Hicks v. Robinson (1 Viewer)

I am a strong believer that Frank Gore will not prove to be durable as the feature back in the SF offense. Therefore, I'd like to play opportunist and grab the next most likely feature back on the roster, but I don't know who it is. It appeared at first to be Hicks, who performed adequately last year. Then another thread talks of Robinson being elevated to RB2 on the depth chart - leapfrogging Hicks in the process.

Do any of you have any insight you'd care to share? Which one of these guys has the skill set to be SF's feature back when Gore goes down? In dynasty, do either of these guys have value in the long term or will SF simply draft someone if Gore proves unreliable?

Don't forget about Terry Jackson

In all honesty though, I think Hicks will be the primary backup

Robinson may be used occassionally as a 'change of pace' back or for a trick play

Jackson may be used sparingly to give Gore or Hicks a breather

Hicks is 28 yrs old and 200 lbs, Robinson 23 and 227, and with loads of raw ability. I think Robinson becomes the #2, but it's hard to say how soon that happens. He's just learning the RB position at this level while Hicks has been productive and the 49ers know what they can expect when he's in there.

If Gore were to go down in week one, best guess is Hicks would start. He's #2 for now, but I think Robinson overtakes him in 2007 and maybe even sometime this year if he earns the team's trust. He doesn't have their trust yet (not just running the ball, but blocking / blitz pickup as well).

--- The guys behind Gore figured prominently in the decision to let Barlow go. “Frank is fully healthy now and he’s had a very strong showing for us so far,” Niners coach Mike Nolan said Sunday. “Maurice Hicks is another back for us that we have a lot of confidence in, and Michael Robinson is doing an outstanding job, and Terry Jackson is still in the fold. I’d like to use all of our backs. We have a lot of different type schemes and personnel groups that we use, and I would think we would use our other backs as well to keep them all fresh. We do feel good about this stable of backs and we’ll use them all. They all have some value to us. And not just if someone goes down, but in each game all of them have good value to us.”

i think hicks has always done well when give the opportunity

This reads like RRBC.

I'd go with Robinson. Hicks has never been more than mediocre, whereas Robinson is a versatile player with a greater upside.

From yesterday's interview with Mike Nolan.....

Nolan said Hicks is the better runner at this point and Robinson has more advanced skills as a blocker and receiver. Nolan said he could envision them as a platoon if the need arose during the season.

"They complement each other well, but they're distinctly different players," Nolan said.

"From the standpoint of picking the hole, going north and south with not much decision, I would give that edge to Mo," Nolan said, referring to Hicks. "Michael has got more of a third-down capacity. He's made progress with his running. We've got to feed him the ball, get him comfortable with playing running back. Michael is a good player. It's just how good can we get Michael to be."

Looks like Hick's may be the man if Gore's health remains a problem.
