First time I've seen it this year. I'm used to leagues doing a double header to even things out but seen a bye for a fantasy team that wasn't the first round of the playoffs.

I'm in a 32 team league where the schedule is based on the actual NFL schedule and it uses bye weeks. That's the only time I've ever seen it.

Reasoning?
This is what I was told:"it stops on week 13 and its uneven teams so ppl get byes to keep records the same....did the same thing last year and in a diff league im not commish of is doing it as well....its pretty common actually"It's a 10 teamer so maybe it's common for those? I haven't been in one for a looooooooooooooooooooong time.

It's usually in leagues where there are an odd number of teams so there is always a team that doesn't have an opponent. Never heard of it otherwise.

I would not even play in a league with one. One, I don't want or need a week off during the season. Two, your players already have bye weeks, so no reason to add to it. Three, not all bye weeks are created equal, so you build in an inequity into the league based upon who gets a better bye week. I really see zero upside to it.

Well puy, plus you should know the schedule before the draft. For example, if your bye week is #5, you can draft players that fit that schedule so you do not lose them on their own bye week. You can literally go from never losing a player to a bye week to losing them twice.

no byes, they'd just get in the way of my winning streaks
Ha... yea, 2-0 to start and now I just noticed my bye is week 3. Bullcrap. Everyone who has a bye before the NFL's byes start is at a disadvantage.
Wow, that is massively unfair. Of course you should have checked earlier, but whoever set that league up is either clueless or dishonest.
I thought I was pretty thorough in looking over the rules and stuff... since I've absolutely never heard of such a thing as mid-season byes, I didn't think to look for it.

I agree it's on me though.

Byes are 100% common in head-to-head leagues with an odd number of teams...it's the only good way to handle it. The reason they're not common otherwise is that most leagues do even numbers to avoid that situation.

It's really just simple math...11 teams = 5 matchups and an odd man out each week. You can't give the odd man a free win, so you have to do byes. I'm sure its not a 10 team league as you said or you wouldn't have byes.

This makes no sense. If there's any disadvantage to your team, your opponent will always be facing the same disadvantage so it all evens out.In other words, if you have your bye in week 3, you're missing out on playing another team whose players have no byes that week either.

Double header >>>>>> Byes.heck we switched to rotisserie records with 11 guys to avoid byes. Anything is better than having a regular season bye.Yeah I see the OP posted a 10 team league. Then it really makes no sense.

DOES NOT COMPUTE!!!

Not sure I follow here.

What about the guy who has 4 out of his first 6 picks on a week 8 bye and also has a team bye week 8?

I think his point is something like: you have a 13 week regular season, and the NFL has six bye weeks (5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 11). So if your bye is in week 3, then you play six weeks against full strength opponents (1, 2, 4, 10, 12, and 13) and six weeks against teams that are potentially less than full strength due to byes. If your bye is in week 5, then you play seven weeks against full strength opponents and five weeks against teams that are potentially less than full strength due to byes. Put more simply, every week you play, you and your opponent are in the same boat. Either some NFL players are on bye, or they aren't.

The problem with this reasoning is that having a fantasy bye week during the NFL bye weeks allows you to specifically construct your team to take advantage of that. You could, in theory, draft a whole team of players that are on bye week 7 if your fantasy team is on bye week 7. Then every single week you play, you're at full strength. A team with a bye in week 3 doesn't have such an advantage - they have nowhere to "stash" their byes.

It's terribly unfair, and it makes no sense to have any byes whatsoever in a ten-team league. Sounds like commish is in way over his head.

I'm sure its not a 10 team league as you said or you wouldn't have byes.
 Dude... it's a 10 team league. I can manage to count that high... though anything above and I'll have to pull off my socks.
Haha, no offense of course, but you said the commish told you there were uneven teams...so either you or he is mistaken. 10 is an even number. If it is in fact 10 teams, talk to your league about changing that soon, because byes wouldn't be needed.

Ah, I see. No offense taken. I think he might have meant the weeks are uneven. Not totally sure.

MFL leagues can still avoid byes with odd number of teams because it permits you to have one team each week play an opponent that gets the league average score. Works great.

I will say this nicely but What the hell does that have to do with anything?? Is there multiple bye weeks too. This sounds FUBAR - I don't think your commish knows what he is doing10 team schedules are the easiest to do. Do you not have divisions? What the hell is the difference between 12 games or 13? Are you only playing 9 games. I NEED TO KNOW

makes even less sense b/c in a 10 team league with 2 divisions they could everyone in the division twice (8 games) and out of division once (5 games) for a total of 13.

LOLOk... 10 teams, 2 divisions. 6 teams make the playoffs (I know... 60%?! r.tarded right?) 2 teams get 1st rnd byes, playoffs start week 15 (yay! week 17 championship! )

Ok... I think this is starting to make SOME sense. Looks like the stupid week 17 championship and allowing over half the league in the playoffs is what is causing this. Most recent response from commish:

"the byes are to make sure no one plays someone 3x when they shouldnt....

14 weeks with 1 bye = 9 weeks of playing each guy 1x, 4 weeks of playing within division, and 1 week of bye which will all be early byes......

if there were no byes, there would be certain people that play someone 3x while someone else plays him only 2x and all that ####, which ####s up head to head records and all that.....had to do it last year too"

I haven't known the commish long but I have no reason to distrust him and several of the guys in the league are back from last year and know him from a Madden league where they play for $$$. It's a very low stakes league anyway, I'm not sweating it. I just want the whole scenario to make sense to me.

This guy has no business being the commissioner of a fantasy football league.

That is awful. Since the beginning of time 10 teams are 2 divisions of 5. 6 make playoffs. The season is weeks 1-13, the playoffs are week 14,15,16 and seeds 1 and 2 have a bye in week 14.

so simple a caveman can do it

Thanks for the replies guys.

Dude still insists that it's common. I sent him the poll results, but not the link to this thread yet.

I'm pretty sure the 1 vote for "pretty common" was some jokster from the FFA when I accidentally started the thread there.
