Hiking (1 Viewer)

we had a bigger hike planned for Tuesday but it was over 30C so decided to do a hike that put us in the trees
did 10km on teapot hill in Chilliwack bc in the cultlus lake provincial park

not a difficult hike but a good work out , lots of ups and down so got a really decent cardio
since its called teapot hill , people hide teapots along the last part of the upward trail to the look out .
nice distraction to keep your mind off the climb

IG pics from hikes and travels
Great pics.

Always good to see the thread on the first page, I love checking out the pics.  I've been traveling too much for work to get in any trips including time on trails, but do have 100 miles through the San Gabriels in So Cal coming up in 15 days.

But I'm lucky to live in beautiful Marin, with plenty of incredible trails nearby.  I also adopted a husky mix pup a few months ago, and he's not up to running much with me yet but I do take him out on hikes once or twice a week.

A few recent pics (each link has a few pics):

The Marin Headlands two weeks ago

My pup Summit on the summit of my local hill, Mt. Burdell

Trip up to Mt. Tam East Peak

Some gnarly trails up in Napa on and around Mt. St. Helena
How are you getting these photos from Instgram onto here?

Is it a copy/paste? If so how do you rename the links?

I feel so stupid not knowing this.  :bag:

And nice pictures!!!

We had some monsoon storms over night here which gave us a beautiful sunrise. This was a short 4 mile hike done this morning just outside of Saguaro National Park West.

I have heard good things about that part of BC. Great summer weather, big deep lakes.

There’s a great place called Lake Chelan that’s in Eastern Washington that we go to pretty much every year.

Talking to my Canadian friends they said Kamloops / Kelowna are like that lake but there’s a bunch of them. Will make it up there at some point.

Kelowna is nicer then Kamloops imho
I wouldn't live there as I don't want to shovel snow ever again
both have a ton of lakes around them
with the weather pattern changing , they are more affected by forest fires now
I haven't done any hiking in washingston state yet but I do have a short hike planned there in 2 weeks
if you make it up here , gimme a shout for beers

Will do. Where’s the hike in Washington?

Oyster Dome Trail is a 7.9 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Burlington, Washington that features a river and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from May until August.

Oyster Dome is a wonderful trail.  If you're doing the 7.9 mile one, you are starting at the Chuckanut Drive location, which is definitely the better hike.  And right now, the only one because the other trailhead is closed for logging (or at least was in the last week or so).  Here's a pic I took while sitting at the top last spring.  Have a great day!

yeah , I read another description about the trail and it said it had some amazing views
looking forward to it now and thanks for the heads up about the other trailhead

Summer sounds great but winter not so much. I was just thinking that I have not seen a true snowy freeze your ### off winter since I moved from New England in 1989. I am good with that.

a follow up on this about forest fires
they are getting worse in BC
779 fires to date this year
110 currently
none around Kamloops at this time
4 south of Kelowna

Yup. We have had fires nearby on every trip to Chelan for the past 3 years.

Last year the smoke and ash from fires were in Seattle for about a week.

the smoke wasn't in the coquihalla or manning park on my last couple of hikes and no smoke in Vancouver yet
august last year we had health advisories in lower mainland  due to the smoke

2 hikes done and 1 canceled

last Tuesday
Poland lake in manning park bc = 19km , 430 elevation gain -- wasn't a great hike , we mostly followed a dirt road , not that scenic , lots of mosquitos . a hike that I might do once every 2-3 years

Friday we were suppose to snowcap trail in manning park but it was canceled due to the heat wave . was 30-40c in lower mainland and the interior

yesterday did my 1st hike in the states
yellow aster butte in the northern cascades in Washington state , 6.8 miles , 2522 elevation gain . we got almost perfect conditions . was in the low 20s , little clouds , not too many bugs and very little haze or smoke to view the mountain tops

so far nothing joined for this weekend as its a long weekend up here and that means the trails will be jammed with people so not worth the hassle

the hike was amazing , the road was in pretty good shape. they must of filled in the holes and graded it recently .
im pretty sure the lady that organizes our hike will have more baker hikes planned for late august and September

I have really been itching to get out there. Unfortunately I do believe I have hit the age where I can no longer safely go out hiking in this heat. I used to do it but when I try now I just don't feel good. It has been hovering in the 110 area here.

