Saying you, or someone else is not a hipster. And how you fit into some different subset of hip people. It's a classic example. Not sure why you don't just embrace the label?
The reason no one else on the board is a fan is because Nightmare of You doesn't particularly care for hipsters as evidenced by their lyrics:Start a band, throw a brickYou lazy hipsters make me sickDon't clap your hands, don't start to danceDon't let them know that you're a fanAnd as far as liking suggestions for bands I've never heard of... I am not opposed to it at all when I end up liking the music. It's just that has never happened with a band that people consider 'hip' with me.You turned me on to Nightmare of You, who I really like, but I'm pretty sure that nobody else on this board is a fan of them.![]()

Why would you dodge them? Punch them in the face..'urbanhack said:just dodged about 4 hipsters while getting my iced americano with soy.
IMO the true hipster is in the heart of the bicycle crowd. they don't own cars, they ride bikes. they don't give a #### what they look like, yet they do. they also stink.I am not sure what the true definition of a "Hipster" is, but I think its just someone who is int tune to what is perceived as cool by there own generation and ususally bte the ages of 20 and 40. I like them. I like cool people.
WTF?I saw one of these at my church on Sunday. They are a rare breed round these parts, but this cat had a full beard, was wearing crimson red pants and a grey wool sweater. It got over 100 degrees that day. You have to admire that sort of dedication.
What's funny is I firmly believe the NBA dress code policy in 2005 is a major reason for this shift. Obviously, rappers like Pharell and Kanye took it to the extreme which where most of the younger generation takes their style cues from, but the NBA dress code really was the catalyst. Bye bye Allen Iverson and hello Amare. It isn't just the hipster scene. I work at a rather very multi-racial working class high school and in the last 2 years the fashion has shifted from gangsta look to 80 skater new wave look. I am not just talking white kids either. It is a big trend among the black youth in Detroit-that and the super preppy look. Here in Brooklyn the hipster style is becoming distinctly 80's, which is confusing because a lot of them are old enough to remember the 80's which weren't cool the first time around. I think the 80s style started in a younger demographic and is slowly spreading.
I think the key to hipster style is accessories as opposed to a mindset: glasses, ironic mustaches, fixed gear bikes, shabby hats and ridiculously expensive vintage jeans that originally sold for $15.
If you want to fit in all you really need to do is show up everywhere on your fixed-gear bike. Riding a Vespa is almost as good.

I don't know why you've never heard of them? I swear I've posted about them many many times. But as GPJ points out, I had very few takers. Thank you for listening. I think they are great so i figured the anti hipster lyrics were the only cause. But I still think it was a bad career choice for them. When is the last time a Manhattan / Long Island band that denounced hipsters got popular?
As long as you don't dress like offdee.Doesn't nearly everyone have some sort of style?Anybody over 30 who tries to portray a distinct style is kind of a joke, IMHO.I'd rather have slight sense of style than walk around with dockers and tucked in golf shirt after 35.
I figured hipsters wouldn't really care about that. Hate that ####### band, and they're from Portland. It's taken me a long time to come to terms with hipsters, as I live in Hipster capital in SE Portland. Ugh, it's all I can do not to get into a fracas at a show as they're chatting away, and an amazing band is playing their heart out.If you would like to see an excellent video to learn about hipsters. Check out the video for 'Bohemian Like You' by the Dandy Warhols. The lyrics explain things pretty well.
