1 DETROIT LIONS: MATTHEW STAFFORD, QB, GEORGIA

Scouting Report

After another gut-wrenching season the Lions are entering yet another rebuilding era. On the bright side at least there will be real change this time around, with everyone from Matt Millen to Rod Marinelli and everyone in between likely to be handed their walking papers. Detroit has a plethora of needs, which is why they have the #1 overall pick, but quarterback has to take precedence over everything else. I have always maintained that the "Golden Rule of the NFL Draft" is unless you already have a franchise quarterback you don't pass on one. The Lions don't have anything even closely resembling a franchise signal caller. Matthew Stafford truly is the total package with all the physical tools you look for, including one of the strongest arms in all of football, and top-notch intangibles to boot. There are no sure things in the NFL Draft, especially when it comes to quarterbacks, but Stafford is potentially the type of guy you can build a team around. Stafford gets the nod over Sam Bradford here in large part due to his experience running a pro-style offense. The other main option for Detroit would be a left tackle and Andre Smith is awfully tempting but at the end of the day it's quarterbacks that separate the good teams from the bad teams.

2 ST. LOUIS RAMS: ANDRE SMITH, OT, ALABAMA

Scouting Report

It's common knowledge that the Rams have been aching to address their offensive line for a while now and unlike last year, when Jake Long was selected one pick ahead of them, they should have no trouble landing a top blocker in the 2009 NFL Draft. Orlando Pace has been one of the best in the business for more than a decade but he is now in his mid-30's and injuries have really begun to take their toll. On the other side former first round pick Alex Barron continues to disappoint and the Rams would like nothing more than to bring in a capable replacement. Andre Smith is a couple inches shorter than most elite left tackle prospects and he has had a tendency to get a little heavy at times but there is no denying his talent. A dominating run blocker who is also light on his feet and athletic enough to hold his own against top sack artists in pass protection, Smith should be one of the first few players off the board next April and he will be in the mix for the #1 overall pick. If Smith is gone the Rams could turn their attention to either Eugene Monroe or Jason Smith. The Rams could also use a true #1 cornerback so Malcolm Jenkins might be a possibility and don't rule out Aaron Curry, who could man the strongside or the middle in St. Louis.

3 KANSAS CITY CHIEFS: AARON CURRY, OLB, WAKE FOREST

Scouting Report

Up until about two months ago everyone had this pegged as a quarterback spot but it looks like Tyler Thigpen may have played well enough down the stretch to make the Chiefs feel comfortable moving forward with him as their starting signal caller. Personally, I don't know that Thigpen has done enough to justify passing on a top quarterback prospect but I'm not the one making that decision. Selecting Aaron Curry would not be anywhere near as flashy as a guy like Sam Bradford but that doesn't mean it's the wrong decision. In fact, Curry doesn't get nearly enough credit for being the top pro prospect that he is. The #1 senior in the country and a legit Top 5 talent, Curry can basically do it all. A great all-around linebacker who can stuff the run, drop into coverage and rush the passer, Curry is also versatile enough to play outside or inside in either a 4-3 or a 3-4 defensive scheme. The guy is really the total package. With the Chiefs Curry could fit in on the strongside or in the middle and he would give their front seven the boost they need. Quarterback will obviously still be an option here as well and they would also like an upgrade over Damion McIntosh at right tackle so Andre Smith and Eugene Monroe are possibilities too. Also keep an eye on Malcolm Jenkins because outside of Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr they don't have much to get excited about at cornerback.

4 CINCINNATI BENGALS: CHRIS WELLS, RB, OHIO ST.

Scouting Report

It's easy to single out Carson Palmer's absence as the reason behind the Bengals once high-powered offense's drastic decline and that is certainly a factor but the truth is but they were having issues long before their star signal caller got hurt. One of the main culprits has been the lack of a steady running game and after finishing in the Top 10 in 2006 the Bengals now rank near the bottom of the league in rushing. You can't blame them for sending Rudi Johnson packing because he had seen better days but they made a big mistake in trying to replace him with Chris Perry, who has proven to be a certifiable bust this year. What about the great Cedric Benson comeback you ask? Well, that was more media hype than anything else. In reality Benson has rushed for less than 500 yards and averaged about 3.0 yards per carry. Needless to say the Bengals need an upgrade at running back and while taking one this early in the draft is risky, especially due to the financial considerations, Chris "Beanie" Wells is the best fit for Cincy. Durability has been an issue for 6-1, 237 pound Wells but that is the only big knock on him and his grade could ultimately be on par with Darren McFadden's from a year ago. A top offensive lineman will also get some consideration but the Bengals already have a lot invested in their guys up front and it's not like they are devoid of talent with Levi Jones, Stacy Andrews, Andrew Whitworth and promising youngster Anthony Collins. Running back is simply a more pressing concern and it also wouldn't hurt to bring in a local Ohio product like Wells to help generate some positive P.R. for a franchise that's in desperate need of it.

