How do you guys use your Taxi Squad.......or do you? (1 Viewer)

Some people in our league have mentioned possibly using a Taxi Squad this year. We have never used this, and I was looking for some information. How do you guys use it?? What exactly is it for?? (IR, rookies???).

Please excuse my ignorance about this. :lmao:

We have had this league for about 5 or 6 years now, but never considered this option. I am just looking for opinions, or suggestions on how to use this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Our league uses it for Rookies and 2nd year players. Gives you a little protection if you don't want to use up a roster slot for them.

Practice Squad (Taxi Squad)Practice squad players must be NFL rookies or second year players only. There are only five (5) spots on the PS. Once used, they can not be re-used, even in preseason. Three (3) of the five (5) players assigned to a team's practice squad may be activated to that team's active roster at any time during the season, however the team must accommodate the active player roster limits as prescribed above. Each practice player that is activated will result in the loss of a spot on that team's practice squad roster. Players may be added to the practice squad during the regular season provided that the players are acquired through the free agency or trade process and not off of an active roster, and that the team has practice squad roster spots available to them.

We use a "Rookie Only Taxi Squad" in our Dynasty.

We have our rookie draft in 2 weeks. We have a 7 round draft. We are allowed 5 ROTS spots. Once a rookie has been in a starting lineup, he is no longer allowed to go back to the ROTS. We are allowed to carry him on our roster all season and demote him if we wish, but once he is inserted into our lineup, thats it.

If a rookie is in the starting lineup, it frees up another spot for a diffferent rookie.

Our league uses a Taxi Squad of 3 players that are rookies........we draft 7 altogether, OFF and IDPs.

For instance last season, I took Vince Young, Derek Hagan, Jerome Harrison, Ernie Sims, Elvis Dumervil and can't remember the last 2 players due to them being dropped already. In this league we assign contracts to our players.

Since Ernie Sims had a great chance of starting from Day 1, I assigned him a contract......Dumervil also. However, I designated VYoung, DHagan, JHarrison to my Taxi and wanted to wait and see what would happen with them before giving them contracts. Later in the year, I had to sign Vince to a contract when McScabb got injured. I left Hagan and Harrison on the Taxi until just recently. Before our rookie draft this year, you have to assign them a contract or release them. And once you give them a contract, you can not retract them back to the Taxi.

Hopefully this gives you a little help.

In a pure dynasty league(keep all) I'm in we have a three man practice squad for any player with 1-3 years of experience.

If you EVER start him you can no longer keep him on the practice squad.

In my 7 man keeper with a 3 man practice Squad (10 total) league you start a practice squad guy

3 times he has to be a reguler keeper for next year.

16 team dynasty, 25 roster spots, no IR, 3 round rookie draft beginning with the final pick in the NFL draft.

As many draft picks as you can muster go onto your rookie list, however they need to be picked up before the first pick in next year's NFL draft is made.

During any stage of the season if the rookie is to be promoted to the 25-man roster to be able to play, he simply replaces a veteran who is tossed to the FA pile.

Why use taxi squads or IR at all?

Just expand your rosters by a few players and let each owner do with those spots as they wish. Variations in leagues are cool but taxi squads and IR spots result in unneeded complication imo.

Just my 2 cents.

There is a huge difference IMO.If you have 16-team league with 16 player rosters, and say a 2 player IR, it's useful to be able to put a guy on IR and pick up a scrub for a few weeks, then drop him when you want to take your guy off IR.Sure, you could argue just expand the roster to 18, problem solved. Not so much. Not every team in a 16 team league will have 2 guys on IR. Probably only 25-50% will at any one time.In a 16team/16player roster league, that's 256 rostered players with a handful of IR'd guys.If you take that league and eliminate IR and expand the roster, you have just depleted the FA pool by 32 players, a significant move.I suppose its personal preference. I like to be in a league where every week there are marginally playable guys in the FA pool. To me, its not fun if every worthwhile player is rostered. But to each his own.

Fair points, but the exact same thing occurs when leagues have taxi squads or IR spots: less talent on the waiver wire.I prefer extra roster spots without those two qualifications...the quality owners will look ahead and use those extra roster spots to their benefit and be rewarded when injuries occur or playing time changes. Others will waste them on 'the next big thing' that really isn't. Plus you don't have to worry about what players can and can't go on IR and all the nonsense that usually comes with IR and taxi spots. Each league needs to do what they feel is right to make it fun. If your league owners love taxi spots and the strategy that can go with them (when done correctly) more power to you. :lmao:

