DE Connor Barwin lost for the season with an ankle dislocation. Link

Have to wonder if Aaron Schobel's phone was ringing this afternoon. I know he decided to retire, but can't hurt to call him.

NFL network stat: with his sack of Peyton Manning Sunday, Mario Williams passed Jason Taylor as the player who has sacked Peyton the most in Peyton's career. Taylor sacked Manning 5 times in 12 games against him, Mario has sacked him 6 times in 9 games against him.

One of the biggest reasons for hope for the Texans this year is the way Mario played yesterday. He was very active in the backfield on both running and pass plays. That and the offensive line looked tremendous. If you count the way they looked in the 3rd preseason game against the Cowboys, that is two games in a row they have dominated against good competition.I said before the season that if the Texans go at least 2-2 in their first 4 games without Cushing, then they will make the playoffs. 3-1 looks very possible now and 4-0 is not out of the question.

As I replay 7 hours of RedZone I couldnt help but notice the Kubes has continued to leave AJ in on the goalline packages. He didnt start doing this until mid to late last year. That's good news for AJ owners.

Okoye day to day after an ankle injury in practice. From the Chronicle:

Okoye sits outCoach Gary Kubiak said defensive tackle Amobi Okoye was kept out of Thursday's practice after he hurt his right ankle during Wednesday's workout.Okoye was fitted with a boot to stabilize the joint and didn't attend practice. Rookie Earl Mitchell worked with the starters. As for Okoye's status for the Washington game Sunday, Kubiak said he was "day-to-day. If he can't go, then Earl has to go in and play big time this week. You never know as a backup when you're going to get a chance to play. Usually when you get a chance you haven't had much work. (Defensive end Jesse) Nading is a great example of that last week."The previously little-used Nading took over for Connor Barwin when Barwin went down with a dislocated ankle and acquitted himself well, joining in on a sack of Peyton Manning and recovering a Colts onside kick. The Texans brought in veteran defensive ends Ryan Denney and Adewale "Wally" Ogunleye this week to shore up the defensive line with Barwin lost for the season. It appears Denney is more apt to get on the field against the Redskins because of the comfort factor, having played under Texans defensive line coach Bill Kollar in Buffalo.

Okoye and Molden are gametime decisions. If Okoye is out, Earl Mitchell will likely get the extra snaps.

Jesse Nading is likely to see more snaps with Barwin out this week. Kubiak said likely only one of new additions Ryan Denney or Adewale Ogunleye would be active. Speculation I heard earlier was Denney since he's played in this defensive line scheme in Buffalo.

As a stop gap type of situation I really like these 2 signings. I'm just wondering y these guys were available. Was it age?

The team seems to believe in themselves in a way they never have before. How many times have we been on the other side of these kind of comebacks and overtime wins? Way too many.

The run defense looks great and may reach sick levels when Cushing is back. But the secondary has got to start getting some better coverage on people.

Believe that the announcers in today's game said Houston had the youngest starting lineup in football (and the Redskins had the oldest.) You could definitely see it in the secondary today and last week, but I think that bodes well for us for the future.

Can we win against the Cowboys next week? Going to be a big game, we've never been 3-0 to start a season.

Yeah, heard that too and I think it's definitely a good thing, especially if they can hang onto everyone like OD. I saw somewhere (the ESPN AFC South blog?) that as far as average age of the entire roster, the Texans were something like 5th youngest in the NFL.And I think we'll be favored against the Cowboys and rightly so.

The Chronicle article on the game mentions that Kubiak punted in overtime because he didn't like the wind. I was expecting a bit more than that, like hearing that Rackers recovery from his kidney stone was giving him problems or something like that.

Don't recall what the wind was like, though I did notice Rackers boomed the first kickoff and didn't have very long kickoffs on the others, which had me wondering if maybe he wasn't at 100%.

On the subject of Kubiak's in game calls though... well, the passing on the chance for the field goal might be a questionable one. I'd rather have seen them kick it.

But, the last two weeks he's made two good calls worth noting. Against Indy he called the timeout when Indy went for the onside kick up the middle. Small thing perhaps, but in past seasons its the kind of thing we didn't get right.

And then today, the timeout to ice the kicker in overtime turned out to be the right game management move, obviously.

I believe they meant to say youngest secondary.

I am going to be of good sport and not go into the Cowboys' thread and remind them that they were trying to call everyone (not just Texans' fans) unsophisticated because we were watching that offense not be very good during the entire pre-season, but wanting act like being vanilla discounts missing handoffs, dropping passes and acting like basic stunts are gameplanning. My early guesstimate is that like the first two games, the Cowboys will have moments where they throw the ball well, but the Texans will overcome that with being stronger in all the other facets of the game including agressiveness and physicality.