5 SEATTLE SEAHAWKS: MICHAEL CRABTREE, WR, TEXAS TECH

Scouting Report

The wheels really fell off in Seattle and injuries had a lot to do with it but they also let themselves get old at some key positions, especially on offense. Wide receiver has been a huge problem area for the Seahawks and that might be the direction they look to go with this pick. Deion Branch has not lived up to expectations, Bobby Engram is going to be a 36-year-old free agent, Nate Burleson and Koren Robinson aren't keeping defenses up at night and to make matters worse the young guys they have brought in (Courtney Taylor, Ben Obomanu and Jordan Kent) just haven't panned out. The bottom line is that when it comes to wideouts the Seahawks have quantity, but what they lack is quality. Michael Crabtree is just a redshirt sophomore but he is already a two-time winner of the Biletnikoff Award and will go down as one of the greatest receivers in college football history. The big question mark with Crabtree is speed and some wonder whether he will be able to separate from pro corners but you can't help but be impressed with his size, hands, ball skills, body control and ability to run after the catch. Seattle could also be in the market for an offensive lineman here since Walter Jones is getting up there in years and if Leroy Hill leaves as a free agent Aaron Curry would be an ideal replacement on the strongside. As a darkhorse keep an eye on Beanie Wells, who would be a big upgrade over the middling 3-headed monster of Julius Jones / Maurice Morris / T.J. Duckett.

6 OAKLAND RAIDERS: EUGENE MONROE, OT, VIRGINIA

Scouting Report

The Raiders are a terrible team with a ton of needs yet one glaring weakness somehow manages to stand head and shoulders above the rest. That really says something about how bad Oakland's offensive tackles are. That is why even though they have plenty of holes to address the Raiders are almost forced to take a blocker with this selection. To say Kwame Harris has been a free agent disappointment would be an understatement and how Cornell Green has managed to hold onto a starting job for two years defies explanation. The Raiders already have two high draft picks and a ridiculous amount of money invested in JaMarcus Russell and Darren McFadden so it only makes sense to bring in someone to block for them. Eugene Monroe is the consensus top senior offensive tackle in what is considered to be a very strong class and he will try to follow in the footsteps of former Cavaliers D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Branden Albert. Plugging Monroe in at left tackle and moving Harris to the right side would give the Raiders line a major boost and at least give their offense a fighting chance. The other main consideration here will most likely be a wide receiver and Michael Crabtree could tempt Al Davis but he needs to suppress the urge to make a splash and do the right thing. There is no question that Russell, McFadden and Crabtree would form one of the most exciting sets of triplets in the league but all that talent would be essentially rendered useless with an offensive line like they have now.

7 JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS: JASON SMITH, OT, BAYLOR

Scouting Report

The 2008 season was a nightmare for Jacksonville and a collapse like that stems from more than one problem but it's pretty obvious that injuries along the offensive line took their toll. The Jaguars still have some talent up front but they probably learned their lesson and realize it's time to bring in some help in the blocking department. Khalif Barnes has been a serviceable left tackle for the Jags but he is really the only stalwart along that offensive line. Jason Smith wouldn't be an obvious fit and they would likely have to re-shuffle their line to get the five best players on the field but that is a good problem to have. A former tight end who only moved to the offensive line a few years ago, Smith enjoyed a dramatic rise up draft boards in 2008 and he is now in contention to be the first senior offensive tackle off the board. A great athlete who is very light on his feet, Smith's calling card is his pass blocking but he has a lot of upside and his best football is still ahead of him. Despite investing a lot of resources in wideouts over the years Jacksonville could still use a playmaker in the passing game and Jeremy Maclin would be a very intriguing possibility. Also keep in mind that Jack Del Rio is a Southern Cal alum and fellow Trojan Rey Maualuga could be a nice replacement for Mike Peterson at middle linebacker once he's inevitably sent packing.

8 CLEVELAND BROWNS: MALCOLM JENKINS, CB, OHIO ST.

Scouting Report

After a breakout season in 2007 the Browns were expected to be contenders this year but instead they were arguably the most disappointing team in the league. The good news is they really aren't as bad as their record might otherwise suggest and they do still have a considerable amount of talent. In my opinion cornerback is far and away the Browns most glaring need and outside of Eric Wright they probably don't have another starting-caliber cover guy on the roster. Sorry Brandon McDonald. With that being the case Cleveland would have to be overjoyed to find Malcolm Jenkins still on the board here. Not only is Jenkins clearly the top cornerback in this draft and an excellent player but he is also a local prospect, having played his college ball just down the road in Columbus. Jenkins may not be the fastest corner out there but he has great size, a lot of experience, top-notch intangibles and he would be a perfect fit for the Browns. The other option for Cleveland here would probably be a pass rushing outside linebacker, although they are very high on Alex Hall as Willie McGinest's eventual successor. If they did want to go in that direction Brian Orakpo would make the most sense. A couple of other things to watch out for are if Sean Jones leaves as a free agent they could look to replace him with Taylor Mays and if Kellen Winslow's sent packing they may be in the market for a tight end.

