Help Me Structure a Winning Trade (1 Viewer)

I just traded Adrian Gonzalez for Dan Haren. I know some (many) may not like that trade, but I was and am desperate for pitching help.

I offered a trade this morning that was rejected, but the GM said he wanted Casey Blake or Ryan Zimmerman. I don't know if I want to deal either given that I just parted with Gonzalez, but I thought I'd post both rosters and standing to see if I can get some advice for structuring a trade that he's likely to accept but that will help my team.

He's in a 3-way battle for first, and I am in 5th.

He is dominating pitching--leading K, W, ERA and WHIP. He's last in saves. In hitting, he's 4th in R, 5th in HR, 6th in RBI, 9th in SB and 6th in SB.

In pitching, I am last in W, ERA and WHIP. I am 6th in saves and 8th in K. In hitting, I am leading R, HR, RBI and AVG. I am 5th in SB.

I will post some of the trades he's offered and rejected to me.

I offered hawkins for Wolf. He rejected and countered with Marquis or Weaver for hawkins--May 14.

I offered Gonzalez and Hawkins for Sanata--He countered with Cueto for Gonzalez or Josh Johnson For Howard. May 29

I offered him Blake and Pelfrey for Josh Johnson. June 2

I offered him Hawkins for Hanson and he countered with Hanson for Hawkins and Madson. June 9.

I offered him Hawkins, Madson and Macdougal for Wolf + his 2 drops. Today.

I'd offer MacDougal and Hawkins for Hanson. What's Lidge's timetable for return?
Lots of uncertainty re: Lidge. Here's the latest from rotowire:
There was also talk of Lidge having another MRI but Ciccotti said that was unnecessary. Lidge hopes that a two-week absence will be adequate to lessen the inflammation in his knee. "The goal is going to be pretty close to 15 days," he said. "There are days when I feel better than other days. . . . It's painful for a little bit, then it gets better."

No way in hell is Lidge going to be back in the closing role after 15 days on the DL, no way.

This morning, he said I'd been sending him lowball offers--you can see the offers I sent him, and admitedly, not all are great but I don't think they're lowball.

I sent him Hawkins and MacDougal for Hanson.

He came back with Wolf for Blake.

Who would you be using to replace Blake?

Available on the WW are guys like Carlos Ruiz, Jason Kendall, Bill Hall, Nick Hundley, Khalil Greene, Augie Ojeda etc. Cameron Maybin is also available but it's unclear if/when he'll be promoted.Available pitchers are guys like Chris Sampson, Russ Ortiz, Dan Meyer, Charlie Morton (to the Pirates from Atlanta in the trade a couple weeks ago).Thanks.

Thinking about countering with Blake for Wolf and Hanson or Blake and Madson for Cueto.

Thoughts?

You really need to take a hard look at the standings. You're 6th in saves, but depending on how MacDougal works out and how long Madson gets to close you could make up ground in that cat really fast. If you're not too far out of say 3rd, I wouldnt trade away any saves. Another category its often easy to make up ground is steals. If you can find a way to make up 2 or 3 spots there, then you've gained 5 points without trading with this guy that obviously highly values pitching.

Then you need to take a good look at your staff. Haren and Vazquez are two great anchors - just having Haren for 4 months should net you a few points in the general pitching categories. To this point in the season, Maholm has a staggering home/road split and I'd stick to only spot starts until that normalizes a bit. Hawkins is about to lose his save opps, but he has been providing good stats otherwise. Bastardo is only a matchups type pitcher and I especially wouldn't start him at home anytime soon. Pelfrey is also a pitcher with stark home/road splits and some signs he might improve his K rate, but until he does there is no reason to take a risk starting him on the road. Perez is a nice source of Ks, but his ERA and WHIP are a bit too high to hang onto and he's got no shot at closing this year - whereas Tony Pena has somewhat similar numbers plus there are whispers about Qualls needing a DL stint. Marshall is fairly worthless if he's not starting. If you make selective starts of the starting pitchers and stream guys for favorable matchups, you should start to gain some points in pitching. Just remember, if your offense continues to dominate you only need a mediocre pitching staff to contend for first.

Seeing as you just traded away Gonzalez, I wouldn't trade any more power if it can be helped. And I wouldn't do those deals you're talking about for Hanson, he's just got too much risk.

Thanks. I am going to pick up and stash Gaby Sanchez. They're saying he's going to get called up.
