House of the dragon. Game on! (1 Viewer)

I was unsure what I was watching when Daemon was signing to his dragon... anyone else follow the importance of that or is it something expected to be explained later?

Not his dragon. It was his father's dragon (the king before Viserys) who has been riderless in the years since his death. 2nd biggest in the game, so Daemon is trying to get it on their side (although they'll obviously need someone to ride it)

After seeing what the BIG dragon did last night, I wouldn't be super confident if I'm Daemon (while his dragon is obviously bigger than his stepson's was.....that long skinny neck aint gonna hold up that well in a fight)

You mean his nephew?

Actually GREAT-nephew.

Meh on the childbirth complaints. A guy gets the top of his head lopped off.....a baby drops out on the floor. A littls surprised they didn't have a warning/disclaimer. I wouldn't be surprised if she can't have children anymore thus moving her battlefield from the birthing bed to the actual battlefield.

Not sure why it’s hard to get that one actually was part of the story and the other had no real meaning. Rhaenyra was already in the don’t want to go scorched earth side and the only change was after learning her son was murdered by Aemond. We’ve seen a lot of child birth and that one was completely gratuitous. Heck, we’ve even seen Rhaenyra have a child before and had to get up and do her duty right after.

No one is saying ew, I couldn’t handle it at all. We’ve seen penises cut off before. Some of us are saying it had nothing to do with a story line and others are saying we’ve seen it happen a dozen times now. Theon losing his penis was integral to the story so no one complained. This wasn’t.

Corlys' wife forgot to mention that his brother also called the Princess a whore. It wasn't just the "*******" comment.

I don't see a difference between lopping a guy's skull in half and showing a stillbirth in terms of either being necessary or unnecessary gratuitous gore. Both events are part of the story; in neither case was it necessary to show the viewer the gory details. Rhaenyra losing her child is as much a part of the story as an anonymous guy being eaten alive by crabs. That whole scene with Daemon running the show in the war room while she was in childbirth was tense and awesome - her oldest son trying to act as her rep and being completely ignored. We didn't need a lingering shot of Corlys' brother's half-head on the floor either, but they showed us that as well. GOT had multiple scenes of children being raped, beaten and killed. I think some viewers don't like the stillbirth scene because we're completely used to seeing depictions of gory violence but much less used to seeing depictions of this type of non-violent gore.

We’ll just have to disagree on what is part of a story line versus was is shown on the show. I wasn’t squeamish at all but we’ve posted multiple times in this thread about how much screen time births have gotten. Almost a running joke, so one so graphic and not important to any arc in the show, is just gratuitous.

The childbirth scenes aren't pleasant obviously, but I don't mind them. I think they help establish that life isn't all peaches and cream for the female characters in this world. Maybe they're not getting chomped by dragons, but life is plenty dark for them too, and they rightly feel like they have skin in this game.

Imagine how differently we would view these characters if all we ever saw was them sitting around the court in pretty dresses.

I would have liked the finale to be a little longer (maybe 1.5 hours) and go into how the other brother's visit went with his dragon. Did he encounter another "greenie" on his visit?

Also, can someone explain the scene with Daemon and the dragon where he was singing. What dragon was that? Where was he?
Sure, Daemon had a speech earlier about dragons and how that will win the war. He mentioned the ones on Driftmark (like Laenor’s) and maybe 3 wild ones on Dragonstone. He was going into the dragon pit to “talk” to one of the wild ones, obviously a pretty big one.

They did seem to make Aemond’s dragon even bigger than I thought it was. Would be interesting if it wasn’t really correct. It seemed like the entire dragon into the big dragon’s mouth.

Arrax was struggling to stay aloft in the storm as Aemond mounted Vhagar and went after Luke. Arrax was younger and swifter, and on a calm day might have been able to outfly his pursuer, but the weather impeded him, and Vhagar was five times the size of her foe and the hardened survivor of a hundred battles. The two dragons met above Shipbreaker Bay. According to Archmaester Gyldayn, if there was a fight it could not have lasted long. Arrax fell, broken, to be swallowed by the storm-lashed waters of the bay. His head and neck washed up beneath the cliffs below Storm's End three days later. Prince Lucerys's body was never found.
Thanks. From that scene she didn’t look 5 times as big. Just her head seemed 5 times as big when she cut Arrax to pieces in one bite.
When it flew over the Prince and his dragon it looked five times as big for sure.

I meant she looked way bigger than 5 times. Reminded me of the giant bad dragon in the train your dragon movie when it bit Arrax. It was a one bite and done. Maybe tip to tail 5 times but weight wise and 100 times.