9 SAN FRANCISCO 49'ERS: SAM BRADFORD, QB, OKLAHOMA

Scouting Report

It may be difficult for the Niners to take another quarterback in the Top 10 after getting burnt with Alex Smith but they can't let that affect their thinking. If by some chance Sam Bradford falls into their lap they need to take him. It's as simple as that. The Niners have plenty of needs and they could legitimately go in a half dozen different directions with this pick but as I always say the "Golden Rule of the NFL Draft" is that unless you already have a franchise quarterback you don't pass on one. Sure Shaun Hill has done a decent job for the Niners at times but is he really the type who can lead a team to the Super Bowl? Probably not. Bradford is just a redshirt sophomore but he has been nothing short of prolific for the Sooners the past two years and if he opts to enter the '09 Draft he could be a Top 10 pick. Maybe even Top 5. There is plenty to like about Bradford, most notably his accuracy, but it's important to keep in mind that he is far from a sure-thing. When you factor in his relative lack of experience and questions about how he will adapt to a pro style offense it's not a stretch to suggest that Bradford could be a boom or bust type of prospect. The 49'ers could also be in the market for an offensive tackle, a cornerback or a pass rusher in round one but since Bradford is available everything else can wait.

10 GREEN BAY PACKERS: BRIAN ORAKPO, DE, TEXAS

Scouting Report

After winning 13 games a year ago big things were expected of the Packers in 2008 and even though they failed to take that next step the future still looks bright. Regardless of what you might think of Ted Thompson and the way he handled the Brett Favre situation you can't help but be impressed with his Draft Day track record and he has assembled a nice core of young talent on both sides of the ball. However, one area that is of particular concern is the defensive line and Green Bay really struggled to generate a pass rush, ranking near the bottom of the league in sacks. Aaron Kampman doesn't get nearly enough credit for being one of the best defensive ends in the business but former defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins is more of a run stuffer and after releasing Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila they could use a top pass rusher. Brian Orakpo, a.k.a. “O-Sack-Po”, had an amazing senior season for the Longhorns and he won both the Lombardi Award as the nation's best lineman and the Nagurski Trophy, which is given to the nation's top defensive player. In addition to that outstanding on-field performance Orakpo also figures to test extremely well in pre-draft workouts when he is given an opportunity to show off his amazing blend of athleticism, speed and strength. The Packers could also use some help at offensive tackle but the chance to add the best defensive end in the draft is too good to pass up.

11 SAN DIEGO CHARGERS: REY MAUALUGA, ILB, USC

Scouting Report

Nobody has done a better job of working the draft process in recent years than the San Diego Chargers. In fact, 21 of their 23 starters are home-grown! There aren’t many holes in the Chargers starting lineup but they have had some issues at middle linebacker and Rey Maualuga would be a perfect fit for their 3-4 defense. A big inside ‘backer with a physical presence and a nasty demeanor, Maualuga can be a bit inconsistent and will miss some tackles but he still has a lot of upside and when everything is clicking the guy can be flat-out dominant. Penn St. is known as “Linebacker U” but USC could give them a run for that title, with Maualuga joining past Trojan greats such as Junior Seau, Chris Claiborne, Lofa Tatupu and Keith Rivers. The Chargers also have some question marks on the right side of their offensive line with Mike Goff and Jeromey Clary so that could be a possibility here as well. Don’t rule out a defensive lineman like Tyson Jackson or B.J. Raji either because Igor Olshansky is expected to leave as a free agent this offseason and there is not much depth to speak of at either end or nose tackle. Based on what's available to them here Maualuga seems like the best fit for San Diego in terms of both talent and need and he would be a major upgrade over what they currently have at the position.

12 HOUSTON TEXANS: TAYLOR MAYS, S, USC

Scouting Report

The Texans have been around for seven years but, with all due respect to the C.C. Brown's and Will Demps' of the world, they have never had a great safety. That would change with this pick. Just a junior, Taylor Mays is already somewhat of a legend in draftnik circles and if his workout numbers are anything close to what has been rumored he could be long gone by this point on Draft Day. The phrase "Hits Like a Linebacker, Runs Like a Cornerback" was made to describe guys like Mays, who checks in at 6-3 and 230 pounds and has reportedly run a 4.3 forty. Granted USC has a fast track and is known for inflating their players times but even if Mays runs a 4.45 it will still be very impressive at that size. If Mays is gone or if they want to go in another direction defensive end will also be a strong possibility. Mario Williams is one of the leagues elite pass rushers but Houston is not happy with Anthony Weaver on the other side and there should be a lot of good defensive ends still on the board here. Don't rule out a linebacker either. However, guys like Mays just don't come around very often and Houston may have a hard time passing up the chance to add such a freakish athlete and potential impact player to their secondary.

