HC Brian Daboll, NYG (1 Viewer)

I don't think he's nearly a bad a head coach as many think. In his first year with the Giants, he led an overachieving team to the playoffs with Jones having a career year. By and large, he has largely been saddled by a roster devoid of talent and poor draft choices (outside of Nabers). Last year the wheels came off with all the injuries, including Jones, and the talent gap is still there.

Where has Daboll been considered an idiot?

If anything he's a victim of his overachieving, he got a pulse out lame duck jones on his rookie deal, won a playoff game and thus got Jones extended.

Jones gets hurt last year and it cratered, not that things were going well before that, he's a one read nincompoop at QB who's only asset is running the all and his neck is a ticking time bomb.

Which is all to say, this has brought a worse record for Daboll but I don't see anyone saying he can't coach, but I'm sure he will go out with the wash when this team is ready to draft a QB

Not exactly a fair shake though, he should probably get a couple of years with his own QB, not one he inherited.

But he and Schoen could have NOT extended Jones and had his/their own quarterback right now. By extending Jones he became THEIR quarterback.

Being tied to Jones for 2 or 3 years isn't the worst thing, they didn't have a future QB on the roster, the available FA QBs weren't great, and after overachieving in 2022 they weren't in a position to draft one in the 2023 draft. I'm fairly certain that the Giants don't view Jones as a long-term solution at the position since Daboll seemed pretty intent on trying to move up for a QB. I am at like 99.9% sure that the Giants are drafting a QB this year, they have Jones bring him along in his rookie season and then cut bait with Jones.

In many of my circles, he and the Giants staff are roundly dismissed as laughing stocks.

Daboll remains on the hot seat:
  • 1-3 record
  • 29th in points per game
  • 25th in yards per play
  • 24th in turnovers per game
  • 24th in passing yards per attempt
  • 30th in rushing yards per attempt
  • 25th in expected points

The guy who should be on the hot seat is the guy ultimately signing off on these hiring decisions, but it doesn't work that way.

John Mara took over presidency in 2005 when Weillington passed.

Coughlin & Accorsi/Reese were already in place at that time, Coughlin was forced to resign in 2015 and Reese was fired 2017.

Is Mara going to fire yet another coach? That'd be 4 swings and misses in a relatively short period of time on his record. Be interesting to see how this plays out.

The Hard Knocks NYG season was hard to watch. Be it editing or just his demeanor, Daboll presented as extremely cocky and difficult to work with. That kind of stuff plays when you're winning, but it grows tiresome otherwise. I suspect he won't last through the 25 season with the Giants. Hopefully he'll get a good dose of humble pie and eventually return to a HC position with a new perspective.

Schoen, however, presented as a terrible GM. I expect there will be an entire front office staff come the end of this season.

I hate having to defend the giants in any way, but...

2022 his first year, he greatly over achieves, beats Kevin O'Connell in his building in a playoff game and loses to a much more talented Eagles team that went to the Super Bowl. They were using practice squad WR in these games. He wins NFL Coach of the Year.

2023, bad start, but then has to get six starts out of his second string QB and six more starts out of his third string QB. Who goes 3-3. I wish he was as much of an idiot as you and your circles suggest, Jayden Daniels would be a giant now without winning these pointless games.

2024, I don't love the demeanor coming out of the Dallas game I'd further point to the talent void at QB. And I'm not here to hear Drew Lock or Tommy Cutlets would have done any better. They lose a game late to Washington where they had no kicker and thats the difference in the score.

I think Daboll burning a timeout when Dallas had 2nd down & 3 with just over 3 minutes remaining in the game was a bad decision at the time and that ended up proving true. Should’ve let Dallas get that first down right away and save the two timeouts for closer to the 2 minute warning. It was just poor time management.

I don't fundamentally disagree with you, but as mentioned, there weren't exactly great alternatives out there that year and they didn't have good draft prospects based on picking back end of the first round. You had a franchise that hadn't won a playoff game in a decade and to let your first round QB walk off of that, I just don't know if thats reality in terms of selling that to your fanbase.

They were also in a window of Saquan being a viable piece for them. Just a bad spot all around, as it stands, his deal is relatively manageable and has a short window. Is far from the worst QB deal out there right now.

I think Hard Knocks maybe gave a wider scope of fans perspective on John Mara, he's a nepo baby dope who is probably too reactionary to things like talk radio and NYC tabloids. The only thing I'll give him is is heart I truly believe is in the right place. But his brains are in his back pocket.

But I think letting Jones walk without a backup plan was not really a plan. Daboll had Tyrod in Buffalo and liked him, there were rumors he was laying in wait in 2022 and Jones just over performed that season, in what's going to likely be his career year in a contract year.

I will say though, when Justin Fields was basically sitting out there free this offseason, I have no idea why they weren't in on him. I'll never forgive that.

And I should add, I think Daboll is a good coach and definitely not an idiot. Stuff like going over the top creatively to get Nabers the ball is right in line with how I see him.

Daboll isn’t an idiot, few are at this level but isn’t it a bit of a stretch to say he is a good coach?
