Hester locked up for four more years (1 Viewer)

I'm not sure I like this deal. These super return guys like Dante Hall, Jermaine Lewis, and Eddie Drummond don't stay on top for long. Maybe Devin Hester will be the first to buck the trend.

Here's the story about it on ESPN: Hester gets paid

I am a bit torn by this deal. I guess for what Hester does in the return game and the way he impacts field position for the Bears, I could justify paying him $7.5 million per year, and if he does produce at a #1 WR level, he would get an additional $10 million, which would make this deal 4 years and $40 million - not unreasonable for a top KR/PR and #1 WR. However, he better not go the way of Hall, Drummond etc. as mentioned by The Man with the Plan, and instead continue to be the devastating force he's been. Otherwise, that's a ton to pay for a very good special teams player. On another note, it is strange to see the Bears open up the vault as they have in the last few weeks. As a long time Bears fan, it is somewhat disorienting.

I like the deal simply because he is the best offensive threat the bears have. this comes from someone who does not like the bears, but it is still a good deal, its only 4 years im sure he is worth it. but you are right young players come in the league and are the dominant returners.

Which itself is funny and sad at the same time.lmao @ CHI. They WAY overpaid for a return guy.
:thumbdown:We havent even seen the details of the contract, no way to tell if they "WAY overpaid".If that $15 mil guaranteed figure includes the deflating roster bonus due in 2013, Hester didnt really get much at all...since the agent is likely the one that leaked the figures, we don't know what he really "got"

I get the nagging feeling Hester is going to be used on offense much more this year. This contract just cements my belief. Outside of Booker, there is nothing. No way Brandon Lloyd holds onto #2, Mark Bradley isn't healthy once again, Earl Bennett is a rookie, and Rashied Davis is a good slot receiver. Hester looks like a bonafide sleeper with tons of upside the more I think about it

One clarification: Hester has been extended by 4 years. He had 2 years remaining on his rookie contract, so this new contract is for 6 years through the 2013 (2008/09/10/11/12/13) season. Considering it has escalators based on receptions, yardage, TDs etc as a WR, this seems fair for someone who will be the best returner ever when it is all said and done and has shown flashes of being a deadly WR talent (see TDs against Saints last year for eg)

That actually isn't fixed. You just bolded and responded with one example even though MWTP acknowledged that there were a few. As to D. Hester, I think BOP plays and short routes with big YAR will be his forte. He may very well pay off for those who gambled on him with a late round pick.

The Bears are hoping that Devin Hester can become the next Steve Smith. Smith made the pro-bowl as a returner in his rookie season and has since become one of the best wide receivers in the game.

Tim Brown and Derrick Mason are a couple of other guys who went from being good return guys to being good wide receivers one of whom is likely going to the Hall-of-Fame.

One major difference is those 3 guys not only played WR in college but excelled at it. Hester caught about 10 passes in his entire college career.

Check the average starting field position for the Bears over the past two seasons. In terms of pure value, I'd only place a handful of players above him.