13 BUFFALO BILLS: JERMAINE GRESHAM, TE, OKLAHOMA

Scouting Report

After getting off to a great start in 2008 the Bills regressed as the season wore on and a lot of the blame can be placed on their offenses inability to score points. With a young quarterback that is to be expected to a degree but they also need to add some more weapons and firepower. One area where they are in particular need of an upgrade is tight end and Jermaine Gresham is the best this class has to offer. A fantastic athlete with a great blend of size (6-6, 261) and speed, Gresham is like a wide receiver in a tight end's body and a real weapon in the passing game. He's not just a pass catcher though and he has some potential as a blocker as well. Just to give you an idea of what kind of threat Gresham is, he actually led the Sooners in touchdowns catches in 2008 and even broke one for 73 yards. You won't see many tight ends do that! Some might say the Bills prefer a tight end who is more of a blocker than a receiver, in which case Brandon Pettigrew might be a better fit, but I would argue they have that now with Robert Royal and it isn't working out very well. Buffalo could also use an upgrade at safety alongside Donte Whitner and don't rule out a defensive end either because Chris Kelsay & Ryan Denney aren't getting the job done.

14 CHICAGO BEARS: JEREMY MACLIN, WR, MISSOURI

Scouting Report

There is no question that Devin Hester has made strides as a wide receiver but he is the only real weapon the Bears have at wideout and they still need some more playmakers on offense. Jeremy Maclin is actually similar to Hester in many ways and they are both the types of all-around threats that opponents must account for as receivers, runners and return men. The explosive Maclin was the nation's leader in all-purpose yardage and not only would he give the Chicago offense a major shot in the arm but he could also share the return workload with Hester and help keep him fresh. Maclin is an even better prospect than former #9 overall pick Ted Ginn, Jr. was coming out of college and there really isn't as much separating him and Michael Crabtree as some might think. Despite using their top pick last year on Chris Williams the Bears could still use some more help along the offensive line and with age and injuries beginning to take their toll it wouldn't hurt to add some reinforcements in the secondary either. With that said it's pretty clear that above all else Chicago needs more guys who can put the ball in the endzone. If they are lucky enough to get a crack at a Top 10 talent like Maclin the Bears should pull the trigger.

15 NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS: VONTAE DAVIS, CB, ILLINOIS

Scouting Report

For the most part New England has been able to get by without investing major resources in their cornerbacks but that might have to change. The Pats selected Tyrone Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite early in last year's draft but they failed to impress as rookies and the team wound up relying on journeymen like Deltha O'Neal and Lewis Sanders. When it comes to physical tools there isn't another cornerback in this draft who can compete with Vontae Davis, including Malcolm Jenkins. That is why he could very easily come off the board in the Top 10 overall. On the other hand Davis also has a reputation for being difficult and undisciplined, which is why he could fall a bit. However, if anybody can help Davis maximize his potential it's Bill Belichick and this would be a perfect situation for both the player and the team. If Davis isn't available when it's New England's turn to pick watch out for Alphonso Smith later on in round one because he has a little Asante Samuel in him. With Rodney Harrison on the verge of retirement the Patriots could also use a safety and either Taylor Mays or William Moore would be good fits alongside Brandon Meriweather. Offensive line or linebacker could get some consideration here as well but there is no question that the Pats greatest need is in the secondary and Davis is a nice value here.

16 PHILADELPHIA EAGLES: MICHAEL OHER, OT, OLE MISS

Scouting Report

Some may be surprised to see Michael Oher this low but of all the top prospects he has the best chance to slide a bit on Draft Day. Oher is probably the most physically gifted offensive lineman in this draft but there are some significant question marks when it comes to his intangibles that could give teams pause. Also, while Oher is an outstanding pass protector his effort in the run game comes and goes, although he has flashed the ability to stand out in that area at times as well. Oher could ultimately end up in the Top 5-10 overall but there is also a chance he could fall to the end of round one. If Oher did begin to drop the Eagles would be more than happy to stop his slide because they could certainly use a talented young offensive tackle. Both Tra Thomas and Jon Runyan are in their mid-30's and nearing the end of the line and since Winston Justice hasn't developed as expected the Eagles really don't have a successor in place for either of them. Philly could also be in the market for a safety here and with L.J. Smith set to hit the open market they could opt to replace him with a guy like Jermaine Gresham rather than use the franchise tag again. Ultimately Oher is just too good to pass up and the Iggles would be very fortunate if he fell into their lap

17 WASHINGTON REDSKINS: MICHAEL JOHNSON, DE, GEORGIA TECH

Scouting Report

On the face it would appear that the Redskins are set at defensive end but looks can be deceiving. In reality the Redskins rank near the bottom of the league in sacks and their big offseason acquisition, 34-year-old Jason Taylor, has been a major disappointment. To top it all off the Skins don’t have any depth to speak of either. Michael Johnson figures to be one of the most polarizing prospects in this draft. A freakish athlete with great size (6-7, 260) and excellent speed (4.65), Johnson has all the tools to be an elite sack artist. However, he often disappears for long stretches, is a liability against the run and he may be nothing more than a situation pass rusher at the next level. Johnson is a classic boom or bust type of prospect but at this point in round one somebody will likely be willing to take a chance on his tantalizing upside and you know Dan Snyder has never been afraid to take a risk. This is a good situation for Johnson because he could be worked in slowly before eventually replacing Taylor in a year or two. The Redskins could also use an upgrade at right tackle, where Jon Jansen is well past his prime and Stephon Heyer has struggled, and they could probably do better than Kedric Gholston and Anthony Montgomery at defensive tackle too. This really is one of the toughest picks to predict.

