Help me pick a new team (1 Viewer)

I'm almost 30 and have been a Bill's fan forever and now I give up. I don't live in Buffalo so I won't feel bad turing my back on them and none of my friends are Bills fans either. Just after their last showing in Toronto (where I live) I've decided I'm finished with them. They charged 3x as much for tickets here as opposed to Buffalo and play that kind of game??? 10 years of pathetic management and it's not getting better any time soon.

My question is, how do I pick a new team? I have a few things I'm looking for, but maybe some of you can help me out.

I'm looking for the following:

- history (maybe I should narrow it down to only teams with at least 1 Superbowl?)

- great all-time player I can have my kids look up to (I don't have any yet but soon)

- proximity (I live in Toronto and would like to be driving distance from my new team)

- stadium atmosphere (my wife's starting to get into the NFL and has never been to a game, I would want her to have a good time which is another reason I'm never going to the Ralph again)

- uniforms (they gotta look cool if I'm going to spend some $$$ on them)

- quality (I want a team I can root for now but I don't want to be known as a band wagen jumper)

Anybody else been through this before?

Any help would be awesome. Thanks.

I think that you should root for the Cowboys. I am a Bills fan and I go to 3-4 games a year. I agree that things are rough right now but I wasn't whining when they let me enjoy the four year ride that Kelly, Thomas, Smith, and Levy earned. I would love to see them win but I will not bail. Enjoy the Cowboys with all of the other former Bills, Lions, Jaguars, etc. fans. Just be sure to hide your new coat and hat when the Boys don't make the play-offs.

First, tickets should have cost triple if they sold out, since that's the price that demand could bear. If you didn't want to pay it, you shouldn't have. You best bet is to pick an NFC team to root for ALONG with the Bills.

-They will only play once every 4 years, unless you get lucky and they play in the Super Bowl.

-Limiting it to teams that have won a SuperBowl is eliminating the Browns, who have everything else you'd want - I don't know about atmosphere.

- If you pick a new team instead, you might as well pick the Cowboys, as others have said, once you're a jumper, you might as well be the worst kind of jumper. I'd recommend rooting for the Yankees, Lakers, & Red Wings as well - unless rooting for the Canadiens is seen as worse given your location.

Just let me add:1) Both SB history and pre-SB history. Bear toughness exemplifies what football is all about.

2) Walter Payton, nuff said

3) little bit of a drive, but doable.

4) Soldier Field rocks !

5) classic design

6) Bears can go up and down but their Defense is usually their pride. They are consistent performers and rarely have extended stretches of poor years.

Then again, maybe the Argonauts should be your choice :goodposting:

You have to reconsider!!! Look at these weak attempts to bring you in. The Bears, Pats, Falcons, Argos. You gotta' be kiddin' me. The Bills wear THE red, white, and blue. The colors that symbolize overcoming adversity and sticking to what you believe in.

:headbang: figured someone would take a shot at the Boys and their fans. bitterness from the SB spankings, maybe? i've been a Cowboys fans since i was old enough to watch football, and it aint easy, trust me. my point is, you cant just change teams, imo. trust me, theres been times when i wanted to "change" teams, but i cant. it's not acceptable. it's an unwritten rule in the unwirtten rule book of the sports fan. i believe there is a loop-hole for lions fans though. :lmao:

I think all Lions and Bengals fans should end their suffering and switch teams immediately. But Bills fans? Ehhh...I don't understand your thinking. I'm a Niners fan. Times are tough right now but San Francisco isn't an incompetent franchise of historic proportions so I'm sticking with them.

You should stand by your team unless you're a Lions or Bengals fan. Those two franchises have been pissing in the faces of their fans for so long I cannot understand how or why people still root for them. Bills are not that pathetic.

- quality (I want a team I can root for now but I don't want to be known as a band wagen jumper)
But you clearly are a bandwagon jumper. You're almost 30? That's not that old. You've seen your team go to 4 Super Bowls. As a Pats fan, I can tell you that putting up with all those losing seasons made the winning seasons all the sweeter.I'd advise you to stick it out with the Bills, but if you're intent on ditching them, take the blinders off, embrace your fan status as a bandwagon jumper, and just pull for whoever is winning.

I say root for the Lions. You will never be called out for being a banwagoner.

