I'm at 33, but I knocked out Alaska last year and will knock out Hawaii later this year, so the whole 50 is suddenly in play.

Everywhere except Minnesota, Wisconsin, ND, Maine, RI, CT, NH, and VT.

Sister lives in NH, so good chance I visit New England at some point. But cannot think of any reason to go anywhere near the upper Midwest. The UP and Canada gotta count for something, right?

NY, NJ, PA, MA, IL, NV, CA. Probably a couple more if I worked out the route the bus took from NYC to Boston but I'm not counting those

40 I believe.

Missing Alaska, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Delaware, New Hampshire, Maine, Connecticut.

Surprisingly it’s under 20 for me. I would like to go to Alaska, Hawaii, Boston and maybe a couple other places. For the most part though, I feel like having missed out on the Dakotas, Oklahoma, etc. I probably have more vacations in Michigan and international than around the US.

Just missing Hawaii and Alaska. We have road tripped the hell out of this country with our kids. They are 9 and 11 and they are only missing Hawaii, Alaska, Louisiana, and Mississippi

Minneapolis was beautiful in the summer when I was there.
Yeah, I'm sure it's similar to MI, where I lived a couple years. Weather was great for like 6 weeks a year. But really not a destination for anything that interests me, or my wife.

On your list AK, MT, ID and SD are definitely worth visiting, if you like the outdoors.

I took a couple cross country road trips in late high school/early college. Great way to see National Parks, if nothing else.

25 for me. But unfortunately they almost all are on the east coast. I've gone west of the Mississippi river to Vegas only.

40 I believe.

Missing Alaska, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Delaware, New Hampshire, Maine, Connecticut.
Sort of similar except I was born and raised in CT. Been to everything east of the Mississippi and most everything middle down. Really the upper northwest, except WA (been to Seattle for a few weeks). OR, ID, MT, SD, ND, WY, HI and AK.

Except for ND, that's a awesome list of places to visit.

Still missing Alaska, New Mexico, Oklahoma. Knocked out probably 4-5 states while taking family road trips out west during the pandemic (Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, etc). Mrs APK and I are missing the exact same list, which makes sense since we’ve been a couple for 30 years.

Planning to do Alaska in a couple of years. Hoping to do a long weekend in NM with my wife next fall, as part of a wedding anniversary trip. Oklahoma…..can someone convince me to go there?

Probably is, but never had a reason to drive up there or work there. Most of my 44 states have been work related. My wife is a beach person so our trips have been south of the border trips.

I have been everywhere except the north east corner of the country:
Maine
Vermont
New Hampshire
Massachusetts
Connecticut
Rhode Island

I have been in multiple leagues with @LBH since 2005 and he has worked as a rafting/fly fishing guide in maine. I need to make it up there and visit him one of these years.

Teddy Roosevelt Park was pretty cool. Ditto for the Badlands.

I have lived in/and or worked in 5 of the states on that you are missing.

South dakota badlands >>>>> ND badlands, and I say that as someone who has lived in North dakota as a kid and then again as an adult.

Fair point. I did both on the same trip (out and back) so it sort of blended together…..

Badlands is cool, but mostly in SD.

I‘ll be MT this summer, so maybe can detour to ND.

ETA Nm, Montana is a huge state.

OK is a tough sell, though I’ve heard OKC is nice?

Quick count was 39 but then I remembered I did a big road trip from the Midwest to all the western states with my parents when I was a kid, so I probably drove through another four or five.

4 left to go. NH, VT, OR and AK. Given that I enjoy hiking and beer, it's strange that I've missed these 4. But I rarely set my travel plans based on what some cartographer drew 100+ years ago.

NH, VT are both awesome to hike and great natural beauty.

New York
Pennsylvania
Maryland
Delaware
West Virginia
Virginia
NC
SC
Georgia
Florida
Tennessee
Kentucky
Ohio
Michigan
Indiana
Illinois
Wisconsin
Louisiana
Texas
Possibly New Mexico but I’ll knock that out soon
Arizona
Nevada
California
Hawaii

31-33, depending on how you define the terms. I went to a bachelor party in Cincinnati where I flew into the airport in Kentucky, then went to a casino in Indiana before heading back to Cinci, where we stayed. I'm inclined to count IN since we did an activity there, but not KY since that was just an airport. (I have a similar debate with respect to countries I've visited; the only time I've ever been in Switzerland was a 5-hour layover in Geneva)

Same here. Missing Alaksa, Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Oregon, Arizona, Nebraska, Iowa. Basically the northern tier. Will hit Arizona this summer and Alaska on a cruise next year.

I've heard the White Mountains are awesome. At some point I'd like to go hit those in NH, then go to ME and hit Baxter State Park (Katadhin, etc.)

Does driving through count or do I need to make some type of meaningful trip?
Right. Also, does landing in the state's airport (or an airport within that state) count?

These answers change my answer quite a bit.

Counts IMO

so yeah I need to add New Jersey because I took a wrong turn in Philly and ended up on the bridge to jersey and had to do a quick turnaround. Pretty sure I had to pay a toll too

48. Stupid Dakotas.

Whoa! This is my list too! :hifive:

We took a LOT of road trips as a family. Texas to Maine and back a few times (and later when I went to summer camp there, I would fly to Maine and then my parents would meet us in the car and drive us home after 7 weeks). Texas to Minnesota and back when I was about 5, which knocked out Kansas and some others. Texas to Idaho and back by car AND train. And then Texas to Oregon when I moved out here.

But never hit the Dakotas and no real plans to do so.

50

I get a lot of satisfaction driving into a new city and thinking about its origins from an industrial standpoint (i.e. why is it here, specifically?)

A lot of it of course tracks the early railroads, rivers and cattle drives. Gold and mineral deposits. Hubs of trade. Etc. Makes the drive interesting.

The States I haven't been to...

North Dakota
South Dakota
North Carolina
South Carolina
Maine
New Hampshire
Rhode Island
Vermont
Kentucky
West Virginia

Looks like 35. Missing Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Montana, Idaho, Utah, Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii.

I’ve been to airports in a few (including someone judging me at O’Hare for putting ketchup on my hot dog, which may count for Illinois experience).

And I have plans to go to Hawaii this summer!

All of them. Between a month long trip to tour the US, a quest to go to all the MLB parks and a cruise, I've been to all of them.
What were you favorites? Least favorite?
Florida (where I now live...and excluding the Keys) is my least favorite. Mississippi and Texas are up there too. It may sound cliche but Hawaii was one of my absolute favorites and I fell in love with Durango Colorado as soon as we got into town. We have some INCREDIBLY awesome places in this country. I will say that a good part of the NE state visits were the shortest visits.

When I was a kid, growing up in a working class Boston household, we never travelled. Went to NH to a cabin a few times, and went to Disney once, and DC once. Was always jealous of friends that got to travel, for I always wanted to. Of the 48 I have been to, at least half of them (for the first time) were when I was 18-22 or so and followed the Dead or Phish all over the place. Was a great way to road trip as a youngster and get out and about and see this country.

And now that I have kids, it's been the one of the few things that I have given my kids that I didn't have, but wanted. Travels

Missing the six tiny states in the extreme Northeast US. And pretty much all of them east of Texas and south of Virginia. Good on the rest, so about 30 or so. Might be in Georgia in a few months for a conference, and if so, I'll take a few extra days and knock some of the Southeast US states.

I've been fortunate to not only travel for work but I took a cross-country trip with a buddy right after college. I've never been to West Virginia, Alaska, Maine, New Hampshire, Alabama, Idaho or Montana. So 43.

Actually headed to North Dakota for the third time in about a year or so on Wednesday morning.