18 NEW ORLEANS SAINTS: JAMES LAURINAITIS, ILB, OHIO ST.

Scouting Report

Last offseason the Saints traded for Jonathan Vilma, signed Randall Gay and Bobby McCray as free agents and used their first three draft picks on Sedrick Ellis, Tracy Porter and DeMario Pressley yet the defense continued to be their Achilles Heel in 2008. They deserve an “A” for effort but it looks like it’ll be back to the drawing board for New Orleans as they search for the right mix of players to finally turn that defense around. It looks like the Saints have some talent along the defensive line and in the secondary but they could still use some help at linebacker, especially since Jonathan Vilma is set to become a free agent. James Laurinaitis could have been a Top 10 pick in last year’s draft but he opted to return to Columbus for his senior season and his stock has taken a hit. Laurinaitis may not have a lot of upside but he is a very good all-around player with excellent intangibles and he could play the middle or the weakside in the Saints defense. Legend has it New Orleans was poised to select A.J. Hawk with the #2 overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft before Reggie Bush fell into their lap so this might be there chance to get a very similar type of player. Despite investing a bunch of free agent dollars and draft picks on corners in recent years the Saints could still use more help there, especially since Mike McKenzie is injured again.

19 MIAMI DOLPHINS: BRIAN CUSHING, OLB, USC

Scouting Report

No matter where he goes Bill Parcells wins and the way he has turned this Dolphins franchise around so quickly might be one of his crowning achievements. There is still work to be done though and Miami has plenty of needs they could address with this pick. When doing mock drafts it’s important to look at history and trends and Parcells has used first round picks on impact linebackers everywhere he has been. Whether it was Carl Banks with the Giants, Willie McGinest in New England, James Farrior with the Jets or DeMarcus Ware with the Cowboys. That is what we call a tendency. Brian Cushing has battled the injury bug for most of his career but when he is healthy the results have been impressive. A bit of a linebacker / defensive end hybrid, Cushing would be a perfect fit in the Dolphins 3-4 defensive scheme and he could play outside or inside for them. In fact, in many ways he is similar to Bobby Carpenter, who Parcells liked enough to use a mid-first round pick on during his time with Dallas. The Dolphins could also use a top cornerback and outside of Ted Ginn they really don’t have anything to get excited about at wide receiver either. Keep a close eye on B.J. Raji too because he would be an ideal fit as their long-term successor to the aging and undersized Jason Ferguson at nose tackle.

20 ATLANTA FALCONS: B.J. RAJI, DT, BOSTON COLLEGE

Scouting Report

There is absolutely no question that the Falcons did the right thing when they passed on Glenn Dorsey in favor of Matt Ryan last year but they still haven’t address that glaring need at defensive tackle. At 6-1 and 323 pounds some assume that B.J. Raji is just a big, run-stuffing 3-4 nose tackle but he has also shown the ability to penetrate and make plays in the backfield, which is evidenced by his career totals of 29.5 TFL and 11.5 Sacks. After sitting out the 2007 season to get his grades in order Raji more than made up for lost time as a senior, coming through with a dominating final campaign for the Eagles. Not only did Raji solidify himself as a first round pick but he could even break into the top half of round one. The Falcons have had some success with Grady Jackson, another big space eater, but he is 36-years-old so Raji would be a nice replacement alongside Jonathan Babineaux. Atlanta is also in desperate need of an upgrade at tight end so either Jermaine Gresham or Brandon Pettigrew would be tempting and with Lawyer Milloy likely to be moving on safety is a concern as well. However, the Falcons have made no secret of their burning desire to bring in a stud defensive tackle so if Raji is still available he would be a nice choice.

21 DENVER BRONCOS: WILLIAM MOORE, S, MISSOURI

Scouting Report

There is no way to put a silver lining on it, the Broncos defense was absolutely terrible once again in 2008. In fact, they rank near the bottom of the league in both run and pass defense. A unit that bad obviously has a bunch of holes but safety stands out above the rest, which really says something about the state of that position. Coming into his senior year William Moore was considered to be a potential Top 10 overall pick but he battled some injuries and didn’t get as many opportunities to make an impact in coverage so his stock has dropped a bit. Still, the Broncos would be very fortunate to get a crack at Moore here and he would be a huge upgrade over Marquand Manuel at strong safety. Don’t completely rule out a running back here either. Sure they were devastated by injuries and that contributed to their struggles running the ball but even when everyone is healthy the Broncos still don’t have a sure-fire starter. Historically they have been able to find running backs later in the draft but Denver hasn't had an impact talent at the position since Clinton Portis. Ultimately the defense has to take precedence though and while adding Moore won't solve all of their problems it would definitely be a big step in the right direction.

