If these kickers tried to hit the uprights, I doubt they could do it very often. yet week after week, it seems to get hit. Is there any way to find out what percentage hits the uprights each year?

5 points should be awarded for hitting uprights. Go for the safe 3, or go for the risky 5. Would give teams more options when playing from behind in the 4th quarter.

Is the ball immediately dead when it hits it from a FG? (I'm assuming it is, but can it be returned?)
