My wife picked up a whole peck of these things. I thought they were just local. Damn, they good.
I rotate between Braeburn, Fuji, and Gala depending on which is the crispest. I will eat Red Delicious in the fall only because that's the only time they are nice and crisp.Ibraeburn apples. They are sweet with a touch of tart...YUMMY!!!
I can't find any this year down in the Dirty South.
Best evah....Most expensive too, but so worth it....
A week ago both crisper drawers of our downstairs fridge were filled with these things. I wasnt sure we'd get through them all before they went bad. Now half are gone and Im thinking we better grab another peck while they're still available at the local orchard. How does $25/peck compare to supermarket prices?Brought home a couple bags of the Honeycrisps from the trip this weekend. The taste of these apples is amazing. Can't wait for the wife to make a pie from them.If you like apples and have never tried the Honeycrisps, you're missing out.
I think that's about the going rate now from the orchards. Not sure about the supremarkets. I just started getting them this week in the Houston area. I think they go for $1.99/lb here... whatever that equates to in pecks...I can't find any this year down in the Dirty South.![]()
Can't Fro's sell Honeycrisp apple pie?????If Fro's sold apples, they would only sell Honeycrisp. They're that good.
<_< my favorite apple. Lately it seems harder to find a good one though.Ibraeburn apples. They are sweet with a touch of tart...YUMMY!!!
My grandpa was a farmer and had apple orchards and was one of the apple testers for the U of M back in the 30's and 40's. They would send him twigs to graft onto his existing apple trees. The samples didn't have names just code numbers. Supposedly he got a sample that ended up growing apples the size of a cantelope.
UPDATE FOR TWIN CITIES RESIDENTS:Sale going on right now at Super Targets. I just picked up a dozen of these and just had an orgasm in my mouth!

Really? I'd venture to say you got a bad one then. I literally just had one too from the clearance section from a ghetto Target and the texture was outstanding.I literally just finished one of these bad boys. It was kinda meh. Wasn't very crisp, though maybe I got an old one? The flavor I can see being appealing.
It may have been old. Or perhaps you get different quality from different locations. All of the ones I've enjoyed this fall have been ridiculously crispy and juicy. :holds one up to screen: Did your's look like this?I literally just finished one of these bad boys. It was kinda meh. Wasn't very crisp, though maybe I got an old one? The flavor I can see being appealing.
I don't think I've ever had a honeycrisp before, but it's gonna be tough to beat the Macoun, IMO.
yeah that's definitely not right... the good ones look almost laminated/fakeI'll be sure to seek this type out tomorrow when I get my apple-a-day. I really think I did get a bad one, it was sorta mushy to the touch.
It had to have been bad - an apple should never feel mushy.I'll be sure to seek this type out tomorrow when I get my apple-a-day. I really think I did get a bad one, it was sorta mushy to the touch.
We planted three honeycrisp trees in our back yard last year. How do you like them apples? I wish I did like them apples, but them apples didn't really grow yet as the trees are still pretty damn small. Gonna be a few years before I can like them apples. :sigh:We had to plant some other apple trees too. Not sure why. Something about cross pollenating. Sounds fishy to me. Tree wife swapping or something. I'm against it.Seems like somebody would have done the "Good Will Hunting" thing in this thread by now.
Was it an Asian Pear? They aren't soft, though. But the taste is fantastic. I only see them at the supermarket a few times a year. They're great for cooking with, too.I'm not an apple fan, but I saw these in store the other day and bought one based on the recommendations in this thread. Wow was I surprised! Made other apples seem like the crap they truly are.
Also ran across a pear listed as "the sweetest and juiciest pear of them all." Unfortunately I forgot the name of it, but it was the best I've ever had. Even topped the honeycrisp, which is amazing.
I have one on my desk right now. Last one.bought some for $2.99/pound this weekend. they were the crispiest apples I've ever had.