22 NEW YORK JETS: TYSON JACKSON, DE, L.S.U.

Scouting Report

No team did a better job of plugging holes last offseason than the Jets and as a result they don’t necessarily have a lot of glaring needs. Defensive end might not be their most pressing concern but Tyson Jackson is a great value and such a perfect fit for their scheme that it seems like a match made in NFL Draft Heaven. At 6-5 and 290 pounds Jackson is an impressive physical specimen and underrated athlete who really stands out from the other top players at his position in this draft. Jackson isn’t a great pass rusher but he is versatile, does a terrific job against the run and is a better prospect than Marcus Spears was coming out of L.S.U. and he was the 20th overall pick back in 2005. In many ways the Jets have used the Patriots franchise as a blueprint for building this team and Jackson could be their version of Ty Warren. New York also has some issues in the secondary, specifically at the safety spot next to Kerry Rhodes where Abram Elam and Eric Smith are better suited for backup duty. William Moore would be a huge upgrade or they could even take a cornerback and kick Dwight Lowery inside. Thomas Jones recently turned 30, an age when a lot of running backs tend to start wearing down, so while it might be a bit of a luxury pick the Jets could also take a look at Knowshon Moreno or LeSean McCoy.

23 ARIZONA CARDINALS: KNOWSHON MORENO, RB, GEORGIA

Scouting Report

There aren’t many teams with a more potent passing game than Arizona but their ground attack leaves something to be desired. Edgerrin James already has one foot out the door and while at one point it looked like Tim Hightower might be the long-term solution at running back his lackluster performance down the stretch indicates he is probably best suited for the short-yardage / goalline role. Knowshon Moreno is only a redshirt sophomore but he has had two amazing seasons for the Dawgs and if he opts to enter the draft he will most likely be a first round pick. In some ways Moreno is similar to Cadillac Williams in that he doesn’t have elite size or speed but he makes up for it with outstanding instincts and vision. Moreno could very well be gone by this point and if that is the case Arizona could turn their attention to LeSean McCoy. The Cardinals could also still use some help along the offensive line. Mike Gandy is solid but they could do a whole lot better at left tackle and guys like Max Unger or Alex Mack would be major upgrades over Lyle Sendlein at center. Don’t rule out a pass rushing outside linebacker for their 3-4 defense either because even though they have a bunch of pretty solid players like Bertrand Berry, Travis LaBoy, Chike Okeafor and Clark Haggans they still lack a genuine difference maker.

24 DETROIT LIONS (f/DAL): EVERETTE BROWN, DE, FLORIDA ST.

Scouting Report

The Lions have been searching for a top defensive end for years now but they still don’t have a pass rusher who strikes fear into the hearts of opposing blockers. Sure Dewayne White is solid but he has never had more than 6.5 sacks in a season during his NFL career and is really more of a #2 type. Everette Brown doesn’t have the ideal bulk you look for at just 252 pounds but he is an amazing athlete with 4.6 speed who knows how to get after the quarterback and has a knack for making impact plays behind the line of scrimmage. Brown is just a junior and has only been a full-time starter for the Noles for about a year and a half but he has still managed to rack up an amazing 45.5 tackles for a loss and 22.0 sacks on his career, including 20.5 and 12.5 in 2008 alone. Some feel Brown’s best fit at the next level will be as a 3-4 outside linebacker but the Lions need a stud pass rusher and Brown can do that with the best of them. Keep an eye on Greg Hardy too because he's actually a better fit for a 4-3. Detroit also needs some help on their offensive line but unless some underclassmen come out that weren’t expected to they would probably be better off waiting until the top of round two to select someone like Jamon Meredith. Brandon Pettigrew would represent a major upgrade at tight end and he could be an interesting option here too.

25 MINNESOTA VIKINGS: MAX UNGER, C, OREGON

Scouting Report

Quarterback is probably the Vikings #1 need but it’s not realistic to think they will land a top signal caller this late in round one. Josh Freeman could be an interesting option if he opts to come out early though... Assuming they can’t get a quarterback here the Vikings would likely turn their attention to the offensive line, where they have some serious issues at right tackle. Ryan Cook’s transition from college center to NFL offensive tackle has not worked out like they had hoped and he was eventually benched in favor of journeyman Artis Hicks. Also, while Bryant McKinnie is entrenched at left tackle he is one more off-the-field incident away from a lengthy suspension, which would really leave Minnesota up a creek because there isn’t much depth to speak of. Max Unger certainly wouldn’t be a sexy pick but his ability to play all five positions along the offensive line has earned him the nickname "Mr. Versatility" and made him a legit first round possibility. Not only could Unger step in as the starter at right tackle while providing insurance for McKinnie on the left side but he could even be a potential replacement for pending free agent Matt Birk at center. Cornerback could be possibility here too because Charles Gordon is coming back from a nasty ankle injury and the Vikes don't have a whole lot of quality depth.

