Houston Texans forever - And our BBQ is better too (7 Viewers)

Will Anderson (chest) didn't practice today, but Wilson didn't hear anything that made it sound like a cause for alarm.

Texans coach DeMeco Ryans announced Friday that quarterback C.J. Stroud has cleared the concussion protocol and will start Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts.

The Texans also will have their high-paid safety Jalen Pitre back, who missed three games with a concussion.

and on a opposing QB note, Daniel Jones has a fractured fibula. Sure Will and Danielle are licking their chops as it should affect his mobility.

Jags move into first in the AFC South, via tiebreak against the Colts. Record vs common opponents I believe, as division record is the same.

Houston a game back, but with more division wins in their wallet (4-1, while Colts and Jags are both 2-1 and still play each other twice). Colts come to Houston the final week of the season.

I think we want a Colts win next week as they and Jags play. If so, we control our own destiny, can win the division if we run the table. Hopefully Colts and Jags split their two coming games.

Go Steelers!

We want them to win the AFC North (so it would be the Ravens potentially vying with us for a wildcard since we own the tiebreak on them).

And if the Bills lose we'd slide into the final wildcard spot via our head to head tiebreak over them.

Also go Raiders vs the Chargers. Bills and Chargers losses would move us into the 2nd wildcard slot.

I thought CJ looked pretty good out there given all the time off. He was tremendous on 3rd down and kept so many drives alive. Also big shout out to the officiating crew. That one definitely tilted our way.

Looking forward to KC. Going to be a great test given all of our past weaknesses (KC, Away and Primetime)

Colts 8-4
Jags 8-4
Texans 7-5

Colts play the Jags twice plus the Texans so some of this will work itself out, also have to play two teams from the HFC West Seahawks and Niners, both with a lot on the line
Colts might be lucky to finish 10-7 with how they are starting to fizzle lately after a hot start

Jags get the Jets and Titans sprinkled in with two games vs the Colts and a tough match up with Denver on the road. 11-6 and an AFC South Title for Coen in his 1st season are in play

You guys get Cards and Raiders for easier games, then you have Chiefs, Chargers and the Colts.
If you want to make the Playoffs you need to go 4-1 down the stretch and claw your way to 11-6, that could potentially put you in a tie with Jacksonville and should Indy not do as poorly as I predict, that last game of the season Week 18 in your house could be the start of the WIldcard for you plus a Division Title might be on the line

I can't speak for all NFL fans but I would bet many are rooting for you next week to put the Chiefs just about out of the Playoffs which would make the field wide open for almost anyone

Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud was blitzed on 31.6% of his dropbacks but shredded it as he went 9-of-11 for 134 with a passer rating of 117.4. Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo would play Cover 0, Cover 1 and Cover 2 behind the blitz, but since the Texans' offensive line picked up consistently, Stroud found massive voids in coverage.

Texans cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. did not allow a reception on his only target across 28 coverage snaps against the Colts. This marked Stingley's fifth game this season allowing fewer than 10 yards in coverage. Stingley matched up against Colts wide receivers Michael Pittman Jr. nine times and Alec Pierce eight in the contest, with his lone target coming on the Colts' final drive in the fourth quarter.

Chiefs are without their rookie LT Josh Simmons, who has been playing extremely well. Also their RT and RG didn't practice Wednesday, so might not make the game. The guard didn't play last week, and the tackle missed the second half after being injured.

Houston Texans defensive tackle Tim Settle Jr. is expected to have season-ending surgery on a foot injury he sustained in last week’s game against the Indianapolis Colts, a person with knowledge of the procedure told the Houston Chronicle, confirming an earlier report by the NFL Network.

Settle was placed on the team's injured reserve list Thursday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Houston claimed former Bills cornerback Ja'Marcus Ingram. The move to claim Ingram comes in wake of injury suffered by Kamari Lassiter, who is dealing with a foot injury.

ESPN article that came up with a name for who in the NFL is best at 109 different skills. Texans on the list:

Best speed-to-power: Will Anderson Jr., Texans
Anderson can bend and flatten, using countermoves to disengage from blockers. But he also can win with speed-to-power, collapsing the edges of the pocket. His 10.5 sacks are fifth most in the NFL, and his 23.5% pass rush win rate ranks third.

Best spin move: Danielle Hunter, Texans
Hunter has a slippery spin move off the edge that leaves offensive tackles grabbing at air. He can also use the threat of his spin move to set up an outside rush path. His 11 sacks rank fourth in the NFL.

