After Ollie’s second free throw, am I crazy or does Hackman's reaction kind of mimic the arc/bounce of the shot with his movement and the way his hand touches his face?

i’ve mentioned this before, but barbara hershey essentially wrecked arguably the greatest film basketball and baseball players of all time? chitwood and hobbs.

also, how awful of a coach was norman dale? he designs the final play with chitwood as a decoy, when the guy missed 3 shots the entire movie.

being from a small town in Indiana that actually won the state championship (1984)when everyone was still one division...it's pretty great and will always be a special film.
A few guys from our high school tried out and won parts in the movie...include Rade Bucher. (my sister dated him - lol)

Gene Hackman is/was on record as telling others in the film how ridiculous it was and he thought it might be a career killer for him
Obviously the movie ended up being an iconic film that pulls a pretty wide audience in to watch
Personally I almost fell asleep watching that opening and I didn't know people drank coffee in paper cups driving around 1951 Indiana, they didn't even have Mr Coffee machines yet, the Bunn you associate with coffee shops/cafes doesn't come out until 1957, where did he find coffee?
The music in that opening makes the movie seem like it wants you to know you are watching a serious movie, won't be many jokes watching Indiana in 1951
That said, I liked the movie when I saw it in '86, I was 12 years old.
"What a matter with YOU?!"
-and he says I'll make it but the really cool part of that scene is how Hackman transforms in that moment and shows you he believes in his team and is willing to go all the way with them
He doesn't even blink when he says "alright" and changes the play on a dime to go thru Jimmy Buckets
It's a great film for what it is but a 3-4 minute opening of just driving thru Indiana with heavy dramatic music is at the least dated and seems a little off

Every frame of that movie is awesome - except for the Hackman/Hershey kiss.

She does some outstanding work in the Last Temptation as Mary Magdalene, early career she is in Boxcar Bertha, both films directed by Scorsesehee hee, hershey kiss!Every frame of that movie is awesome - except for the Hackman/Hershey kiss.
Hershey also appears in another great sports film "The Natural" where she plays opposite Redford and almost kills him early in the film

This. Absolutely iconic.
I spend a good amount of time driving on roads like that while in the Heartland for work, and I worked on a historic rehab of an old school that looks almost the exact same as the one they depict here.
One of my favorite movies of all time and will probably be one of the last things I want to see (along with my kids) when my time comes.

I have a similar story. Went to a small school in rural Indiana. We didn’t win the state championship but did advance to the semi-state and played it at Butler/Hinkle Fieldhouse.
So yeah the opening credits and lots of other parts of the movie are great to me.

I have always loved the movie and always loved the idea of one divison championship. I have spent my life as a small town teacher/coach and have been fortunate enough to have coached in many state playoff basketball games... including four Final 4's with a state runner up and two 3rd place finishes. We unfortunately never won it all.

Brown County High School in Nashville Indiana. Had to beat some “big” city teams from Columbus and Bloomington to get to Hinkle. Lost to an Indianapolis team in the morning game of the semi-state.