26 TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS: DARRIUS HEYWARD-BEY, WR, MARYLAND

Scouting Report

Antonio Bryant has been a pleasant surprise for the Bucs but there isn’t much else to get excited about at the wide receiver position in Tampa. Joey Galloway is 37-years-old and just had one of the worst seasons of his pro career, Michael Clayton is going to be a free agent, Maurice Stovall looks like a bust, and while they did just use a second round pick on Dexter Jackson he made little or no impact as a rookie and really doesn’t profile as a starter in the NFL. Darrius Heyward-Bey was grossly underutilized by the Terps but even though he is still raw and his resume isn’t as impressive as some of the other top wideout prospects in this draft he may have the best set of physical tools and the most long-term upside. “DHB” may require a couple years of development but that patience could be handsomely rewarded. The Buccaneers could also use an infusion of talent at defensive tackle, where Chris Hovan and Jovan Haye are okay but certainly won’t be mistaken for Warren Sapp or Booger McFarland anytime soon. Peria Jerry would be a perfect fit for their defensive scheme and figures to be chosen in this general area. Don’t rule out a left tackle either because while Donald Penn has held his own there is certainly room for an upgrade and the Bucs have shown a willingness to use premium draft picks on offensive lineman in recent years.

27 INDIANAPOLIS COLTS: PERIA JERRY, DT, OLE MISS

Scouting Report

The unexpected retirement of Quinn Pitcock and release of Ed Johnson left a gaping hole in the Colts defensive tackle rotation, which wasn’t exactly loaded with impact performers to begin with. Needless to say that is without question their most glaring weakness and it might occupy the #1 and #2 spots on their list of needs. Sure Indy has been able to get by with guys like Keyunta Dawson, Eric Foster and Darrell Reid but for Tony Dungy’s scheme to really click on all cylinders they need a penetrating difference maker in the middle. Despite being hindered by an injury early in the year Peria Jerry still managed to rack up 17.0 tackles for a loss and 6.0 sacks for the Rebels as a senior. A very good athlete with great strength and a terrific motor, Jerry is a legit first round talent but for some reason he doesn’t get a lot of attention and continues to be underrated. I have a feeling that will change as the draft process moves forward but for the time being he would be a good value pick for the Colts late in round one and a perfect fit for their defensive scheme. If Kelvin Hayden bolts as a free agent Indy could be in the market for a cornerback to replace him and they will eventually need another wideout since Marvin Harrison nearing the end of his career. Other than that the Colts are basically in good shape on both sides of the ball.

28 BALTIMORE RAVENS: ALPHONSO SMITH, CB, WAKE FOREST

Scouting Report

In the months leading up to last year’s draft most mock drafts had the Ravens taking a cornerback in round one. They ultimately went in different direction with that top pick (although they did trade for Fabian Washington) but here we are a year later and they still need a top cover guy. Chris McAlister has been plagued by injuries and is a strong candidate to be released as a cap casualty while Samari Rolle is 32-years-old and hasn’t exactly been the picture of health in recent years either. As for the depth, it is basically nonexistent. If Alphonso Smith were a couple inches taller he would most likely be long gone by this point but he is very fast, super tough and plays bigger than his 5-9, 190 pound frame would suggest. Smith is also a true playmaker in the secondary, with the hands and ball skills to make quarterbacks pay for their mistakes. Smith is clearly the #2 senior cornerback in this draft and he will be a nice pick for someone late in round one. The Ravens might also be in the market for a wide receiver since Derrick Mason is getting up there in years and Demetrius Williams hasn’t developed as they had hoped. Keep a close eye on the linebacker situation in Baltimore too because Ray Lewis, Bart Scott and Terrell Suggs are set to become unrestricted free agents and odds are at least one of them will be moving on.

29 PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (f/CAR): BRANDON PETTIGREW, TE, OKLA. ST.

Scouting Report

Rather than risk losing L.J. Smith when he became a free agent last offseason the Eagles opted to slap the franchise tag on him, which carried a $4.5 million price tag. Smith was being paid like one of the top tight ends in the league in 2008 but he actually had arguably the worst season of his career and the Eagles probably won’t place such a high priority on re-signing him this time around. If Smith does leave Philly will need to go out and find a replacement because in-house options Brent Celek and Matt Schobel aren’t starting material. Brandon Pettigrew is undeniably the top senior tight end prospect in this draft and he could even come off the board a lot earlier than this. However, while Pettigrew should be admired for his all-around game and ability to contribute as both a blocker and pass catcher his rather ordinary 4.8 speed could put a ceiling on how high he is drafted next April. In other words he is probably more Daniel Graham than Kellen Winslow or Vernon Davis. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but he just isn’t the type of dynamic playmaker at the position that teams are willing to invest a really early pick on. Philadelphia could also be in the market for a strong safety to replace Quintin Mikell and don’t rule out a running back as insurance for the injury-prone Brian “Mr. Questionable” Westbrook.

30 PITTSBURGH STEELERS: DUKE ROBINSON, OG, OKLAHOMA

Scouting Report

What happened to the Steelers offensive line? If nothing else Pittsburgh could always count on a dominating group of blockers up front but in 2008 they gave up a ton of sacks and ranked in the bottom third of the league in rushing. Last offseason the Steelers lost All-Pro Alan Faneca in free agency and with Marvel Smith, Max Starks and Chris Kemoeatu all due to hit the open market this year more drastic changes could be on the horizon. That’s why it would be hard to fault them for simply taking the best offensive lineman on the board. At 6-5 and 335 pounds Duke Robinson is a massive roadgrader from a great program and while it’s rare to see a true guard come off the board in round one he has the talent to be an exception. The Steelers might also be on the lookout for some help in the secondary, especially if cornerback Bryant McFadden leaves as a free agent. However, everything starts up front for the Steelers and they need to improve that offensive line if they hope to keep Ben Roethlisberger healthy and jumpstart the run game. In the last ten years Pittsburgh has selected two offensive lineman in the first round of the draft and they both happened to be guards. Perhaps it is time to go back to that well one more time.

