House of the dragon. Game on! (1 Viewer)

Some spoilers in this post: https://georgerrmartin.com/notablog/2024/09/04/beware-the-butterflies/

Safe to say, GRRM is not a fan of where HotD is going.
I'm not persuaded these changes are a big deal.

I'm getting an error message and don't see the post. Did he take it down or maybe its a problem on my end?
Appears to have been taken down. Try this: https://www.reddit.com/r/freefolk/s/AXYFCbWiZr

I made it through season 2. It had a few moments, the CGI dragons are great (as long as they're not trying to show people mount/dismount, then it looks like the Sims). Overall it's overly bleak, depressing, and lacking in dynamic/engaging characters. This collection of mumbling, petulant, droopy mopes make Jon Snuh look like prime Diamond David Lee Roth. The line that stood out to me the most from the whole season was when the barfly lowborn dragon rider recruit guy tells everyone they need better senses of humor. I don't know if that was a tongue in cheek dig at critics who've levied that charge at these writers, or they just happened to put that in, but it's definitely good advice for whoever writes the next season. Also too much of the tension is based on 3's Company style miscommunication and offscreen/unheard exchanges.

You'd have thought Martin would learn not to just hand random writers and show runners outlines for stories and think they'd do a good job constructing an entertaining and coherent show from it. But here we are.

And to think, he spent all that time writing a flowery retort about a show that he sold off a long time ago rather than actually finishing his ****ing next book. And people wonder why I hate...
I don't disagree.

With Fire and Blood, he actually did finish, and the showrunners are still messing with it.

I think reading between the lines here you could come to the conclusion that his relationship with the television production people is completely broken. He essentially accuses them of being dishonest with him and then says, "there are larger and more toxic butterflies to come." This isn't the first I've heard of this. Unbelievable since he's been through this process before and still finds himself in a position where he's complaining about the interpretation of his work -- because, there's an easy solution to that particular problem if it were important to him.

Also, for anyone who is not familiar with the story - there significant spoilers in his post so don't open if you want to stay in the dark as to some major plot lines.

I'd like to think that if I were a George RR Martin or Stephen King, I'd just be happy that I created something that people enjoy. Failing that, I would seek consolation from the giant pile of money upon which I sleep every night. I would not publicly ***** about how the people who are popularizing my work are getting it wrong.

Finally got around to watching this. Kept my interest enough but pretty meh overall.

Every scene with Ulf was horrible. He's like the Jar Jar of Westeros.

You're doing better than me. Haven't made it past episode 6 or 7 and that was a few months ago. More interested in The Penguin at the moment.

Id like to open by saying Game of Thrones is arguably my favorite TV series of all time. Such a wonderful storyline with an epic journey of character development. Loved it. Yep, the finale was horribly unsatisfying, but nonetheless epic show. 1st season of House of Dragon was kinda disappointing the 1st time I watch it. How can you follow Game of Thrones? I rewatched season 1 and it was much better then the first time I watched. I'm 5 episodes into season 2 and sadly it's been very stale for me. Episode 4 was clearly the best of the season so far. The rest of them have been a sleepy watch for me. Imo
