Help me win a Best Bottle (wine) party (1 Viewer)

think I'd focus less on winning and more on getting hammered for closer to $30 than $50.
Didn't take long to come up with this.

Go the cheapest route possible, and cover up the label.

Hilarity ensues if you actually win.

Drunk cheap ensues no matter what.

Great suggestions everybody - thanks. Will also wait to hear from Quint and hit up the local wine shop for advice.

ok. did a cursory search of Denver area wine shops, sadly their websites don't show much in the way of inventory.

with the goal of winning this thing, and with the understanding that pleasing the masses is probably the way to go, i recommend choosing a wine that is fruit-driven, low(er) tannin profile (think "less dry"), and medium body. i have no idea what kind of inventory your local wine shop(s) may have, so i won't include vintages (though anything from CA that says 2013, 2014, 2015 is going to be strong). with that in mind, here are a few suggestions you might find in the local wine shop

- Ridge Vineyards Zinfandel (any bottling) @$29.00 - $38.00
- Bedrock Wine Co. Sonoma Valley Zinfandel (good call @Snickers)
- Rombauer Zinfandel @$30.00
- Seghesio Zinfandel (any bottling) @@30.00 - $45.00
- Turley Zinfandel (any bottling) @$50.00

- Orin Swift "Abstract" Rhone Blend @$30.00
- Tablas Creek "Cotes de Tablas" Rhone Blend @$45.00
- Conundrum CA Red Blend @$22.00
- Banshee "Moredcai" Red Blend @$22.00
- Sean Thackery "Pleiades XXV Old Vines" Red Blend @$25.00

of the wines listed above, i'd say the Rombauer Zin is probably my favorite for this event. it's a big wine: with high ABV, low tannin, and a touch of RS. a fruit-bomb if there ever was one. it should be a hit with this crowd if you can source it. the Conundrum also fits that profile. i left out The Prisoner and MEOMI because they were mentioned previously, and i'm guessing someone else will probably bring a bottle since they're really popular.

i purposely excluded Pinot Noir from the list (can be too light bodied for some RED WINE DRINKERS), and Cabernet Sauvignon (young Cab can be too tannic for people "who don't like dry wine"), and Merlot because....well....it's Merlot.

if you absolutely must have CA Cab Sauvignon, let me know and i can throw out some ideas, or check up-thread since some good ones were referenced there.

good luck and drink well.

Sequoia Grove Cab, Turley Zin (altas peak if you can find it), St Supery Elu (you will win just based on how cool the bottles are and it is good wine), Law or Saxum Syrah (you will blow you budget but who cares).

Great stuff, Quint.

Thanks to everyone! I'll report back, hopefully drunk as ****.

Also to appeal to the masses, I would stay away from specific vineyard or estate wines. They will have more unique flavors from the local soils that may turnoff some.  That's why I like them. Getting a wine from a region, like Napa valley, Alexander Valley, Sonoma coast, etc...will be a blend of grapes from various vineyards in the region and while you can still have good wine, the unique flavors are softened and not so pronounced.

Due to kids, honey-dos, etc., wasn't able to put much shopping time into this like I wanted. Went to a wine store  i trusted, had the wine specialist help me out.

Full disclosure - of all the wines listed in this thread, they did have a 2015 Rombauer Zin. It was down to that or a 2014 One Time Spaceman, a blend from Spaceman vineyards in Paso Robles. On his recommendation, I went with the Spaceman as it was one more year in the bottle.  It was a close call.

During the blind taste test, I fell in love with one bottle. I'm not an oenophile, so my description is deep, rich, fruit up front with the smoothest of finishes. Like drinking velvet. Many people at the party apparently loved it. It was my Spaceman.

But I still came in 2nd place. To a ******* bottle of Dreaming Tree.

At any rate, I discovered a great new wine that I would highly recommend. And I've also got the names of a few more in this thread that I want to try out. Thanks everyone!

good for you.

a blind tasting is [almost] the best way to evaluate wine, as all the pretense is stripped away and you're left to your own senses. at a party like you described, all the better.

keep tasting!

So you asked for wine advice here, got many suggestions, then went in a different direction and then didn't win? Typical FFA thread. ;)