This past weekend there was an insane amount of people rescued from seven falls I am sure there is currently no water there.

Hopefully it will cool down here soon and I can get out there. Otherwise I may have to bite the bullet and drive to the mountains to get my fix.

Royal Arch is probably my favorite hike in Boulder.  Only 3 miles but pretty steep so a good climb will take you quite a bit more time than a normal 3 miles because you climb 1000 ft/mile.  Has a pretty arch at the top.  So based on your wants that's my suggestion.

RMNP is only about 1.5 hours from Boulder.  If you get up early (won't find parking much after 730 or so on a weekend maybe 8 or so on a weekday.  Then I'd suggest Lake of Glass and Sky Pond that hike IMO is world class.  About 10 miles and if you're not used to the elevation will probably take 6 or more hours.  It's worth it though.
Just recently did sky pond as my first real hike. It was pretty tough but totally awesome!

to me , its more about my enjoyment level . I think I could hike in temperatures over 30c but its not worth it but you are probably right about the safety on a hike in that type of heat

Staying in downtown Seattle this week.  Any suggestions for nearby hikes?  I don't have a car.
Not out in the mountains or anything but you could Uber to one of these that are all within probably 20 minutes of downtown:

Discovery Park it's right on Puget Sound. There's light trails all through there. Then walk over to the Ballard Locks (think tiny Panama Canal) there's a pathway across them and go into Ballard which has tons of cool spots to eat and have drinks.

Greenlake has a 3 mile trail around a nice lake. Not hard and not in the woods or anything but it's a nice setting. Head up to Phinney Ridge or Wallingford for dinner drinks.

The Washington Park Arboretum has some areas to walking around in. Then go to Madison Park or Capitol Hill for drinks

I got out on Friday. Hot hot hot I got lost and did not bring enough water. Ended up climbing down some rock walls to get to a wash that I knew would lead me out.It got a little scary for a bit. I probably should not be doing this #### by myself but I did. Here are some pics from Saguaro desert hike  Saguaro desert park west

Heading to Portland in October.  Lots still closed in the gorge from the fire.  What are some nice waterfall hikes still available that we could do with a 2 and 4 year old?

Link still isn't working for me...?

I visited Lake Chelan (Manson) a 8 years ago, it was a very enjoyable vacation, no smoke at the time. Great place to take the family.

Stehekin is on the bucket list.

Stehekin is one of the most special places I've ever visited.  Do it!

Any of you hikers use Alltrails or a similar app? Anything worthwhile?
Alltrails is great, it is probably the most widely used app so there is tons of current information as far as conditions (burns/snow/bushwacking/etc).

Hiking Project, by REI I believe, has some trails you may not find on Alltrails

Trail Run Project is a similar app by REI

Peakbagger is awesome if you are anywhere near mountains. It has about every peak in each county listed, most include trip reports. Cool app to have out west, when you can identify the individual peaks on the horizon it really "shrinks the world" if that makes any sense.

HikeArizona is the best app you will find for anything in AZ, and a decent app for NM and UT. The android app is called Route Scout. It is not very UI friendly, takes some getting used to.

Honorable mentions:

Gaia

Guthooks (only if you are looking to hike on a long trail, AT, CDT, CT, AZT, PCT, etc) paid app

Paging @urbanhack.  (Speaking of which, when are we hiking together GB?)
@FreeBaGeL

My recommendation is to head out on 84 and then old scenic 30 along the gorge for 10 miles or so.  You'll hit Latourell Falls first is an easy one for kids.  I believe Multnomah falls is open at least the lower portion, that is the big daddy.   From here, you'll drive by a few more.  If you have the time, keep on heading east on 84 out to Hood River and have lunch there.