I would add that "we" also have an Injured Reserve list. Another dynasty league I'm in allows teams to sign players off of other teams' practice squads in return for compensation:
8a. TAXI SQUAD: The Taxi Squad may only consist of NFL Rookies. Players must be designated for the Taxi Squad no later than 5 days before the first game of the NFL season. A player may be promoted from the Taxi Squad to the Active Roster at any time, however once a player is on any teams Active Roster, they may not be demoted to the Taxi Squad. Each team is allowed 3 Taxi Squad slots. During the season, ANY owner may sign a player from ANY other owners Taxi Squad by posting the request on the leagues message board and emailing the original owner concerning the steal attempt. The original owner of the player will then have 72 hours to decide if if they want to promote the player to their active roster or forefit him. The owner making the claim must provide compensation to the original owner. Compensation will be in the form of a draft pick in the next years rookie draft. equal to ONE round higher than the player was originally drafted in. If a player was drafted in the 1st round, compensation will be a 1st and 2nd round draft pick. If a player went undrafted in the rookie draft, compensation will be a 5th round pick. To make a claim you must own a pick in that round for the next rookie draft prior to the claim. If multiple picks are owned in that round then it will be at the discretion of the owner losing the player on which pick they want. A player claimed from a Taxi Squad must be placed on the new teams Active Roster. Taxi Squad players are not permitted to be traded; they must be promoted to the Active Roster to become a tradeable commodity. Commisioners discretion will be used in disputes regarding adequate time to acknowledge the steal attempt in relation to the 72 hours and personal vacation/away schedules.

Here's my league's Taxi rules:

Each owner will have 1 Taxi squad (veteran developmental):

Taxi Squad is 1 open spot that is like the DS above but is only for non-rookie players.

No rookie is allowed to be placed on TS.

To place a player on the TS it will cost a Free Agent pick.

An owner can put a player on TS anytime after the drop date until the Thanksgiving eve free agent deadline.

There is no time limit for how long a player may stay on the TS as long as he's a non-rookie and is in the NFL he may be on your taxi squad.

An owner may put a player on the taxi squad at anytime until the Thanksgiving eve free agent deadline.

An owner is allowed to take a player off TS at anytime, even after the Thanksgiving eve deadline but you will be required to drop an existing player in order to put a TS player on your active roster.

Trades involving TS players are like taking them off the taxi so the other owner must use a free agent pick if he wishes to put the player on his Taxi squad.

Taxi Squad is developmental for my leagues. Up to 5 players (no more than 3 offense) who are first and second year only. If you promote a player, the TS slot stays empty for the remainder of the season. You may promote only 1 per season.

We also have an IR, with a max of 5. They must be placed on the NFL's IR prior to being deactivated in our league. Once on IR the player must stay there for the season.

We use a Developement Squad, that is for any 2 players drafted during our Rookie/Free Agent draft. They are not allowed on your roster until the following year. We use a 45 year cap so the advantage is I can take a chance and wait for him to develop before I have to sign a contract.

We are a 12 team dynasty league with a 23 man roster with two taxi squad spots. We allow anyone to go into those taxi squad spots. Could be a rookie waiting to be developed or could be IR while you take a chance on another player to get you some playing time. We have to keep them on there until week 6. At that point we can make any changes we want. After week 6, all taxi squad players are there for the rest of the year. I like it. It is something more to manage but that is what makes it fun because you have to think about wether or not a guy will be back from injury or will that rookie earn some playing time because you could make a decision that you cant undo and could come back to haunt you.

Hello gents, I've been pondering the Taxi Squad idea to a league but I have a question.

How do you make room on your roster once you bring a player up from the Taxi Squad?

Do you drop a player in order to make room?

Are there slots available but only for the Taxi Squad?

In my two leagues with taxi squads, to make room you must either drop or trade a player on your active roster, or send him to the injured reserve.

We used or Taxi Squad spot as a "Prospect Player" for deep players you wanted to consider as a keeper but didnt want to waste a roster spot. One this player was put in the taxi squad, he was locked on there for the entire season, and you couldnt use him in your lineup. Our limitation was that the player must be drafted in the 10th round or later. Our Keeper league allows you to keep up to (4), with teams forfeiting a draft pick (2) rounds up from where player was drafted. Example: Matt Schaub was Mr. Irrelavant, I Drafted him in the 18th round in 2006. I will keep him in 2007 and have to forfeit my 16th round draft pick this year.

Possible flaws was some guy in our league put David Carr in there, which locked up a Bye Week QB Starter. He did this for he didnt like the system at the time.

Also what if Alex Smith Blew Up and was getting 4 TDs a week. He would have to sit there on the taxi squad unavailable for use for the entire season.

Edit Suggestion:(I guess we could put in a rule that if removed for the Taxi Squad, a player would have to forfit a 10th round pick in the next years draft, and you couldnt use the taxi squad again that year, maybe longer???

Players that were put in these locked "prospect" roster spot in 2006:

Matt Schaub QB ATL (Me  )

Jerome Harrison RB CLE

Priest Holmes RB KC

Domink Davis (Could have IR em) RB HOU

Brian Calhoun RB DET

Alex Smith QB SF

Chris Perry RB CIN

Chris Henry WR CIN

Greg Jones RB JAX

Chad Jackson WR NE

Rosco Parrish WE BUF

Not sure we will bring it back for 2007, but I liked the idea of a deep keeper prospect that you like but would never use in your line up.

Any input on the system, how to improve, or to junk it all together would be greatly appreciated....

In my keeper league we use our "practice squad" (or taxi squad or whatever you want to call it) for developmental purposes.

Teams have until just prior to week 3 to declare one "practice squad player" that has to be either a rookie or second year player. That player becomes an extra keeper (over and above the six keepers that every team has) the next season so long as the team does not start that player during this season.
