How much do you downgrade Alex Rodriguez on draft day? (1 Viewer)

Before the SI article, A-rod was pretty much a consensus pick at no lower than 1.03. Proponents of speed and position scarcity may have ranked him beneath H. Ramirez and J. Reyes, while others who favor risk minimization had A-rod at the very top.

Now that he's facing a possible suspension and additional fan/media pressure on his historically fragile psyche, how far does he drop on your redraft board?

I would have considered him at 1.01. Now it's 1.03 or 1.04. I take Hanley and Pujols ahead of him for sure. My redraft league is 7x7, which deemphasizes SBs, so Reyes isn't in my top 5.

He won't be suspended. The union would fight that tooth and nail, and have a 99% chance of winning.

Dont see why this would downgrade him, he's been handling the NY media pressure well enough for years and I fail to see how this is that much different.

Frankly I have Wright over him at 3B. If you assume he's fully off the juice now, you have a 33 year old ex-juicer 3B on the downswing vs a 26 yr old in the prime of his career. Granted Wright won't hit 50 HRs, but I don't think A-rod is either.

I wouldn't be gravely concerned. Can't see A-Rod just totally crumbling over this. Could see his numbers taking a slight hit, but he's definitely still in the elite tier.

That said, if I were to hypothetically have the 3rd pick in a draft and there were another player available who played the same position and put up similar numbers, but came with virtually no risk, I would probably be leaning towards taking that guy over A-Rod.

HTH, TRE.

Wright is the best/only current comp for Arod. Rodriguez has an established power level greater than Wright and probably has a better chance of hitting 40+ HRs. Wright has always been a very high percentage base stealer. I'd consider ranking him over Arod in a redraft if he had put up another 30 SB year, but Manuel cut his running down.

New ballparks are an unknown for both. Early indications are that Citi will be a pitcher's friend.

If ARod has been on anything these past 4 years, its been HGH, which still wont show up in a drug test. And I'd hardly call him on the downswing. 2007 was better than 2008, but not by enough to consider him on the downswing.

I would take him 2nd to Hanley Ramirez. Don't see why you would downgrade him; he's a sure thing as there is out there to produce great numbers.

I have the #1 pick in a 14 team redraft league - H2H - 7X7 league.

Let me go on record and say I despise Aroid - irks me just to look at him. With that said I'm having a hard time getting past his every other year monster stats . . .

'03 - 47 HR's, 118, RBI, 124 Runs, 17 SB's, .298 AVG, .396 OBP

'05 - 48 HR's 130, RBI, 124 Runs, 21 SB's, .321 AVG, .421 OBP

'07 - 54 HR's, 156 RBI, 143 Runs, 24 SB's, .314 AVG, .422 OBP

Those stats are SICK !

NO way David Wright (and I'm a HUGE fan) comes close to those numbers.

I'm not sold on Hanley Ramirez stealing all this bases batting 3rd either. While he only had 54 AB's last year batting 3rd his numbers in the 3 hole are not impressive. Also - no way he comes close to those Arod numbers.

I really don't want to take Arod but I can't get past his every other year explosion in stats. I also think 3B is not as deep as SS.

Please help.

The every other year thing isn't really a deciding factor. It's a fluke. As for HGH, I remember reading a bunch of stuff at BPro stating that studies have shown that HGH does very little to increase strength. It pretty much just cuts you up.

ARod is a mental midget. Fair or not, he hasn't seen anything close to what he's going to get this year from the fans and media - especially now that it seems like he pretty much lied about everything earlier this week. I'd probably drop him to about 7 or 8 just to avoid the headache.

Ahead of him: Hanley, Reyes, Pujols, Wright, Sizemore, Cabrera

Eephus - not sure why he would be downgraded from where people would normally have him - somewhere between 1.01 and 1.05 depending.

He is NOT facing suspension. The ony reason for anyone to not think he will put up ARod type numbers are if you think the constant BS and NY media pressure will get to him this year.

Smackdown - no reason not to take him if you like him better than Hanley (presumably steals down but RBI up hitting 3rd), or Pujols.

MaddHatter - what categories does your league use? I haven't seen anyone's cheatsheets that get him below the 5th pick

Now that A-Rod has been linked to Presinal as recently as 2007, there isn't much doubt in my opinion that he has continued to take stuff.

Don't know how much this would affect his upgrade/downgrade status for this season. If he's still on something, I'd say it's a safe bet that he won't be dropping off anytime soon.

Very odd (though not surprising considering A-Rod's very public missteps) that he'd associate so closely with such a visible figure in the steroids issue. He can't find someone other than Presinal to get his stuff from? Having his cousin as a go-between isn't exactly distancing himself much.

I find myself wondering who has been using up to now and may go off the junk for fear of getting caught. I guess until there's mandatory testing probably not too many. Should we expect some numbers to drop a bit this season?

I am going to move him down a couple of notches. He is very sensitive and doesn't take critism very well. He will still have good numbers, but I am a little worried about his psyche. I would still rank him top 5. I would take H. Ramirez and Pujols ahead of him for sure, maybe Wright or Reyes. I still haven't decided what I am doing if I get a pick that high.