Edit to add that when you get off 84 and make your way to old 30, the first place you'll hit is the Vista House.  It's a historic monument/building that sits up high right at the beginning of the gorge.  Great stop for the kids, bathroom break and pictures.

Sky Pond is one of my favorite all time hikes, my family likes to do a RMNP trip every 5 years or so.  Get some great looks when people see my 75+ year old dad scrambling up those last parts.  One of the pictures I took up there is the lock screen on my phone, one of the best pictures I ever took.  I have a real camera now so interested to see what I can get next time I make it up there.

its been really smoky up here so a few of my hikes have been cancelled
ive only done 2 recently

did a 10km hike near squamish bc , a trail up the mountain that lead to the brohm lake loop
12km chain/bagley lakes loop on mt baker -- we got lucky that the smoke wasn't too bad and got ok views

I was suppose to hike lake ann trail  on baker tmrw but it has been cancelled

Went for a nice hike in the Sawtooth Range last weekend.  Observation Peak is a bit of a slog and has seen a lot of fire in the last 3 years, but it's a technically simple route and offers great views.  Camping at Redfish Lake is a nice bonus.  From Stanley Lake trailhead, rode bikes in 5 miles, then hiked up another 4 miles, and back.

Sawtooths

Saw three desert deer that I spooked this morning. Was nice seeing them run on this rocky terrain.  They stopped once they got a bit away from me and just stared with a WTF look on their faces. A rattlesnake returned the favor and scared the #### out of me. I have come across rattlers a few times but the adrenaline dump and scare is always the same. Just crazy heart pounding when you hear that rattle and see the snake with very little time to react.

We have had some recent monsoon action here which has had the wildflowers blooming.

Hopefully here are some pictures. This is Wasson Peak trail in the Tucson Mountains.

Wasson Peak trail

Did Teton Crest Trail in July and Chilkoot Trail in August.  A lot of fun.  Teton Crest has beautiful views and I'm not normally that excited by alpine stuff since we have so much in Colorado.  I'd recommend tetons and permits aren't too hard to get in January.  Chilkoot was fun for the history.  And beautiful when we saw the sun.

hiked mt frosty in manning park bc yesterday

it was my longest hike and most elevation
ive been working on my stamina and trying to get to 20 k hikes so been doing 16-18 km
got invited to go on the hike but had no idea about and you can guess on what happened
8 1/2 hrs of hiking but 10 hrs on the trail
24 km 1200 m elevation

my knees were killing me and weak on the last 3 km

not a bad year for me.

three days/ two nights on the Olympic coast past Rialto

‘three days/two nights in the south fork of the hoh

went up colonel bob on the west side of the olympics

ozette loop

three days/two nights cascade pass to stehekin and back

carbon glacier day hike -meant to go to Yellowstone cliffs, but got started late (this is an ongoing problem)

baker river/sulphide creek day hike

necklace valley day hike

five days in glacier peak wilderness- with a loop in on PCT, followed by a traverse of lime ridge.  Last day/night were unplanned, due to route finding complications.

day drip to orcas with tromp around Moran park- great one for out of town guests who aren’t up for big mts

loop hike around skyline mt at Stevens pass

quick day hike to swim at lake lichtenwasser

Any recommendations for Glacier National Park?  Will be heading there in a few weeks with wife and kids (12 and 6).

Highline trail is awesome. There's a short spur overlooking the Grinell glacier that almost led my wife to divorce me on the spot - I don't recommend it in the snow. Iceberg lake is shorter and less strenuous, but still pretty nice.

Heading to Denver tomorrow morning for a conference. I have some time between when my flight gets in (9:30a) and when I have to be at the first event (6p cocktail reception) so I wanted to get a couple hours of hiking in if possible. The place I am staying is between the airport and Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Preserve but was thinking about getting a car and head towards Boulder.  Do I have enough time to do that and still get a 3-hour hike in?
