House of the dragon. Game on! (2 Viewers)

That's fine for some characters, but not all of them. We have to be emotionally drawn to characters, good and bad, and so far HotD is not executing on that for some of us.

As I mentioned before, I'm rewatching GoT at the same time and within the first few episodes they established characters that you either love (Ned, Tyrion, King Robert) or hate (the Lanisters not named Tyrion). It makes the interactions much more compelling.
Completely agree. In GoT's it hurt when those characters died, and we cheered when the evil characters got theirs. At this point in HotD, I could care less who lives or dies.
So you're saying you care to some degree...

I see your point and agree GOT had some purely good characters and purely evil characters. If the characters don't interest you than that's definitely an issue and I wouldn't blame you for bailing. However I don't think the good/evil dynamic is required for a show to be good and I don't expect this show to follow the same formula as GOT. In fact I hope it doesn't.

One of the main things liked about GOT was the messiness and little details that made it seem like a real place. So far HOD has pulled me in that way. Rooting for "good" characters like Jon Snow doesn't do it for me.

There is no "evil" here as they both will have semi-legitimate claims.

I'm enjoying the show, but not this thread. This thread makes me not enjoy the show because many pick it apart too much. I need to learn to stay out of this thread.
Me too. I am enjoying the show too. Its not peak GoT but its still pretty good. Much better than that LotR show.
I agreed with you after 2 episodes. But I am starting to lean to LotR's after last nights show.
Haven’t watched last night, but damn it’s amazing how much people are trying to dislike LotR’s. It’s so weird IMHO that people can’t like both. Facebook and Twitter have really done their job to keep people engaged by making everything an either or situation. I can’t tell you how many tweets I see about the Celtics coach or Brett Favre. I like sci-fi and fantasy so damn it, I’m going to enjoy the **** about of both and hope that they stay good for years. After GOT ended (kind of roughly) and The Expanse ended, been a dry spell.

It doesn't have to be 'evil', but I need to have some feelings one way or another towards a character. I'm not sure if it's the writing, or the actors, but the show is starting to fail for me.
I’m still enjoying the show, but I get this point. I liked Rhaenyra and her buddy but damn the uncle sex scene and his blurting put a damper on it. Joffrey was one of the best characters in GOT and he was evil and you hated him. This is definitely more gray and you don’t have your favorites.

Right, it’s less about good/evil and more about having some compelling/interesting characters, which is where this show is struggling a little bit with me.

A gray character in GoT's was The Hound. But because of the great writing, character development, awesome lines, and really impressive acting, you really start to appreciate him.
So far HotD has lacked this, but I am still hopeful.

We didn't know how GoT was going to end so the characters mattered more. Anyone paying a modicum of attention to GoT knows a bit about how this ends. So we just have to hope to enjoy the ride.

Yeah, I'm enjoying the show well enough. I never got too into the weeds with GoT lore/ history so I genuinely don't know where things are headed like some of you.

I was wary of the time jump but they pulled it off. By the end of the episode I'm on board. Only thing that keeps bugging me is how could Cristen Cole just murder the (at the time) future Prince's bestie/secret lover and just get away with it with no retribution. In this world it makes no sense.

The prince can't really stick up for a secret gay lover, now can he? But the queen can pardon Cole... and now he's on her team.

Not openly no, but he's in a position of power and you'd think he could pretty easily dispose of Cole in Flea Bottom with his body dumped in the Narrow Sea.

I generally like this and it’s interesting. But it also is pretty boring. Nothing really has happened— just kind of repeating itself. We are introduced to a character and then they die and/or age 10 years in an episode. So we don’t care about them at all. I don’t hate it but maybe the material didn’t really lend itself to being a tv show and they should have made something else.

I still enjoy it but it really is a lot of setup when it’s terribly obvious what we’ve been building up towards. I did some wiki reading just because I wanted to get a feel for how long it will last. There were so many names and marriages that I honestly got lost so I think I’ll still be surprised but it feels like there will always be build up. Reminded me of that 24 show where every time they solved an issue there was the next emergency but you knew it would end in 24 hours.

I think we all knew it wouldn’t be the same amazingness as GOT (before the end), but it has dragged a lot. We’ve seen three births in 6 episodes. At least we’ve met our Dahmer although I’m struggling with why they couldn’t open the door from either side.

