This. No need for a sandwich. Peanut butter on one side. Once caught, put trap in large garbage bag, they settle right down and drive at least five miles away and release. 

I've done dozens like this

Had unrelenting squirrels in an attic of a place I rented straight out of college.  First the landlord patched the fascia, but those squirrrls went ape#### trying to get back in.  

So our landlord ultimately trapped them, backed into the driveway to pick them up after we called him and did exactly as you described with the garbage bag over the cage.  The thing settled down just like you said...that is, until he put the opening to the garbage bag over the tailpipe of his truck.  Squirrel went bonkers for about 15 seconds and then silence.  I was like  .  If you're going to kill them, the gas chamber is probably as humane as it gets.