31 NEW YORK GIANTS: CLINT SINTIM, OLB, VIRGINIA

Scouting Report

When the Giants selected Mathias Kiwanuka in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft it was with the intention of making him a strongside linebacker but when Michael Strahan retired and Osi Umenyiora went down with an injury he was moved back to defensive end. Well, “Kiwi” has performed so well and looked so comfortable at his natural position that they may have a hard time moving him back. If that is indeed the case the G-Men will need to find another outside linebacker because at this point in his career Danny Clark is not starting material. New York would be lucky to find Clint Sintim still on the board here because he is exactly the type of linebacker that they look for. Not only does Sintim look like a prototypical SAM who plays both the run and the pass effectively but he has also proven to be an outstanding pass rusher and blitzer. In fact, for his career the 6-3, 254 pound Sintim has more tackles for a loss and the same number of sacks as Georgia Tech's Michael Johnson, who many feel is one of the top sack artists in this draft! With Plaxico Burress’ future with the team in serious jeopardy and Amani Toomer nearing the end of his career the Giants might have to go out and find themselves another tall, physical wide receiver.

32 TENNESSEE TITANS: PERCY HARVIN, WR, FLORIDA

Scouting Report

It’s pretty clear that the Titans are going to rely on their running game and defense to win games for the foreseeable future but at some point they need to bring in some more weapons in the passing game. Just how bad have things gotten in Tennessee? Well, two of their top three leading receivers are a tight end and a running back! The reason things have gotten to this point is because instead of using a premium draft pick to solve the problem once and for all the Titans continue to take the nickel and dime approach, using a bunch of third and fourth round picks on guys who simply don’t have the ability to be impact players. That is why their leading receiver is a 250 pound H-Back. Percy Harvin in arguably the most explosive, dynamic playmaker in this draft and if he didn’t have so much trouble staying healthy he would probably come off the board much, much earlier. Think of him as a bigger, more fragile Ted Ginn. Right now the Titans don’t have a wideout that defenses must respect and gameplan for but that would all change with the addition of Harvin. If Albert Haynesworth leaves as a free agent defensive tackle will become a huge problem area for the Titans and they could also use another stud pass rusher outside.

Kind of an odd time to post this. That mock was last updated Dec 15th, before the draft order was even set for many of those teams.

I'd imagine he'll be updating it again after the super bowl, once we have the final draft order. He puts a lot of time into those mocks so he doesn't update them as often as some.

No Chance Oher drops to 16
There's ALWAYS a chance.....it's just not very bloody likely. :goodposting:I may be the only Steeler fan in the world that feels this way, buuut.....I'm about sick and tired of seeing every one of these mocks, even as early as these all are, automatically just drooling and penciling in Duke Robinson for Pittsburgh. Don't get me wrong. Robinson is a good guard, and the Steeler certainly need OL help.....but there is a very real chance that after their season ends that they will have exactly ONE offensive tackle with any actually game experience under contract: Willie Colon. Tony Hills is on the roster, but has not seen a single regular season snap and looked less than stellar in training camp. I think they may have signed Capizzi back when Smith was IR'd, but he's probably only signed until the end of the year as well. Plus, he's Jason Capizzi. Starks, Essex and Smith(who I'm practically convinced will retire) are all free agents, if memory serves. Can't say I care if either Starks or Essex are retained given their level of play. The Steelers have some real work to do at OT, even if one of those 3 guys are kept.I'm not a giant believer that you take an OG in round one unless they are GREAT. The more I watched The Duke this year, the more I wonder if he's not merely "damn good." His hype, which I will grant was pretty f-ing big, isn't something he's lived up to in my eyes. OL is clearly the Steelers' primary need, but to me it screams "offensive tackle" more than "guard." I understand Kemoeatu is also a free agent, Stapleton is playing out of position and Kendall Simmons will be coming back from injury and, basically, blows anyway. I'd still hope they go after an OT if they draft an offensive lineman in round one. There are guards that should be available in rounds 2 and 3 that they can explore. The OTs that project there aren't near as compelling, to me anyway.I understand Robinson likely projects out right around where most of these mocks have the Steelers taking him....it just bugs me that it's just automatic. "Oh, Pittsburgh in round one again? Robinson. Next!*wipes up spit trail*" Never even consider another player, regardless of position, it seems./soapbox

Duke Robinson is not worthy of a Day 1 pick. One of the most over hyped players in the draft. Kinf of reminds me of all the hype Tonu Fonoti was getting when he came out. Like Fonuti, he is huge and if you ask him to drive straight ahead, he is great. But that is not how defenses operate. Lineman slant, and stunt. He cannot handle these moves, and will have an even tougher time in pass protection.
