HBO Hard Knocks 2022 - Detroit Lions (1 Viewer)

here's the play Deuce destroys Swift about

This is the counter they run all day long. the TE pulls and squares up - if D'Andre hits the intended hole hard instead of hesitating, huge gap. Instead he shuffles then bounces to the left. Gets positive yardage but could have had a chunk play if he trusts his blockers.

In the previews they showed Hank Fraley and his son (ball boy), think we'll see more the O line next week. Those guys are getting a 3-5 yard push every play. Top 3 offensive line in the league.

Just watched the first episode. Deuce Staleys shtick got old real fast, just shut up and coach. Overall great episode tho

Should be an interesting episode - 3 days of chippy joint practices with the Colts followed by their first win in preseason since 2018.

(I know, nobody cares about PS - it was still a dominant performance by their six backup offensive lineman and the backup D-line, as the Colts had only 30 yards rushing on 18 attempts. Young teams need to learn how to win and the Lions will have one of the youngest if not the youngest 53 man rosters.)

Yesterday MCDC held a coachless practice. They gave the players outlines on what to work on, and other than Campbell observing, the players ran the practice. But that's next weeks episode.

Not sold on Campbell being the right coach long term but he is definitely his own dog. Always entertaining.

One thing I've been enjoying about Hard Knocks the past few years is seeing former players like Duce, Aaron Glenn, etc operate as coaches when they used to just be names on my fantasy roster.

[Pompei] Dan Campbell on the perception that he is a “rah-rah” coach with limited strategic football knowledge: “It doesn’t bother me,” he says. “If you’re an opponent, the dumber you think I am, the better off we are.”

Sun Tzu Campbell

Duce has been the least impressive to me in terms of how this show portrays him. I'm wondering if the producers/lions pumped the breaks on the Duce/Swift exchanges for a reason. Duce came off sophomoric or even immature IMHO. Not a good look.

Yeah to me he's been a complete tool. Yelling at players about everything they do isn't good coaching. He wasn't even that great when he played, so I dont know why he thinks he's God gift to RB coaches.

Bruce Arians never played in the nfl. Neither did Pete Carroll or Kyle Shanahan or Andy Reid or the guy for the Rams. Has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Duce played for 10 years which is significantly longer than probably 95% of the backs in the league will make it. He was good.

Not sure what any of that has to do with him being a tool and acting like he was the best back to ever play, but OK.

Agree this was a great season. Agree with most of the consensus that Campbell was impressive and Duce wasn't. I also liked Hutch, St. Brown, Reynolds, and Rodrigo. There were a lot of great storylines.

This show was so good, I will root for the Lions as my secondary team this season because of this.

Also need to have talent to succeed. Would have helped if Lions had drafted Aaron Donald etc. over Ebron, Tavai, Jarrad Davis and that second round CB who ran 4.7 who Quinn talked himself into drafting.

I'm not saying that I disagree with Campbell needing to show acumen in sound coaching decisions and scheme, we have a limited sample and it still needs to be proven. But I like his aggressiveness, you will not see Cambell taking the wind in an overtime game. Campbell comes from the Sean Payton tree and there was an aggressiveness in New Orleans. Payton wasn't afraid to go for it on fourth down, use trick plays or start the second half with an onside kick. The Saints were consistent winners.

If Campbell has good coaches under him they can focus on the Xs and Os, what the Lions have needed is leadership and belief in the future (and some good luck). Campbell brings those things, do not know about the luck. Perhaps Hutch dropping to the second pick is a sign that things are turning.

Ditka wasn't a great coach but he brought fire and had a defensive coordinator who developed a championship defense.

I do not know if Campbell will succeed but he has brought hope and I will be very, very disappointed if he and Holmes fail.

I agree. Head coaches don't have to be great at Xs and Os if they've got a sound philosophy and good coordinators under them. That's why I get so sick about them pimping assistants for head coaching jobs every year. Being a great coordinator and a great head coach are two different things.

Who else are they going to pimp? The lunch lady?

Virtually every coordinator was a position coach at some point.

I guess I'm saying they pimp them because they're good at Xs and Os not because they would make a good head coach.