Best hitter: Azeez Al-Shaair, Texans
Al-Shaair looks to take the ball carrier's soul every time he makes contact. He has thunder in his pads.

Best backfield vision: Derek Stingley Jr., Texans
Stingley uses his backfield vision to overlap seam balls, plus he will get in the weeds looking for work. He has three interceptions and eight pass breakups this season.

Best third-level range: Calen Bullock, Texans
Bullock glides through the third level of the defense with post range and ball skills. And he can cover ground from depth. Bullock's four interceptions are tied for fourth most in the NFL.

Best field goal blocker: Denico Autry, Texans
Autry has blocked a league-best two field goal attempts this season, creating an interior push to slip through gaps and get his hands up.

Anyone else worried about Cold Weather Ka'imi 🍍 blowing this on Sunday? Temps in the mid 20s. I'll once again put in my request to roster two Kickers (one a cold weather specialist).

Seth Payne talking about the colts game and in particular the offensive line play in the blitz pickup

I caught Kurt Warner talking about the game on NFL Network, and he said something to the effect of this may be the best game he's ever seen out of CJ Stroud. The points weren't up there but the actual gameplay was pretty strong. One of the things Seth Payne commented on was the Texans are keeping the number of possessions low and winning the time of possession. They're getting games with both teams getting nine possessions instead of 13 or 14 like most games in the NFL.

The O-line's struggles in the 2nd half were troubling. They were blitzing like mad. Offense is going to have to prepare for that down the stretch.

I think leaving more blockers in can take care of that. That's what most teams try to do; that and quick swing passes and short passes just behind the rushers. It's on the OC to do that, and I think they can certainly do it.

Togiai, ten tackles (2 solo) and a sack.

Glad they extended him at the start of the season and he's locked up through 2026. $3.3m for 2025 and 2026 combined, hugely outplaying his contract.

Yeah they've had success doing that in the past couple of games. I posted above, against the Colts, he was blitzed 31% of the time and went 9-of-11 for 134 with a passer rating of 117.4. Just not sure where they failed to adjust in the second half today. Maybe Chiefs were taking away their adjustments, I don't know.

I was wondering the same thing ---- why the hell don't they give him some more blockers?

because Caley is one of the worst OCs in football. Add that to Demeco's lack of understanding of all things offense and it will inevitably be our downfall. I blame Caserio for hiring another NE/John Carroll buddy and not pursuing Kubiak. Love what he's doing in SEA and could only imagine what he'd accomplish with all the talent we have in these offensive skill positions.

On a positive note, it was great seeing this team perform well in frigid conditions. After watching that game, you'd think KC was the indoor, warm weather team with all the drops and mishaps. We likely have to travel to the cold in the playoffs (PLAYOFFS??? ~ Mora) so that was definitely encouraging.

About midseason they started running some jumbo packages with extra blockers, especially on run plays. It was more effective than the early season struggles but made the offense even more predictable. They settled into a solid lineup and were improving but the Denver game was rough, we lost two starting linemen (Howard concussion, Ingram knee I believe) in addition to Stroud and Pitre to concussions. Before that game they were having a ton of success with Howard at his natural RT but LG was a mess and a major turnstile no matter who they tried. They started experimenting with lineman combinations again due to necessity because of the Denver injuries and have landed on the current combo with Trent Brown RT, Ingram RG, Andrews C, Tytus Howard at LG, and Ersery at LT which has worked well until last night in the 2nd half. I was listening to the radio guys for a little while (who are so much better than a guy like Collinsworth on TV), and they outlined that Chris Jones was having his way with everybody. He beat both tackles when pass rushing, and both Ingram and Andrews in run plays for TFL's. Karlaftis (sp?) was wrecking shop too. The only guy they didn't call out that I recall was Tytus Howard.

I think basically they may not be a bottom 3 line anymore with this combo but they still aren't great when faced with a legit pass rush. They still need personnel upgrades in the offseason in multiple spots as Brown is an old stopgap, LG is a major hole, Howard is turning 30 and in the last year of his relatively expensive deal, Ingram hasn't played as well since his injury against Denver and Andrews is not a great center. Ersery was being graded really well much of the season but has struggled the last few games when he gets more pass rushing attention. They've got a 1st, 2 2nds, and a 3rd and IMO 2 of those picks need to go to the O'line

It also doesn't help that the RB's were really bad at blitz assignment and pass blocking to start the year (Marks has improved quite a bit as the season has gone on) but TE Dalton Schultz blocks like a wet paper bag. He can't pass block or run block (on the line or down the field), he's a major liability and they keep trying to have him help with that despite him sucking at it. I was hoping that Mark Andrews might be free in the offseason as an upgrade but so much for that. They also seem to like Schultz for some reason so we're probably stuck with him for another year since they restructured him for salary space this year and there's a $10MM hit to cut him next year.