As far as finding a classy team. The Steelers have the best ownership and fan base IMHO.

I've been forced to watch Bills football for the last 9 years. They are starting to grow on me.

Don't be a wuss. Stick it out.

Also, the throw back helmets are sweet.

Umm...not if he was a Steeler or Colts fan. Just sayin'...

Doesn't that pretty much eliminate every team EXCEPT Buffalo?

You can take I75 to Detroit I believe!

We don't have any room on the Jaguars bandwagon. There was 13 of us prior to the season, but one has left to become a fan of another team. We decided to just cover up his seat on the bandwagon instead of going through the hassle of indoctrinating a new fan.

Good luck on your search though.

After hours of exhaustive research, correlating multiple factors from both your stated requirements and research into your background, childhood, personality and psychological profile I have concluded that you should definitely make your primary football rooting interest The New York Sharks

Being a fan isn't like a marriage. It's more like that pain in the butt screw-up brother that just can't get out of his own way, and makes life worse for all who are part of his family. There is no divorce. There are no annulments. Only death can end the relationship. Sure, you can ignore him, pretend he isn't your brother, refuse to lend him any more money... but he is still your brother.

You might think you can stop being a Bills fan, but it's only denial. Once you settle in (and I was both a Jets and Giants fan as a kid) you are stuck. It's set in stone. It's too late.

A Jets fan.

What is so bad about being a 30 year old Bill's fan? You've seen your team go to 4 superbowls and are a 47 yard field goal away from having watched them win one. That's more than most teams get.

Look at the team now. It has a bunch of young talent. Get a decent coach along with another couple good drafts and that team is firmly in the hunt again. You switch now and I guarantee you'll be kicking yourself when you watch them in the playoffs within the next few years.

If you must find someone else to cheer for, then I echo others in this thread in saying choose an NFC team as a "second" favorite. It isn't nearly as big of a sin as outright giving up on your team and you'll allow yourself a transition phase. If you like the NFC team better than the Bills then you can become more of a fan of theirs and drop the Bills later.

if you want a NFC team - Packers or Bears (stay away from my Lions)

I don't think you can just up and choose a team, it's something that comes naturally (see above)

:kicksrock: This is the law. If you break the law, you are a communist. Or a woman. Do not break the law.

To the OP. Drop the criteria that the team has to be within driving distance and there are many more possibilities. You are 30 now and soon you'll be in your prime "earning years" and you'll be able to at least make a once a year trip to see your new team wherever they might play. If you go with an AFC team you can always catch them at the Ralph from time to time. Would you rather 2-3 road trips down the QEW every year or say a week/weekend in San Diego in November/December?

We'll really miss Steve. Pass the hot chocolate Brownstone.

Do you guys still drive the sweet pickles bus?Bengals fan since birth. Mike brown sucks. Chris perry has a mangina. When they finally win the big one it will be really sweet in about 30-40 years on my death bed.

Steve lasted as long as he could.

You can't just pick a team.

Just start watching more games, coverage, and read everything you can. In a year or so you may find yourself rooting for one team more than another. If you were ever a real fan though you will just gravitate back to the Bills.

If that doesn't work out, I hear the Argonauts are pretty good.

You heard wrong... personally I don't know how one can be a fan of a Buffalo based team and live in Toronto to begin with.To which someone could also reply "I don't know how one can be a fan of a Buffalo based team and live in Toronto to begin with." FTFY

To which I would reply

fwiw, I've adopted Indy as my favorite but still don't leave out the Bengals. I've been a Bengals fan ever since I watched football, and then when I moved down to Miami, I had to find another team to compete w/ my step-dads Dolphins, so Indy it was. I've since adopted Arizona, mostly due to my man crush on Fitzzzz!

Two things:

Enjoy your Bills and grow a pair.

We don't want any more fairweather fans.

Signed,

Jerry Jones.

Clearly it needs to be the Argonauts.

Back when I lived in Shreveport, they had a CFL franchise (Shreveport Pirates). I followed them for as long as I lived in Shreveport. I still watched the NFL, but the Pirates were my team. Once i moved back to Omaha (no NFL or CFL team) I started following the Rams because i was originally from St Louis and I was already a fan of the Blues and the Cardinals. It just made sense to follow the football team too.

So you don't really have a favorite team, is what you're saying?
