Help Settling an Argument (1 Viewer)

I run a formula one forum, and several of the guys enjoy talking NFL football as well.

There has been an ongoing argument about what timeframe teams should be referred to in.

A gentleman there with a penchant for never admitting he's wrong calls the bears championship team of 85-86 the 85-86 bears.

Several people have chimed in and said no, they are referred to as the 85 bears, and even provided him with the reasoning (the regular season is generally over before the turn of the year). I agree with, and am one of those people.

Tell me I'm wrong if I'm wrong, but I've never heard them referred to as the 85-86 bears.

Thanks!

If more than a third of the REGULAR season is in both years, it is N/N+1 year team.

Otherwise, it is the year of the regular season.

Baseball and football - last year was the '05 champions.

Basketball and hockey - '05/'06.

thanks guys, keep em comin', i'm gonna show this thread to him. although he still won't admit he's wrong.

85 Bears, for sure. Another example is Miami's perfect season. Everyone knows it was the 1972 Dolphins, but the Super Bowl was 1/14/73.

For more help with your argument, go to NFL.com. Click on stats and you'll see the playoffs and Super Bowl XL under '2005 postseason.'

People will argue about anything on msg boards. It's pretty sad if you ask me. And it is 85 bears for the record.

I wonder if the Texas Longhorns were the 05-06 National Champions?

The answer is too easy, although I do see his logic. (wrong as it is)

As the forem moderator you should take this opportunity to just tell him he is wrong and that you will make the final call. This is a good chance to shut this one nagging nellie down early in the year or else you can expect him to argue now stop about ever single issue

BTW 85 Bears

hahah, this guy has no respect for me man. and he can never be shut down short of a ban, and i'm not going to do that just because he makes me mad. i'm angry, not a nazi.

Let's be practical. The point of language is communication. As long as the meaning and intent you wanted get across clearly then it really doesn't matter how you say it.

Since 99.9% of the world will understand both to mean the same Bears team, both are fine.

GregR is right from a linguistic standpoint. You know what he is saying, and he knows what he is saying. The fact that it is now an "arguement" is the problem.

Pasquino says: "If more than a third of the REGULAR season is in both years, it is N/N+1 year team."

Who came up with that rule? I'd rather just call them the 85-86 Bears just so we knew exactly which team is being talked about then get out a pencil and paper and start working fractions out, even though fractions are our friends.
