How many three and outs did NE have all season? (1 Viewer)

Where could I find that stat?? I am not talking about late in a blowout win.

The last few weeks opposing coachs are coaching as if they are going to hold NE to three and out and get the ball back.

Or kick the fG and pin them deep. That is just not going to happen vs the 2007 Pats.

If you want to beat this team you have to score TDs when you are in position..or take a chance and go for the first down and possible TD.

I'm not sure where you can find it, but I know that San Diego held them to 3 and out twice (IIRC) in their week 2 meeting and at least once yesterday. You could look at the drive summaries at ESPN, but itw ould probably be a pain b/c it isn't conveinent. That said, SD should have went for it on 4th down with 9 minutes left. You have to figure you'll "maybe" get the ball back one more time, small chance for 2 more times.

I forgot that I actually have this data.

NE had 171 possessions all year (not including playoffs).

25 times they ran 3 plays and punted

6 times they turned the ball over (5 int, 1 fumble) within 3 plays

There other plays of 3 or fewer included 10 -end of half/game, 16 TD's

So roughly 18% of the time they went 3 and out or turned the ball over within 3 plays.

Edit for more stats:

Roughly 47% of NE's drives ended in 5 plays or less (81 of 171) with the following breakdown

24 TD's

31 Punts

2 Missed FG's

6 Int

2 Fumbles

3 FG's

12 End of half (or game)

1 turnover on downs

Someone call...? ;) I believe this (the bolded statement) is the only true meaning for 3-n-Out.

Good stuff, but it's not that valuable without context. What is the league average? What are the numbers for the next best team or perhaps the average of the 12 playoff teams.

Given the nature of the original question, I'd say the most important numbers are 3 down-punt + TO in <=3 plays + over on downs in 4 plays (if available) vs. # of possessions.

In 171 possessions (161 possessions not cut short by end of half/game), the Patriots scored 67 TDs and 21 FGs. That means that they scored a TD on 42% of their offensive possessions, and scored on 55% of their offensive possessions. That's pretty incredible.