I think they probably meant what they said, that the entire group of starters are the youngest in the NFL. In fact, I bet they got that stat from Chase Stuart's article in the New York times. He actually uses a value system that weights by how important the player is to the team, so weights starters higher than others, and QB higher than say, fullback... and the Texans had the youngest team using that measure.

Hated that call. I know it's a call you'd probably ever only see in OT but still...I was positive that the gods of non-wussy football were going to punish us when the Shanahan's were faced with the exact same choice on their next possession and went for the FG.My favorite "ice the kicker" timeout of all time.

Watching Houston Texans: Inside the Game on ABC 13. Here's what Kubiak said when asked why he punted in overtime:

"There was a little wind coming out of that end zone. Neil told me, 'Coach I'm ok, I'm alright'. But I know if you miss right there, they need 20 yards to beat you, or 15 yards to beat you... I was really concerned about that. We'd played some really good defense late in the game and I thought we could pen them there. Got a little lucky, you know, it worked out."

Thanks for that - hadn't heard about the wind.

Kubiak is still a big wuss. I'm just glad the players wouldn't let Kubiak lose this one. Rackers proved his worth.

That and the net result after Turk punted it into the end zone was the exclamation point to the notion that we should have kicked the FG the first time.

So was I the only Texans fan who was surprised to find out that CB Phillip Buchanon was not only not out of the league, but he was actually getting playing time for someone?

Wasn't he the first line of defense on the Andre TD pass?

Yes, Buchanon and Doughty, the safety AJ outfought for the ball, had coverage on him. Which prompted DeAngelo Hall to proclaim from now on he's going to cover the other team's best receiver and it doesn't matter what defensive coordinator Jim Haslett thinks about it. :lmao:

Duane Brown reportedly suspended for 4 games

caplannfl I'm told Texans OT Duane Brown has been suspended four games, two sources said.

Report: Texans' Duane Brown suspended four games

Posted by Michael David Smith on September 21, 2010 3:56 PM ET

The 2-0 Houston Texans have just taken a hard hit on their offensive line.

Adam Caplan of FOXSports.com reports that Texans offensive tackle Duane Brown has been suspended for four games.

There's no word yet on the reason for Brown's suspension.

Brown has started all 34 games since the Texans selected him in the first round of the 2008 NFL draft.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/...ded-four-games/

Really Duane, REALLY???

ETA: Back to back first rounders get nailed for juicing!? It's like a bad joke...

610 just said that Adam Schefter is reporting it's a 4 game suspension for performance enhancing drugs. And they said Channel 2 has confirmed the Ephraim Salaam signing. Here is Schefters tweet:

Texans LT Duane Brown has been suspended without pay for four games for violating the NFL policy on performance enhancing substances.
Quote from Rick Smith: "We are disappointed that Duane Brown has been suspended. This is a blow to our team."

If he's guilty, I hope he just accepts it and gets the suspension out of the way now rather than appealing. If it had to happen, weeks 3-6 are probably the best 4 consecutive weeks for it to happen. Home games for the most part, winnable games even without him. Hate to not have him for Ware, but the other next best would be playing this week and missing week 7, but that's the Colts, Freeney, and in division game. So better if he just serves it now and lets them be at full strength the last part of the season.

Richard Justice tweeted that the suspension is effective immediately and that he will be allowed back on Texans' premises on Oct. 18 (the day after the Chiefs game)

610 just had a quote from Duane Brown, that he takes full responsibility for what happened and that he took a supplement that had a banned substance in it.

Another Brown quote:

"I want to personally apologize to (team, owner, fans, etc). I have decided not to appeal my suspension. I know the rules and accept my punishment."

That's a breath of fresh air after that whole Cushing debacle.

i guess the good thing about it is that the suspension is gonna be weeks 3-6.

Dal(Ware will have some fun), @Oak, @NYG, KC

If nothing else, Butler has been with the team two plus years, so he knows the system and the players should know him. the question will be simply is he good enough to do the job.

If I may ask here, should I cut bait on James Casey. I've stashed him on a few 24-25 deep dynasty rosters, but all I see beyond a few intriguing pre-season blurbs is a big fat 0.

Is he worth more than a waiver-wire defense I guess is what I'm asking.

Thanks in advance for any feedback on Casey's prospects.

“I take full responsibility for putting myself in this situation,” he said. “I unknowingly took a supplement tainted with a banned substance and now have to deal with the consequences.

I think where he would start having value is if nothing happens with Owen Daniels contract at the end of the season. If for some reason they let him go in free agency (assuming there's a season), then Casey would probably be the guy poised to benefit. Not sure if that helps or not. If you're patient maybe wait to the end of the year and see what happens with OD.
