In spite of all the doomsayers, this isn't a Yankees club that's set up to be a dynasty. Except for the right side of the infield and the front half of the rotation, the squad is either not very young, not very good or both. They'll have to replace a number of key members of the team over the next five years, or deal with the egos of superstars in decline. Their farm system is better than it was but it's not a first rate organization. They regularly give up compensatory picks for signing free agents and pick near the end of the round.Being able to outspend their opponents is a big advantage, but management still has to spend wisely. Aging players wear down and get hurt, so they have to account for depth as well. I think their bankroll alone means the Yankees are well positioned to contend every year but I wouldn't expect them to go on a 3-5 year run.
This season continues to remind me of 1996, even moreso considering your points above. The 96 team had a lot of older vets too like Strawberry, Raines, Chili, Girardi, Duncan, Hayes, Boggs, Key, Cone (though he had several more top years), Wetteland, most of the rest of the pen, Gooden, Fielder...those guys were getting old in a hurry. They had one more playoff go-round with most of those guys in 1997, and then by 1998 it was younger mainstays from that team (Jeter, Tino, Bernie, Mo, Pettitte) and a few more young additions (Ledee, Spencer, Posada, Mendoza) as well as a few key additions (Knoblauch, Brosius, eventually Clemens and Justice) that enhanced it to a dynasty level. If they let Matsui walk after this year, that gets them a bit younger if not better. There are always going to be FA additions, because let's face it that's how the Yanks roll. But there are some potentially nice chips in the minors to add to the Cano/Hughes/Joba/Swisher/Teixeira/ARod/Jeter/CC/Burnett core pool. Guys like Austin Jackson (he of the 4 HR), Mark Melancon, Jesus Montero, Austin Romine, and if he learns to throw strikes Andrew Brackman are all guys who could potentially contribute over the next 3-5 years. Not saying I'm expecting a repeat of 1998-2000, but like you said the Yankee money is always going to keep them in contention for a playoff spot.

They'll replace Matsui or Damon with Holliday this off-season. If they're especially frisky they'll sign Bay too. And then they'll get whatever top FA is around in 2010. They may not go on a 3-4 year tear, but they'll always be in the playoffs or in the mix. And we as baseball fans will just keep bending over and taking it.Personally this is the first time I've watch almost none of the World Series (less than 3 innings total, and none last night). I just hate that a team can go spend $400 million in one off-season and buy a title. Disgusting.

You missed a pretty good series

I don't know. It wasn't even really out of spite. I just found better things to watch or do. Just finally had enough. I know it means nothing to anybody, but I guess I just don't care when it gets to that point.

I think somebody needs a hug.

congrats yankee fans, but the above poster is why those outside of new york and now boston can take or leave baseball when you have this kind of world series.

The phillies winning last year, and the two red sox titles were interesting b/c of how long it had been since those teams won it all. It masked a little of the "big spender" label but it still puts a pretty simple premise out there: Spend less that 90 million on payroll and you are not likely to make the playoffs.

The Yankees (and by default now the red sox) are now championship buyers, not winners. The marlins first title is the same thing (the second title was another story)

While I understand it is the current nature of the game, you cannot discount those people who downgrade this b/c of "big payroll". The yanks get tarnished more than other teams b/c they are the flagship big payroll franchise. Most Yankee fans could give a crap about this sure, but I am talking about middle of the road beisbol fans.
