My main money league is changing from a partial keeper to a redraft league. With 15 teams and 21 roster spots per team, a serious time crunch is inevitable.

How long is realistic to expect teams to make a pick ?

We will have draft assistants that will put up the players names on the draft board. All the owners have to do is announce their pick.

I'm thinking that the entire draft will take just about six and a half hours to complete if we have everyone on a one minute clock.

Is six hours too long of a draft???

do you start 2qb/3rb/4wr/2te? If it's a redraft rather than a dynasty league, i don't see why you need to have such big rosters. If you only start 1 qb, 2 rb, 2wr, 1 flex (or just 3 wr's instead), 1 te,1 k, 1 def that's 9 starting roster spots. 17 roster spots should be able to cover bench, if you cut out 4 rounds @1 minute per pick that'll save you an hour...I agree 6 hours is a bit excessive. The draft might go along smoothly in the early goings, but once the beer starts flowing there may start being more and more bathroom breaks and if need be, smoking breaks. That will only add to your draft time

You're assuming everyone takes 60 seconds. That's obviously not going to happen.Probably averages about 25-35 seconds, which cuts it down into the 3 hour range.

6 hour drafts?!?

we have a 10 team, 53 man rosters auction style...it takes 2 days about 23-24 hours to complete.

what fun would a 3 hour draft be?

6 hrs for that many players to be picked sounds about right, maybe even quick.Yet another argument for auction drafts: "hurry up and pick" never even enters anyone's mind

Yeah, as opposed to a 530-player fun-filled marathon. Gee why stop there? There must be some backup long snappers w/serious potential you're missing.

We allow 2 minutes per pick.

14 teams

20 rounds

Draft usually lasts 5 hours.

I say 5 minutes. Yes, it's way longer than the usual 1 minute, but here are my reasons:

- Draft day is my favorite part of FF, so why try to fly through it?

- If someone knows who they want, they will only take about 30 seconds anyway

- Some people really like to dig into bye weeks, etc before selecting

- 5 mins would give owners a chance to trade picks if they wanted

- If someone takes over 2 mins, the next guy will most likely make his pick fast

And most importantly....

- Draft day is my favorite part of FF, so why try to fly through it?

1 - Because if someone can't figure out who to take in a minute or 2, they're morons and shouldn't be in the league anyway2 - Because taking up to 1-2 mins isn't "flying through it"

3 - Some people DO have lives/family/etc

We used 3:00 min last year... are going to 2:00 min this year.

We were emphasing the need to be prepared. Utilize the "Pre-Draft" tools and be ready.

We allow trades during the draft, but they have to work in advance.

That makes no sense. What if someone drafts a guy someone else wanted and they want to make a trade/etc........Although really I'm amazed any trades happen DURING a draft, it all goes too fast for that to be feasible it seems.

One minute is fine. Most people won't use it, anyway. In the first couple of rounds, people know who they want. It only lags for a few rounds in the middle-- that's where people take their time. At the end people seem to speed it up again.

The draft you mentioned should take about three hours with a one minute clock. The first round will probably take three minutes or so, at the most.

No one said you should fly through it, but giving every owner 5 minutes is giving the unprepared boneheads way too much extra time to figure out their pick. My logic is if you follow each pick as they go along, you should be able to make your pick fairly quickly. I say each owner gets one minute and not a second more.

Don't knock it until you've tried it. My dynasty league has roster spots for 660 players. We also start 26 player each week though (1 QB, 2 RB, 1 QB/RB, 4 WR, 2 TE, 1 WR/TE. 2 DE, 2 DT, 3 LB, 2 CB, 2 Safety, 1 PK, 1 Punter, 1 Team kick return, 1 head coach), so need rosters that big to be able to have backups and prospects. The initial auction lasted forever, but after that it's not bad at all. And it's much more fun having to actually evaluate players in advance and not just be able to go out to waivers and find guys with good value each week.

That was my thought to this post as well. One needs to do their homework BEFORE the draft. Two minutes is plenty. In my league, most don't need the full two minutes. We finish our 10 team 20 round draft in about 3 hours. In response to trades, they don't just have to involve the guy on the clock. Two guys could be negotiating a trade on the side at anytime during the draft.....usually when a player someone really wanted is taken before them. But in general, draft day negotiations need to be fast.....this is where doing your homework prior to draft helps.