Kinda where I am although I don't hate it as much as some in this thread (not you Leroy). It just seems kinda boring and with everyone have about 14 kids now, the line of succession is so blurred I have no idea how it will be resolved unless they dracaris a whole ****load of them. It also doesn't help all the names seem to run together for me. I'm old & feeble and struggle to keep the key players names straight, add in the thundering herd of child seemingly popping out every 15 minutes and I'm thoroughly confused.

Agree. I turned episode 6 off before it was through, there’s no character development different actors. This show just isn’t interesting to me.

I paused last nights episode at least six times, for me and Mrs Brat to talk out through wtf was happening and who[tf] these new character's were. I think I need a white board in my living room.

This show reminds me of a baseball game with a runner on first and a terrified pitcher. You think he’s going to throw and then checks on first again. He gonna…nope, steps off the rubber. Finally the whole crowd is telling him to get on with it and throw the darn ball.

I had hoped the wedding was more of a turning point to get on with it, but the jump ahead necessitated a slow down to redevelop the same characters like the aforementioned pitcher stepping off the rubber.

Daemon was the one character who had started to develop and instead they neuter him and have him whine into his wine. Rhaenyra reminds me of a where are they now Teen Mom episode years later. Alicent seems oblivious but scheming and I wish they’d just make her fully aware than the “who me” angle they seem to have.

We’ll keep watching, but they really need to get on with it. Enough setup, start to push the power control boundaries and let’s see some surprising out of nowhere deaths that’ll turn presumption on its head.

Agreed with my pretty much everyone here. Just nothing really interesting going on here.

I've had one major event spoiled for me via accidental internet surfing (although I'm pretty sure 90% of the viewership can see it coming a mile away, especially after the events of last night) and another MAJOR event (maybe the most major event that will happen) was already revealed during a scene in GOT's........so I know where the show is going.

The king is gonna die...and then things are gonna happen. But right now I dont have anyone to root for or care about. New Rhaenyra is beaten down after 10 years of popping out kids and having a gossip fight with her former best friend (women....right?) and the other presumed "contender" is a weasly looking teenager who enjoys bullying his brother, beating up on his pre-pubescent nephews and wanking it for the whole world to see until his mom walks in on him.

Not exactly a showdown I'm looking forward to.

I have really enjoyed the series so far. I understand the need for time jumps and how the new actors were necessary. We are seeing a divided house now which will lead to drama when the king passes. Lars killing his own dad and brother was wild.

I really don’t see how new actors were necessary. You could have hired older actors to make them look young or the ones they did and then make them look older. The whole show is sort of a train wreck unfortunately and I was looking forward to it. But this is worse than anything that was in GOT.

I need to rewatch the ending. A lot going on. Did Larys do that so Alicent's father would be brought back to be hand?
Why did he cut the tongues out of the prisoners?
What was the bug pin that they showed on one of the soldiers?

The action is going to pick up, but it is going to be confusing as well I think.

Bring back Otto, and now he is also the Lord of Harrenhall.

Cut out tongues, so nobody could talk and say who hired them.

Not sure about the bug -- was that also on Larys cane??

Believe you are right about the bug, especially since they made sure everyone saw it clearly when you was recruiting in the dungeons.

You're correct about the other points as well but I thought those were pretty straight forward.

Are we certain that the Dad also died?

Lars cut the tongues off the prisoners so that they would not be able to later rat him out as the guy who had them burn the castle. He is trying to help Alicent by both getting a new hand that is not partial to the princess (perhaps queen's Dad) and also hurt the princess by killing the father of her kids. Not sure about the bug pin.

So true. I read a wiki page on Alicent and I can honestly say that I have no clue who wins or loses and which family they are from because the names run together and they reuse the names. You’d think I’d have spoiled the show but I’m really more confused.

I still like the show, but it's like they're trying to squeeze 10 seasons into 1 season with all the time jumps.

Yeah. Any time a character gets interesting it is like they are putting on a red shirt for an away mission.

@beer 30 Here’s one that you’ll enjoy. There was one name that appeared 5 or 6 different ways in different opposing families. Felt like the author was just ****ing with me or he slipped in a Laurel and Hardy skit. Aegon’s first base. You told me Aegon’s second base. Right. Well who’s on third? Aegon.

I thought that I was just more tired than usual when I turned it on because I kept nodding off.
But it looks like I wasn't alone - it was just a boring and confusing episode.

I don't think it's boring as much as it is dense and hard to follow. A lot is happening and it is probably a show that would benefit from rewatching earlier foreshadowing. Similar to Dark or S1 of Westworld

I think a rewatch would require that the show was entertaining the first time around. I will watch this show because of GoT's, but I could not imagine rewatching any episode.
