Long story but... Seven weeks ago I purchased 6 chicks on the interweb. They're supposed to be hens only. They are doing fine, and as far as I know they are all hens. Now comes the fun stuff. SIGH My covenance does not allow poultry (15 homes). I don't care. Been here 18 years, and ALL of the neighbors have broken the covenances at one point or another. Soooo being the great neighbor that I am I decided to build a coop which the neighbors couldn't squawk about (pun intended). I've spent more than every waking moment of the past seven weeks building this coupe de ville (It's as heavy as one, It cost as much as one, It's as nice as one. etc).

I've told a few neighbors what's going on. They all seemed fine when I explained that my 11yo is going to start a bus. selling the eggs (2 dozen a week max). "great for her yadda yadda" no impact on anyone yadda yadda...

Today I hear from an "informed" neighbor that a PITA neighbor got wind of my plan and wants to prevent this from happenning. Let me remind you that I have spent the last 7 weeks building the ultimate coop that will be anything but an eyesore(cedar, heated, cooled, weathervane, etc). that I have 7.5 month old birds that are way too big for the brooder and they need to be out in the coop, I guarantee the chickens will make far less noise than any of my neighbors dogs. These chickens will have ZERO impact on the Biatches. yet they still plan to complain.

What can they do? How much will it cost them to stop me?

Thanks

anyone else doing the chicken thing?

I got five chickens in October. They are great. The eggs are the best, and I dont know that I will ever be able to eat a store egg again. :X :

I sell them $3.00 a dozen. I come close to breaking even on it. I am thinking of getting more as the demand for eggs seems to be going up. People love fresh eggs and I cant blame them.

They are fun as well. I have befriended them and they come to me like a dog would.

They are just playing gay chicken with you.

Sexual orientation of the chickens?
Frank Costanza: Let me understand, you got the hen, the chicken and the rooster. The rooster goes with the chicken. So, who's having sex with the hen? George Costanza: Why don't we talk about it another time. Frank Costanza: But you see my point here? You only hear of a hen, a rooster and a chicken. Something's missing! Mrs. Ross: Something's missing all right. Mr. Ross: They're all chickens. The rooster has sex with all of them. Frank Costanza: That's perverse.

I bought 6 chicks for my daughter for 4H (Columbian Rock Cross). They were supposed to be all hens but I ended up with 3 roosters. :kicksrock:

What do fresh eggs taste like compared to store bought? I put a lot of time, money, and effort into putting up a tree house that wouldn't be an eyesore and still got a threatening anonymous letter mailed to me. Actually typed on an old fashioned typewriter. Telling me that I needed to fix my mistake.

:finger:

However, there are no covenances (sp) AGAINST building a tree house herelike there are regarding the raising of poultry there. Good luck with that. :bye:

edited to add: Worse comes to worse, maybe you could convert the coop into a tree house...

What covenances have these other neighbors broken in the past?

Is this like your neighbors taking an inch, and you come along to take a mile?

No shedsNo trailersNo boatsDogs barking all day and night longUnregistered cars in yard No above ground poolsetcMy chickens will be a treat compared to some of the other "violations" The neighbor reported to have a problem has a three year old delapitated trampoline in the back yard along with barking/threatening dogs and junk cars in the yard. Did I mention finishing the third floor of the home with no building permit.Bring it on biatches

They have much more flavor. I have to be honest and say at first I did not see the difference. I noticed the difference when I had a store bought egg after eating the fresh ones for a week or so. The fresh ones are also a lot firmer. They are much easier to fry. When I say that I mean the yolk does not break easily. I also eat a lot of hard boiled eggs as a healthy snack and I notice a difference in taste and consistency. Once you go fresh you wont go back.

Trailer Park? Seriously shouldn't be a problem if the visual in my head is correct.

My wife was not really an egg person until we started getting fresh eggs from my buddy. There is a noticeable difference in taste, texture and the way they cook.

What makes them different? What do they do to the eggs that you get from the store, or, I guess, what do they do to the chickens?

I would be willing to bet farm raised chickens are healthier birds for one thing. I once tried to throw one of these eggs across the road, came up short and it actually bounced before breaking.

Well in my buddies case the chickens are truly free range. They don't eat some mush they eat normal chicken stuff like bugs and flowers. The birds aren't shot full of anti-biotics and they are healthier in appearance than factory farm chickens. The eggs don't get treated in any way before I get them. The eggs themselves have much better looking yolks and in general the consistency of the egg is much more firm. And as I said there is a noticeable taste difference. The fresh eggs have a fuller taste while grocery store eggs always taste a bit like they have been in the fridge too long.

Oh ok. We just had breakfast recently in a place in Baltimore that buys from only local grown, free range chickens. I did notice the difference but thought it was more in the preparation. Good to know...thx.

Was that some kind of "chicken crossing the road" test?

:goodposting: If you have ever been to a large egg production facility, you would probably have a hard time eating eggs. We took a field trip in grade school. I do not eat eggs.

Your buddy doesn't feed his chickens? Are you sure about that?

Doesn't everyone want to see a picture of a chicken coop that costs as much as a caddy? Come on guy - crank it up and post it here. Big fans of craftsmanship here.

You're in for a big surprise.
I used to raise show fowl myself. I am going to give two of them away when they get a little bigger. They were already crowing and fighting at 9-10 weeks.
I'd be ditching all the roosters. Don't need 'em for the hens to lay.

I got some cute little ducklings and chicks from the pet store when I was a kid. They were so cute when little but sure #### a lot after they grew up. It was a lot of fun waiting for the chickens to lay their eyes.