Oh, I'll also add that Stroud was doing a very poor job early in the season of identifying the blitz or calling out protections or getting rid of the ball when the line breaks down. He did a much better job of that last night even if there's still obviously room for improvement.

Texans had a season high 18 pressures against Mahomes yesterday.

On plays he was pressured, he was 2 for 12 for 40 yards, with an interception and 2 sacks.

Was looking at possible tiebreakers for us and Jacksonville, should they lose one more than us down the stretch to end in a tie.

They have: vs Jets, @broncos, @Colts and vs Titans.
We have: vs Cardinals, vs Raiders, @Chargers, vs Colts.

It's feasible we could tie and the division record tiebreak goes to either side. I.e.:
We lose to Colts. Jags lose to Broncos and Jets. Jags win div record.
We sweep. Jags lose to Colts. We win div record.

But if the games just go by straight odds and we win the coin flip against Chargers, most likely tied outcome is Jags lose to Broncos and both teams win all the other games. Which would result in a tie in division record too.

Next would be conference record which we have clinched. We're 7-2 but only play 3 more conf games. They are 6-2, but all 4 games are conf games. So for them to lose one more game than us necessary for it to be a tie, they'd end up with more conference losses than us.

The NFL announced its Week 17 schedule Wednesday and the Texans' road game against the Los Angeles Chargers will be played at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27 at Sofi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. The game will be televised on NFL Network and a yet to be determined over-the-air station in the Houston market.

Grab bag of info.

Apparently Demeco said that Marks could have gone back in against the Cards if needed.

Mario Edwards Jr going on injured reserve. The other injury from the game was Stingley's oblique.

Texans scored on 8 of 10 possessions. The two non-scores were a punt and a blocked field goal.

I'm watching the broadcast at the moment. I didn't notice Texans blitz much watching it live in the stadium, and so I'm watching every defensive snap to see how many rushers we send. In the first half:
  • One play they had in 5 down linemen who rushed.
  • One play at 1:13 left in the half where they had 5 linemen and then Lassiter blitzed while a lineman dropped.
Other than that they didn't even really pretend they might blitz. Every play but one the LBs were a good 3-4 yards deep (and that one, Al-Shaair started near the line but wandered back a few secs before the snap). Already seen a little more pressure in the 2nd half, but I don't recall there being a ton beyond 4 man rushes there either with the big lead.

Jawhar Jordan is the first Texans RB this year to go over 100 yards rushing. I think he has earned a few carries against the Raiders and see what he can do with them.

Nico joins AJ and D-Hop as the only Texans receiver to have three 1000 yard receiving seasons.

Nico is #1 in 50+ yard catches since 2023, and is #2 in yards/rec.

Texans lead the league in field goals.

Texans D is #1 in yards and points, and #3 in takeaways. Offense is tied for 2nd best in giveaways. Team as a whole is #2 in turnover differential.

Special teams is last in kickoff return yards, but mostly due to few returns (2nd to last). We're #11 in kickoff return average.

So tiebreakers update. This is all based on my figuring, so might have mistakes.

Jags: Slight change, on the second tiebreak, favoring us further.
  • Head to head: Tie
  • Division record: We both have 1 division loss, they have 2 div games (Titans, Colts) and we have 1 left (Colts).
    • Previously there were paths that either team could win division tiebreak, but that ended. Now it would either be a tie (they lose to Broncos and otherwise we both lose 0 or 1 games to division opponents), or else we win it (they lose one more game to division than we do).
  • Common games: Jags currently are 7-2 against common opponents, we are 6-3. The remaining 3 opponents for both teams will contribute. Since Jags have to lose 1 more than we do in order for us to be tied and caring about tiebreaks, we'd be tied here too.
  • Conference record: We are both 7-2, and both play 3 more conf opponents. Since they have to lose 1 more than we do for us to end up tied, we'd win this for sure.

Wildcard:

Ravens, we own head to head.
Bills we own head to head.

Chargers, whoever wins our game owns head to head.

Steelers are 7-3 in conference (assuming they continue on to beat Miami right now), and we are 7-2. If it went to the next level, we have one fewer loss against common opponents, but we play 2 more games (Chargers, Colts) and they play one more (Ravens).
