet commenter, that I trust the machinations of government less these days and am unwilling to grant their agents investigatory power into matters so private and painful.

So for all the cynicism about political threads, they can change minds about issues that people tend to be pretty fixed about.