Exactly, seemed like the scale was off when I read 5 times bigger.

Aemond's dragon is one of the original 3 that conquered Westeros. So over 100 years old and battle tested.

What’s the lifespan of these dragons?

I wonder if some of these houses already figured out that all you need is an Olympic javelin thrower (or javelin throwing machine) to take one down (ala Night King in the future years).
Night King

Loved the finale. Actually the last three episodes of the season hooked me when I was just about to give up. It’s not GoT level or anything, but I now actually care about the characters and am looking forward to seeing what happens next.

Somebody mentioned upthread about having a thing for Princess Rhaenys. I do to and was happy to learn that the actress who plays her is actually younger than me. Phew!

I get Jamie Lee Curtis vibes from her

Why did Daemon choke Rhaenyra. I know it was something to do with The Song of Ice and Fire but can someone spell this out for me?

I must be watching a different show than the rest of you. Then again I’m not a professional critic and just an average viewer who enjoys good television. I can’t wait for the next season.
Same here….absolutely loved season 1. Just outstanding premium television.

She goaded him by basically telling him his brother trusted her with the dream/story and not him. I’d sense it to be frustration of kind of always been labeled as a hot head who no one trusted with real stuff. Remember when his brother sent help for the crab guy? He got so pissed he decided to get it done himself. Rhaenyra kind of shut him down at the battle planning table and that final piece sent him over the edge. Luckily for her he calmed down.

Don’t love the way the show writers are making Rhaenyra such a sympathetic character to make this a good v evil story. Same with Alicent, Daemon and others. This narrative that Aemond didn’t mean to kill Luc but just lost control of his dragon? It’s like they think they need to soften all the hard edges on these characters to make them likeable.
They both lost control. Luc told Arrax to not attack but it happens anyway. Aemond said similar to Vhagar.
I thought the finale was good but definitely not great. It was kind of obvious something was going to happen to Lord Strong as he was scared to go and Rhaenyra telegraphed the no fighting.

I will say that I don’t think Aemond felt bad about killing his cousin. I think he realized that he started the war and gave Rhaenyra’s side ammo to say they are evil usurpers.

Overall, good season but I could go the rest of this series without another childbirth scene. It’s just gratuitous at this point and didn’t have anything to do with anything. Her son getting killed was the turning point. The stillborn had 0 consequence. She was already in the I don’t want to kill everyone mode before that.
I read a few different things about the still born was part of the sacrifice that allowed Deamon to calm and bring Vermithor onboard so to speak. Also, could be blood magic as there are whispers that is how some Targs have such strong connection to their dragons vs others.

I've read this explanation, but it misses me. She did not goad Daemon pre-choke. It was only after the choke she made a quip to the extent of "He never told you?" in surprise.

So now you still have no chance but at least you aren't pining over a cougar?

I think in the last episode (or maybe the one before) someone said the Sea Snakes fever had broken.

I don’t think that’s the case. I am fairly certain that was the cause. I don’t recall her saying something afterwards, but I am pretty sure she said something like that first.

We know he's a really bad, violent person with almost no redeeming qualities; and yeah, he murdered his first wife in cold blood, but I STILL think this was bizarrely our of character for Daemon. It was also out of character for her - she doesn't need any convincing to go down this path to war. I think the show writers have generally done a great job, but there are a few scenes like this one that are just head-scratchers for me.

I don't know. He pretty clearly wants to be in charge and thought he was until she put him in his place.

Got it, but I think the theory still stands. Rhaenyra says that after as confirmation. Her saying that was her saying you choked me because he never told you. Of course on top of all the built up frustrations. If that was the first straw no reaction like that but the last straw reaction.

Right. The show runner confirms this in that interview linked above.

Back a few episodes when Corly's brother got whacked and they named Luc the heir to Driftmark, Corlys was laid up with a bad fever and they were very unsure if he would survive. So getting an heir put in place in case he didn't make it. Then it was quiet for an episode or two, and now at the start of the finale someone mentioned his fever had broken and he would be traveling back to Driftmark from the Stepstones. We knew he was alive the whole time, it was just that he went from being expected to die to him pulling through.

Yeah, I mean I'd buy he choked her because he was frustrated being challenged, with Rhaenyra's consideration of peace as a option, with possibly a far fetched rationale for her position, any of that I get w/r/t a volatile character in Daemon. I just don't agree he was goaded by Rhaenyra over the fact she knew something he didn't. She did not even realize that at that point.
